From Clean to Dirt, a very versatile amp

By Phil Manuel

from Mission, KS

Comments about Fender Limited Edition Blues Jr. Amethyst 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amplifier:

It was time to downsize from my Deluxe Reverb, just didn't need the 40 watts any longer. I searched and auditioned a lot of smaller combo amps, including the Tweed NOS version of the Blues Jr. I saw this amp being offered, and it turned my eye - due to the Celestion A-Type speaker. The amethyst covering is a nice departure from the Tweed amps everywhere you look.

Now, it takes some break-in for the speaker to really show, but after about 20 hours of use, the combination of the amp and speaker really sets it apart. From clean to dirt, this amp can do it all. I've head complaints about the reverb on the BJ, but I've found the reverb very lush, only need it at 2-3 to add that depth I like.

The "Fat" switch adds some growl, and it's usable, but not going to appeal to players who want TS like tone. The amp is more suited for Blues, Jazz, Pop, and Country/Roots, rather than Metal. You can use your favorite pedals in front of the amp, as there are no effect loop input/output, though I don't hear any negatives with using my pedals in this setup. All said, this version of the the Blues Jr. III is impressive, and more than does the job for me.

Comments about Fender Limited Edition Blues Jr. Amethyst 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I came across this amp by accident when I was guitar shopping at GC. Trying to get away from the noise on the sales floor, I went into the enclosed area where you can actually hear what you're doing. I just happened to plug into this amp with a Godin 5th Ave Kingpin II archtop because the amp was next to the stool I sat on. First impression was that it looked like a small simple amp, nothing more than 1 input and a few dials. I didn't care since the amp itself wasn't my focus, yet it quickly became my focus. The first thing that struck me was the tone, it was everything I was always after but could never find. Secondly, the simple controls helped me dial into numerous settings easily, I knew how to work it instantly to get the sounds I wanted. It was warm, powerful ... just a very rich and luscious sound even at low volumes. I've been playing through a Peavey Classic 30 for years, a great amp no doubt, but I found it to be too heavy to lug around and too loud to play in my home studio, to the point it really couldnt be appreciated at all. This version of the Blues Jr is 10 pounds lighter and as loud as I'll ever need it to be. Not that I'm into loud for the sake of loud, but theres no doubt it will stand out well in small venues. The verb is excellent, rich and full. When I got it home I ran my archtop through it, my nlon string, my acoustic and then my solid body electric ... each and every one sounded amazing with a few minor dial adjustments and no pedals. Then the pedals ... when plugged in either one at a time or simultaneously created the sound the pedal was designed to create, super nicely ... the amp takes pedals really nicely.

For me, the huge advantage is the simplicity. After years of trying synths, modeling amps or anything that required technical learning curve trial and error ... I relish in the thought that I can now play any of my guitars with gorgeous, lush tones enjoying the precious time I have to play. Worth every penny!

Comments about Fender Limited Edition Blues Jr. Amethyst 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amplifier:

My father just purchased himself this amplifier to get into electric guitar along with an American elite stratocaster HSS. I personally own the standard Blues Jr III and I must say WOW. The Celestian speaker in here gives this version of the blues Jr a warmer more rounded tone than the original and the color is absolutely beautiful.

Like any blues Jr. this amp provides a wonderful base tone for the money. It has beautiful cleans that can be very very bright or dark and warm. The volume can be quite enough for practicing at home and loud enough to play over a drummer. Another lovely aspect of this amp is that it is great for pedals. Its straight forward clean tone provides a great base to build tones. Do not expect this to do high gain without a pedal. However if you want to you can run a nice distortion in front and get all the saturation you want.

If you are looking to have ONE amp that can be molded by pedals to do just about anything and that has a wonderful clean/ crunch tone on its own look no further. This is a swiss army knife of tone and I would highly recommend it. The only downside is that it does not have an FX Loop so if you are looking for that you might want to check out an Egnater amplifier in a similar price range. Oh and I almost forgot to mention that fender has, in my opinion, some of the best built in reverb out of any amp you will find in the price range!

Comments about Fender Limited Edition Blues Jr. Amethyst 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amplifier:

I have had my amp for about three weeks. I have previously owned a tweed NOS blues junior, so I have some basis for comparing the two amps. The new blues junior III with the Celestron speaker covers a lot of sonic ground. It gets the clean Fender chime and can scream. The speaker brakes up sooner and is much warmer than the eminence speaker in the tweed. I have owned a lot of amps over the years, I believe the blues junior is the best value on the market, and sounds great. Now, with this speaker it does it all.

Comments about Fender Limited Edition Blues Jr. Amethyst 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amplifier:

The Fender Blues Jr. Combo Amp has an array Of uses for any Guitarist in need. Gain can provide exceptional Sustaine. Master Knob can bring presence from a single room to the deep echo of a Concert hall. A much better Amp over its predecessor the Superchamp. Though it will be a few pounds heavier to carry due to the more powerful Tubes and premium speaker inside. This is a staple for medium to large venues comparable to its bigger cousins The Deluxe Reverb and Twin Reverbs.

Comments about Fender Limited Edition Blues Jr. Amethyst 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amplifier:

This review has 2 parts...1 for the amp and the other for Guitar Center. The amp amazing. The stock Blues jr is great but the Celstion A type really opens up the tone of this amp SIGNIFICANTLY. This speaker allows you to crank the bass and it never gets flabby. The highs are very sweet as well. I tried my Walrus Jupiter Fuzz and the speaker never got loose and sounded fantastic. This Fuzz can freak out some amps but not this one. This amp really has an old school 60's Fender flavor which is really nice. I had a Blues Deluxe and this new Blues jr blows that amp away. Now for the 2nd part. This amp wasn't on floor in my local store in Tyler Texas. They had to order it from a Dallas Texas store which should have taken 3 days to arrive. After a week I found out Guitar Centers corporate people decided to send it from Ventura Ca instead without telling anybody. When it came in it was packed in a large box loosely wrapped in bubble wrap lying face down. When I fired the amp up it squealed and hissed and popped..obviously damaged. It looked like a 4 year old packed this amp.Trying to get a replacement took over an extra week even though it was also in Dallas which is only 2 hrs away. They just didn't remember to ship it or didn't care. After speaking to Jennifer the manager in Tyler she drove to meet a Dallas GC employee so she could personally pick up my amp. She went way above the call of duty. They Tyler store employees are great but Guitar Center needs some SERIOUS work in customer service in other locations.
