A solidly built and beautifully finished instrument that has a perfect 'feel' and is incredibly playable!! Seven different pick-up settings provides a fantastic array of sounds. As I frequently play a lot of classic alternative music (I'm a huge fan of Johnny Marr), a clean, slightly chorused/delayed, sound is incredibly important to me - and this guitar sounds beautiful on all settings! With this Tele and my Standard Strat, I feel confident in saying that I have every tone I could ever hope to produce, and that I have no interest in ever buying another guitar.

Purchased this guitar a local Guitar Center store. They had to order it and shipped it to my home. Whole order process was disorganized and unprofessional. I received the guitar and was very disappointed. It was either and open box item, or shame on the Fender company. The protective plastic on the pick guard was all marked up. The humbucker pickup was completely detached on one side; just laying inside the mount. String heights were all out of wack. And the strings had small dark spots on them; they looked corroded. The humbucker pickup had to be reattached and the guitar needed a complete setup. Also worth mention are the tuners on this guitar. Very sloppy; difficult to tune. Sorry, just not a good experience for me all the way around.

Fender Jumps The Shark on this One!

By Robert Kalberer

from Boulder, Co

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I love Telecaster's and over the years have bought about two dozen of them. This is by far the worst one I ever bought (or for that matter worse guitar ever). Once I returned it I saw a second one in the store and played it and it was every bit as bad. The only positive thing I can say about this guitar is the finish looks great (made in China no EPA to deal with!). At its price range I was not expecting it to be the greatest telecaster in the world but I was expected to be at least as good as the Squier telecaster I got (made in Indonesia). In First of all the playability was poor so I had to adjust the neck and the intonation (not a complaint). Once I set it up though I realized it still played horribly and the reason was the angle of the neck to the body was not even correct! I was going to have to re shim the neck which was beyond my skill level. Even on the cheapest guitars they don't normally mess that up. Next was the sound, the best way to describe it is if you had a presence knob on your amplifier and instead of it going from 0 to 10 it went from zero to -10. This guitar makes any amplifier sound like it's presence control is on a -7 or 8! Regardless of which pickup you select it is flat out the thinnest and most sterile sounding guitar I've ever played in the last 35 years. I didn't even think it was possible to make a humbucker sound thin but somehow they were able to do it. They talk about it being made of pine (the cheapest possible wood available) like it's a big deal, there is a reason guitars are not made out of pine it's not like no one ever thought of it. If you own a bar or restaurant and want to buy a guitar just to hang up on the wall and look cool this is it. But if you are even slightly serious about playing guitar you could not pick a worse one even if you tried.

Least Expensive Guitar I own

By Ronald Carignan

from Tampa, FL

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I have all American made higher end guitars and many of them. I have been playing guitar for 40 years through many styles and playing levels. I say all that just to qualify my review. I initially bought this guitar because I wanted a playable inexpensive guitar to try different pickups on. However I really like this guitar. It is Chinese and that's a little embarrassing for an old guitar dog, but I'll get over it in this case. This guitar surprised me. the neck is nice and straight, the frets are crowned and finished, no sharp edges. The setup is reasonably good although I'll dial the setup into my playing style. the color looks nothing like the online pic's. it is almost black only showing the dark brown wood grain when looking close under light. Playability is very good right out of the box. I like all the pickups setup and sound. the coil tap produces a very thin sound when switched on and IMO is the only tone the guitar makes that for me is not useable. over all for me this was an A+ purchase. If you like having double coils and single coils on the same guitar, this guitar does that much better than the price indicates. unless you are an American made guitar snob, you really can't go wrong with this guitar.

    Versatile, inexpensive, and fun!

    By Gregory Anderson

    from Hooterville, SD

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I have wanted a Tele for a very long time but life just kept getting in the way of saving enough to buy one. When I read that Fender was coming out with this guitar I thought I would have to check it out. I've only had it 3 days and outside of my 30 some year old Yamaha SHB400 it is my favorite guitar already! With the 3 pickups and split coil bucker in the bridge you can get traditional Tele tones, Strat tones, and LP tones with one guitar. Seriously, this is one versatile guitar. Fit and finish is just wonderful, say what you want about Chinese guitars, this one is definitely a keeper. I thought I would immediately replace the tuning mechanisms with Fender locking tuners, but the originals are pretty nice, stays in tune quite well even with some heavy duty string bending. I will replace the pots with CTS versions, and might replace the single coil pups with Fender Noiseless, and perhaps a Seymour Duncan SH-11 in the bridge, but in the meantime the pups are good enough. If you didn't look at the back of the neck to see the label stating made in China, you would be hard pressed to tell this one from a much more expensive model. Thanks Fender, you made a winner!!!

    Best value for the money!

    By Mathew

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I've been playing for 35 years, in a variety of different styles, and on a variety of different instruments. I've played Fender, Squier and Fernandez Strat and Tele style instruments for much of my professional life, and can say, that this inexpensive, versatile instrument is simply the best electric guitar I've ever owned. Cosmetically, it's just lovely--I bought the charcoal finish and it just glistens. The finish on the neck doesn't inhibit playing speed, and gives the neck a kind of burnished, aged look. The maple neck, medium frets, and relatively flat fretboard make oblique and pedal-steel type bends effortless. The action as purchased was low and smooth, making playing fast single note lines a breeze. Comping required almost no finger pressure. The pickups are slightly smoother sounding than on a standard Tele, but even that is a plus. You get the basic character but without the potential harshness. The Strat pickup and the humbucker sound great, and the addition of the 5-way switch and a coil tap allow a player to get tones almost identical to the 'notched' sounds one can get with a Strat. This guitar is affordable, and sounds better than the current Fender instruments coming from Mexico. It sounds as good as its American counterparts, and if you can accept that the purchase of an American Fender is more about prestige than any appreciable difference in quality, you'll get a terrific instrument for half the price.

    Suprisingly well built

    By WILLIAM BURTON

    from Mount Vernon, NY

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I've been playing guitar off and on for about 10 yrs. now, and I recently traded in a Squier Vintage Modified tele for the modern player tele thinking it would be about the same since they both have 3 pickups with a 5 way switch, and thinking the Squier is more or less a low price Fender. I plugged up the Fender Modern Player tele in the store, and from the minute i started playing i could feel the difference in the body and neck. The pickup arrangement is very usable, you still get that warm tele sound from the neck pickup, and for the more heavy rock sounds you have the strat and humbucker pickups in the middle and bridge positions. The maple neck on this guitar is so smooth and the body feels strong and well built you won't be able to put it down. I bought the Charcoal Transparent about 3 months ago, and haven't stop playing it since. I don't care where this guitar was made the craftsmanship is unbelievable, and the sound is true tele with an added twist.

        Less than average

        By Peter Chung

        from California

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I'm not a professional and played guitar only for about 4-5 years, but I know a mediocre/bad guitar when i play one. The nice fellows at GuitarCenter would tell me it was great and stuff but wow was I manipulated. This guitar has its perks, of course. I was immediately attracted to the fact that it had a humbucker, a single-coil, and a telecaster pickup. It has got some nice looks, too. The neck is quite comfortable to play on as well. This guitar is ALL about that, though. NOTHING ELSE is good about it. It's made in China first of all and at first, I thought I could maybe trust it this one time BUT NO. The neck's got more issues than Marilyn Manson. I thought it was a problem with the strings or the way i was playing but it has got a lot of fret buzz so the notes dont clearly ring which is incredibly frustrating to the ears. The tuners don't hold up too well, either. The knobs do too much or too little. Nothing but frustration from this guitar. I personally believe that the reason for this overpricing is only because of the pickups. Although they do not even sound that good, this arrangement is uncommon in most axes. I do not see any good reason to buy this guitar (paraphrasing my whole review)

        Really nice guitar

        By Herbert Hartley

        from Sims NC

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I ordered this Tele and it arrived today. I unpacked it... very well packed for shipping. I plugged it up after tuning and played for a while. The guitar has a nice playing neck. The 3 PU's all have that classic Fender sound. The dual coil and split switch really has a nice sound in both positions. The Tele & Strat PU both sound good. The finish is absolutely gorgeous. I have the Honey Maple finish. I was a bit concerned since I never bought a guitar before that I had not played in a store. No one had this guitar in stock. Based on the price and the features, I decided to take the chance and have no regrets about buying it sight and sound unseen. I have been a Gibson SG player and wanted to get a decent but not necessarily top line Fender. I believe I have made a good choice and have a solid working Fender.

        By Ryan S

        from Greenville, SC

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I'm a chicken picker/western swing player. I love this guitar so much! A friend of mine owns an American Telecaster Plus from the 90's and this import makes that American look and sound like a cheap guitar. This guitar, IMHO is the best buy for the money. It has a plethora of sounds, it plays amazing, stays in tune, and beats the hell out of any American Fender that I've owned. It's the best money you'll ever spend. Wow!

This is a great guitar for the money. You can't go wrong. I don't care where it's made, the craftsmanship is excellent. It sounds and plays great. I got mine in the charcoal. It's absolutely beautiful. Yes, it looks black, not brown, and I love it. The wood grain is pretty and is visible up close. At a distance it has a black lacquer finish look to it. Love the tele and humbucking pick ups. Great guitar at this price.

I'm officially converted to a Fender lover

        By Zoe Vette

        from Mt Holly, NC

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I have played humbucker sporting guitars since... forever. I've been searching for the perfect guitar for 28 years. My favorite guitar is my '63 Gibson Melody Maker, but I don't risk taking this to dive bars when my band plays. I went on a search for a back up.... and NEVER in a MILLION YEARS did I imagine I'd wind up with a Fender. After being let down with the new midline (aka affordable) Gibsons, I picked up this Modern Player Tele. The maple neck was different... but somehow much better. Easier to play. Perfect neck shape. I took it to rehearsal and when I plugged it in, I really wasn't expecting the aggressive sounds I heard. Even backing off the gain, it still sounds mean. This is a wonderful surprise at this price. The photo is not a true representation of its color. It is CHARCOAL, not brown. You have to hold it up to the light to see the wood grain. Hidden beauty. Get. this. guitar.

I went to Guitar Center to get a new guitar. I was set on getting a Fender Telecaster and the lower price drew me to this. After playing 2 or 3 of them, I have determined that you're better off spending the extra 100 dollars and getting a Standard Telecaster. The signature telecaster tone comes from the bridge pickup. With the bridge pickup replaced, it doesn't sound like a telecaster. Just get a standard or an HH. It's not much more and it's worth the difference in quality.

        By Bill Mogolov

        from Des Moines, Iowa

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

When I was at the GC recently, I really was just looking....not necessarily looking to buy anything in particular. I happened to see a couple of American Telecasters so I picked one up and tested it out. It was nice but not nice enough to "trip my trigger." A sales person came over and handed me another Telecaster and said "here, try this Chinese made Telecaster." My initial thought was that she was joking but I thought....what the heck....and I tried it out. I can only say that I was absolutely amazed at how it played and sounded. I bought one on the spot. No regrets whatsoever. I play it through a Line 6 Spyder IV 150 and it sounds beyond incredible! I bought the charcoal color which seems to be the slower selling color but it looks fantastic. If I had this guitar stolen, I would immediately replace it. A great guitar at a great price!

        good guitar

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

This is a good guitar no matter where its built. A good guitar plays well, sounds good to you and thats all that matters. Not going to tell you about myself just review the instrument These MPT(modern player tele) are nice guitars, if you can find the right one. In search for my own MPT I went to probably 15 different music stores and played many of them and read just about every review out there. Some I played were not that well set up and no one really wants to pay for some work to be done on a new guitar so I suggest you go and play one before you buy one. So after I found mine at the Memphis GC I can say out of the 25 or so MPT i played it was the nicest. Beautiful flaming on the neck, nice set up(although i was told the tech would set it up however i wanted if i bought it but no need), but lets be honest, do you really think such a inexpensive guitar would have great pickups. The ones that come in it aren't that bad but I started with a change out for diMarzio tone zone and 1meg pot, let me tell this beast rocks now. That pickup made all the difference in the world, the sound is full and phat. This is now my favorite guitar ever. I will soon be upgrading the single coils and then start saving for another MPT.

I have always been a huge fan and player of Fender basses and guitars. I went to GC looking for an inexpensive guitar that had the right feel, sound, and features at a certain price point. Although I would have preferred to purchase an American made Tele, I don't have enough spare money at present. I saw the Honey Burst model, played it and fell in love with it. The feel, sound, and look were all really great, especially at this price point. My friend who is just an amazing jazz/funk/rock guitarist played it, and said emphatically - buy it! He and I demo'd it on two different amps and really put it through a work out and it played, performed and sounded great! I won't pretend that it's on the same level with the high-end Tele's, but at this price it is a great guitar. I will eventually change the pick-ups, but even with the stock ones, it is worth having.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I just picked this up a few days ago. I'm well aware that it's bottom-end for Fender, and that I'll probably need to update the electronics before too terribly long. BUT, that being said... the feel of this thing is killer, it has fantastic action, and the tone is as sweet as the honey-burst finish. The lipstick in the neck position is phenomenal - my new go-to for rhythm work. I really don't have anything bad to say.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

Overall guitar has great versatility, nice neck, and very nice aesthetic beauty (I have the honey burst and the wood is just as gorgeous as the photos). This guitar can be set up to give you a great blues sound and the humbucker can crunch and allow you to a "rock" tone . I am not overly impressed with the electronics and will replace the humbucker though. The main issue is frett buzz and tons of it. Guitar was poorly setup on Fender's part. Almost every note on the G and b string were littered with frett buzz. Upon inspecting the neck I saw that my guitar was back bowed and adjusted the truss rod and setup up the action. This seemed to eliminate 90% of the frett buzz and now this guitar plays like a beauty. Worth checking out.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Electric Guitar:

I was very surprised at the quality and sound of this Chinese made Fender Telecaster. I've had it a week and have hardly put it down. The neck is straight, all I had to do was some minor lowering of the strings. I have a Humingbird, a Martin Custom Shop, Gretsch, Les Paul, Wildkat and an Ovation. This guitar goes on the same rack. Love it. Great price, fantastic value. Sounds great and is lots of fun to play.
