When Kurt Cobain hit the stage, it was very often with a Mustang guitar”an enigmatic anti-hero figure with an esoteric anti-hero instrument. It' with great pride then that Fender introduces the Kurt Cobain Mustang, which evokes the man, the band, the sound and the times, and gives an authentically crafted nod to one of the most unlikely guitars to ever find itself at the center of a musical maelstrom.
See for yourself”go back and watch the famous 1991 video for œSmells Like Teen Spirit, and there he is with it is slung over his shoulder. Or think back to when you saw them on the ™93-™94 In Utero tour, when he seldom went onstage with anything but a Mustang. Quite often and especially later on, Mustangs were a big influence on Kurt Cobain's distinctive sound.
Inspired by his arsenal of modded guitars, the new Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang boasts highly distinctive features including an angled single-coil Mustang neck pickup and ferocious Seymour Duncan JB humbucking bridge pickup mounted directly to the body, dual on-off/phase in-out switches for each pickup, a polyester-finished alder body and an Adjusto-Matic bridge with dynamic vibrato tailpiece.
Other features include the classic 24 Mustang scale length, C-shaped maple neck with urethane finish, 7.25 radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 vintage-style frets and vintage-style ivory dot inlays, four-ply pickguard, master volume and tone controls, vintage-style tuners, and chrome hardware. When I saw this guitar hanging in the left-handed display rack, I was immediately in love. It stood out like a lighthouse in the fog, beckoning me on... When I finally got to hold it in my hands, I couldn't believe this was a Fender Mustang. It was beautiful, and I was taken aback by the quality build on this guitar. Really awesome "Lake Placid Blue" covered the body, with a lighter shade set of racing stripes expertly applied to the guitar's body. An even coat of polyurethane blanketed this awesome body. The neck was in itself an object of perfection; aged very well, maple, straight as an arrow, as close to perfection as you can get. Here's where the rubber hits the proverbial road, however. Plugged into a Fender Super Sonic stack (that's what I have at home...), this thing blew me right out the front door. Man, does it do grunge well. It also covers a sweet Jazz note, and Rock 'n Roll, as well. I laughed when I saw the price, though. However, the salesman reassured me that the posted price was the price I'd pay to walk out the door with it. I had to have it, and so, I pawned and sold whatever it took to get it. Yes! I'm looking at it as I type. If you loved Kurt, this is the perfect way to honor him. If you love versatility and great sound in a guitar, then you owe it to yourself to get one. This one is a keeper. Oh yes. AND... I pity the soul of the person who tries to confiscate this work of art. Well, I think that covers it. You'll blow the competition away. Get one!!!
This guitar is absolutely AMAZING!!! I tried it out at GC a few days ago and I was shocked at how it played and looked. It had a very full and clear sound, the humbucker and single coil were awesome, and you can't go wrong with blue. If i had a thousand bucks, i would buy it tomorrow.
