Overview

Since 1964 the Mustang model has been bringing Fender sound and style to the stage and the studio in the hands of trend-setting players ranging from Nirvana to The 1975. Upgraded with performance-oriented features, this new Mustang sports classic style with modern electronics in an ultra-comfortable short-scale form that’s easy to play all night long.

Tonally flexible, the pair of angled single-coil pickups make every note and chord pop with authentic Fender tone. These low-output pickups have a balanced voice with bell-like upper harmonics, punchy mids and thick lows for a sound that easily cuts through a mix. Master volume and tone controls, along with a threeway pickup switch craft your sound.

Topped by a 9.5”-radius maple fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets, the “C”-shaped maple neck is comfortable for all playing styles and ideal for players with smaller hands, or those who use extended chord forms. The six-saddle stringthrough-body hardtail Strat® bridge increases sustain while the bent steel saddles add a touch of “cut” to your tone, and are adjustable for spoton intonation.

The 24” scale adds a bit of warmth and thickness to the guitar’s inherent tone, while granting a slinkier playing feel, making it easier to perform multi-step bends. The guitar’s smaller body is perfect for energetic stage performances and ideal for those with smaller frames while retaining Fender’s famous ergonomic design aesthetic.

A gloss polyester finish protects the body while the neck bears a satin polyurethane finish for fast, easy playability. The aesthetic appointments add a touch of classic Fender style to this modernized design for dazzling style under the spotlights. A cult favorite, the Mustang has evolved from a student-oriented model to the underground champion that laid the foundation for grunge and modern alternative rock.

Comments about Fender Mustang Maple Fingerboard:

Today was the day my brand new Fender Mustang in Olive Green showed up at my local Guitar Center. I ordered it at the store and was incredibly excited to see it. The entire store staff was anxious to see it as well and everyone kept exclaiming how cool it looked. It brought a smile to everyone's face!

I always wanted a Mustang when I was younger and also wanted it to have a maple neck. Well the maple neck on this new model looks and plays fantastic. Extra smooth matte finish on a perfect C shape profile. The gloss on the front of the neck is clear and shiny.

The feel of the guitar is so comfortable. Lightweight, balanced and easy to play sitting down. I play Pedal Steel Guitar and that was another reason why I wanted this guitar. I need a light, balanced and good sounding guitar to be able to pick up, play and sit down again at a moments notice. This definitely fits that need.

And sound, well let me tell you, this little Mustang has a sound all it's own. I've played Fenders for decades and this is the first Mustang I have played. Even the guys at the store noticed the difference immediately when we played it. It has a clear, rounder sound not as harsh or brittle as you might think. The middle pickup selection is my favorite by far. Just the way I like it. I can imagine this guitar will work nicely with pedals and with reverb will be heavenly.

For the price, the fit, finish and quality are top drawer. It is a cool guitar all it's own. I like it just the way it is and will not change anything. I hope this review will help any of you out there who have been thinking about getting one of these jewels. I recommend buying one. You will like what you see and hear.

Great for anyone looking for a quality guitar

    By Chad

Comments about Fender Mustang Maple Fingerboard:

This guitar is a true joy to play. It is very simple to use with the three way toggle switch instead of the traditional sliders. The playability is outstanding as well with the shorter scale. I find this guitar to be very useable in all three positions with the tone control!

Comments about Fender Mustang Maple Fingerboard:

Let's get the bad out of the way. Pickups. They are unusably noisy with any gain. The middle position with both coils engaged acts like a wide humbucker. It's quiet(er) and has a quacky sound, but not that real Fender stratty position 2+4 quack. It's a hollow, empty, dying duck kind of quack. Furthermore, the toggle switch is intermittent (occasionally no sound after switching) and the tone pot wiggles in the pickguard.

Despite all of these problems, I can't put this guitar down. It truly is a joy to play. The neck is comfortable. The smaller scale is noticeable, but it isn't something you need to think about. Gets a bit cramped up after the 17th fret or so for my hands (but it helps with the Holdsworth chords). The back of the neck has a satin feel, but the fretboard is glossy. This is ideal in my opinion. Very quick and easy to play. Not much more to say. Oh, and I think the big CBS headstock definitely adds a bit of mojo to the tone and look, but that's just me.

This guitar plays itself. The 24" scale makes it easy to get around. Comfortable to play even for someone with big hands. It's a light, beautiful, tough guitar that felt great out of the box. While the feel is amazing, the electronics are unusable. Replace the pickups to taste (something noiseless!) and this is guitar will still be a bargain. Any sound from strat to tele and beyond is in this guitar waiting to be unlocked. I may get another.

      Cons

Comments about Fender Mustang Maple Fingerboard:

Love this guitar! Can't play a full-scale instrument due to arthritis, but this Mustang has all the punch and playability I could ever ask for. If I had bought this in 1964 instead of a Gibson Firebird, I don't think I would have ever bought another electric.

The high E is a little dead, but this can be easily fixed at Guitar Center. The important thing is that the Fender pickup and hardtail design provide the capability to perfectly balance the pickups and the intnnation.

        Would not buy, faulty

        By Jacob

        from New braunfels TX

Comments about Fender Mustang Maple Fingerboard:

I got this guitar as a present and the neck pickup went out in two weeks, so I got it replaced and got a new one within a week. And now the bridge pickup isn't working on this one. Fender clearly doesn't have their quality control down on this model. I would avoid this guitar as I've had nothing but problems with it.

Comments about Fender Mustang Maple Fingerboard:

I had been looking for simething different, I have owned Strats, SG' s and LP's. I went to my local Guitar Center and picked up a Fender Duo Sonic. I plugged it into an Orange tube amp. I was surprised on how comfortable the guitar was, lightweight and the maple neck gives the guitar a nice and bright tone. I don't have long skinny fingers so I was attracted to the idea of the guitar being short scale. After playing the guitar a few different times, over the span of a week. I decided to give it a go! The sales associate at Guitar Center was excellent. I had a 20% off coupon which he honored. Though I had to wait a few days to get it, I had a great experience. It was set up fairly well right out of the box. The guitar tech at GC made sure it was tuned and checked the string height to make sure it was playable. I have been happy with the guitar. I honestly would say the the pick ups and sound take a little while to get used to. The guitar has its own character.

Bought for my 15-yr-old to add to his collection. Beautiful guitar - he loves it! He likes the single coil pickups & no gloss on neck - easier to slide. Great feel & sound.
