I got this bass a couple years ago and it hasn't failed me yet. It sounds great and looks great. A lot of people question the bass because of the lack of a tone knob, but believe me. The tone is PERFECT. Mark Hoppus knew exactly what he was doing when he made this bass. This bass is great for virtually any style of music, but if you play pop punk it's no question - BUY THIS BASS. It's a great deal for the price.

Well, This must be said. This bass is made in Mexico. I know that Fender basses made in Mexico are cheaper and not quite the quality of the Japan or American made basses. It only has a volume knob and no tone control. So, if you want a bass that's overpriced, not that well made and has no tone buy this bass. But, believe me a bass without tone sucks. Don't waste your money on this bass, buy a precision bass or jazz bass.

"One-Trick Pony", but I love this bass!

About Me Experienced

Pros

  • "Hybrid" Bass
  • Good Pick Up
  • Good Tone
  • Nice Features

Cons

  • "Limited"

Best Uses

Comments about Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Bass Guitar:

I purchased this bass off the GC "used" website about 6 months ago. I always wanted a "Hoppus" sig, mainly because it is a "hybrid" bass- a Jazz bass body paired with a Precision Neck and Pickup (reverse). I purchased the "newer" / 2nd Generation Sig, which is made of Ash instead of Alder (in addition to being "see-through" on the finish). The pickup was "reversed" from the "traditional" Fender Precision placement but the sound is not too drastic in tonal difference.

The bass is slightly limited with only a Volume pot (no tone knob), so sometimes you have to "tinker" with your amps EQ to get a desired sound (i.e. "Fat", "Smooth"/cutting the High Frequencies). It comes stock with an aftermarket Duncan SPB-3 Quarter Pound pickup that is fat/agressive but slighly "Mid-Scooped".

Overall I really enjoy this bass- I Precision guy till I die and I really love that it is a J-Bass body. Fender did a much better job with the 2nd Generation signatures as opposed to the first run.

    Perfect Pop-Punk Bass

    By Logan

    from Saint Louis/Columbia, MO

Comments about Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Bass Guitar:

I got the Surf Green bass in 2011 so it's part the "Second Generation" of Hoppus basses that are currently sold today. That means the body is now made of Ash instead of Alder, the pickups are switched for a new tone, the headstock decal is now black, and the paint jobs are different. Mine is the Transparent Surf Green. Its not as cool look as the solid original, but its not enough to cause any dislike. Most people that dislike it say its due to the simplicity, but I think thats what makes it great for Pop-Punk style music. It just means I can plug it in and get playing! It's a great bass for anyone looking for a pop-punk tone or who is a Blink-182 fan. I plan on eventually owning enough of these that my collection can reflect his. Thats going to take a lot of time and money though, but hey I'm 1/24th of the way there haha. Again great bass for this style of music. Love it.

    Awesome Bass!

Comments about Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Bass Guitar:

I purchased this bass for my sons graduation gift. He was so excited when he opened it. I purchased the surf green transparent color. It is a beautiful color. I would have picked pink but they were out. I am assuming this is a popular color for young men. Anyway, I have learned a lot about this bass guitar as it is the only thing he talks about. Thanks for making me #1 in his eyes for a minute...till he opened it anyway! We love it!!!

    Great bass !

    By Katharine Lapre

Comments about Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Bass Guitar:

I was able to get my hands on a used Mark Hoppus bass at a great price in the green color. Love the punchy, trebly sound. Very easy to play. I don't know if the prior owner adjusted the action. Don't let the one knob deceive you. Has great tone and like other reviews, good for punk and alternative rock. I've tried Green Day and Nirvana on this bass and it goes well. One knob is all you need. Try for yourself and you'll see. I would definitely recommend.

    Still an Awesome Bass

    By Steven Willis

Comments about Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Bass Guitar:

Allow me to review this again. I have before in the past but it was not the best review. This bass still earns five stars in my book. It's amazing for Punk, Pop-punk Alternative, things of that nature. However with the right amount of tweaking it can play almost anything. I have the bass in original shell pink. As it was given to me by a family member at Christmas. I Would not trade this bass for anything. The SPB-3's are fantastic, just get this bass set up in a music store and you're ready to go. I recommend this to any pop-punk fan.

    This Bass is Best!

Comments about Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Bass Guitar:

I got this bass for Christmas, Shell Pink, used gear because my mom is awesome. Anyway, i plugged this bass in that morning, and was taken away by the sound, my local music store set it up a few weeks before. The SPB-3's are absolutely amazing I recommend this bass to pop-punk players but it is extremely versatile and can play almost anything.

Comments about Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Bass Guitar:

I got this bass about 6 years ago and recorded 2 cd's with my band with it. It is one of the best basses I have ever owned. The sound is great and it play's good. Mine is white and is the Mexican made and the best thing about it is the price! I love the 1 knob that is all you need on a bass. When all said in done at the end of the day this bass is a good buy.

    Get it While it Lasts!

    By Dave

    from Milwaukee WI

Comments about Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Bass Guitar:

NOTE: The Hoppus that is shown here is the original Mark Hoppus Jazz Bass, and not the updated one. The new one has that 70's looking neck with the better finish like the new Standard series, the see-through finishes on the body (the green looks awful), and the reversed SPB-3 Quarter-Pound P pickup, which changes the overall tone and attack slightly (but enough). The original Hoppus has the traditional pickup placement that Fender's used since the 50's. The New Hoppus should have been offered as a Custom Shop bass, rather than discontinue this bass. I've had this bass for 2 years now. The sound rivals my American Standard P-Bass which has the same pickup. The lack of tone knob is GREAT! If you want a bass that you can do tone changes with, get an active bass, as with passive basses, the tone controls only subtract the highs anyway. The neck is your typical Mexican made Standard Precission. There have been some downsides to this bass: 1) The tuner bushings are loose, and fall off sometimes when changing strings; not that major, but annoying. 2) The ferrels are loose, and again can fall out when changing strings (apparently my bass isn't the only one, as I've seen 2 used Hoppus' with missing ferrels). Also, the paint itself is rather thin, and I can now see the wood through the finish on the right arm contour on the front of the body, which I think looks cooler than the shiny Daphne Blue, but might annoy others. I bought this bass as a backup to my American Standard, and it now gets used as much as the American Standard. The SPB-3 pickup has more of a vintage tone with higher output and more punch than a standard P pickup. It's string-through-body, giving it better resonance than other Standard Precissions. Price is a bit steep, but worth it, even with it's shortcomings, especailly considering the new Hoppus is kinda backwards, and this bass is discontinued.
