Overview

When Kurt Cobain hit the stage, it was very often with a Mustang guitar”an enigmatic anti-hero figure with an esoteric anti-hero instrument. It' with great pride then that Fender introduces the Kurt Cobain Mustang, which evokes the man, the band, the sound and the times, and gives an authentically crafted nod to one of the most unlikely guitars to ever find itself at the center of a musical maelstrom.

See for yourself”go back and watch the famous 1991 video for œSmells Like Teen Spirit, and there he is with it is slung over his shoulder. Or think back to when you saw them on the ™93-™94 In Utero tour, when he seldom went onstage with anything but a Mustang. Quite often and especially later on, Mustangs were a big influence on Kurt Cobain's distinctive sound.

Inspired by his arsenal of modded guitars, the new Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang boasts highly distinctive features including an angled single-coil Mustang neck pickup and ferocious Seymour Duncan JB humbucking bridge pickup mounted directly to the body, dual on-off/phase in-out switches for each pickup, a polyester-finished alder body and an Adjusto-Matic bridge with dynamic vibrato tailpiece.

Other features include the classic 24 Mustang scale length, C-shaped maple neck with urethane finish, 7.25 radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 vintage-style frets and vintage-style ivory dot inlays, four-ply pickguard, master volume and tone controls, vintage-style tuners, and chrome hardware. Available in right- and left-handed models.

Features
  • Alder body
  • 24" Scale C-shape maple neck
  • Rosewood fretboard
  • Seymour Duncan JB bridge humbucker mounted directly to the body

I have always been a fan of Mustang guitars. I had a re-issue about 9 years ago and with my smaller than average hands this guitar fits like a glove. I love the Kurt Cobain signature model not only because of the cool color combination of the blue body and pick guard but the Seymour Duncan bridge pick ups are a great improvement. I love the low end growl on this guitar and the smooth silky sound of the neck pick up. Plus being able to blend them together with the switches is awesome! Love the weight of this guitar, the sound and the ease of finger positions. The smaller scale makes it easier for me to play a wider range of scales and complex chords.

The quality of the neck and string height/action is fabulous! The pick-ups sound amazing! The only two issues I have are: it's hard to maintain a good tightness on the tremolo bar screw... too tight and it won't move, too loose and the bar falls out. Needs a better design. The second issue is that the pick up selector switches seem to crackle more frequently than other Fender guitars I have. You'll need to get a can of circuit cleaner with this guitar. But overall I am VERY happy with this quitar.
For me, I am happy to pay a little more for a specialized guitar that fits my smaller frame/hands. Love it! I know this is more of a custom guitar with custom pickups so the price seems pretty good. But I was happy to find a used on through Musicians Friend. It did not look used at all and I am very happy with the value.

I had the privelage to try this Mustang out at my local authorized dealer. I always wanted to know how Mustangs felt, considering I want a Jaguar and want to know how the shorter scale length feels. I had the employee clean it off and tune it up for me, and off I go to the amp to test it. First thing right off the bat is it had a horrible factory setup. Action was very high and intonation not on par. I also noticed the rosewood fretboard looked very cheap compared to what Fender normally does, it looks more like a cheap baked maple rather than rosewood. The biggest problem I had with this guitar were the pickups and the sounds they produced. With the switches, you can create in and out of phase pickup combinations, making thinner or fatter tones. The only problem with that though, is that I found the out of phase thin tones are completely unusable. The signal becomes so thin there is a noticable volume decrease and the guitar just sounds too thin and shrilly. The Seymour Duncan JB Humbucker they added is OK but it really doesn't sound like a Fender or anything Vintage for that matter. The bridge on the guitar seemed to be very stable and high quality. Neck felt good, and guitar felt solid. I just honestly think that Fender didn't really pay too much attention to Kurt's Mustang as they would if he were still alive. They KNOW that these were going to fly off the shelfs cause of Kurt's name, but the quality and tones I feel could have been much better. That being said, it is still a good guitar for the money. Better off with Kurt's Jag or any other Jag for that matter if you want that grunge tone.

Fantastic

Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Electric Guitar:

What a fantastic guitar. Before even considering buying a new guitar, I have had a Fender Squier Stratocaster. Though it was kind of weird sounding, it was a good guitar. Regardless I headed to GC to get a new one for my birthday. The guitar I had in my mind was a Squier Jag, but at the time they were completely out. I asked the guy behind the counter "hey, say I'm in a grunge band (which i am), what would be a good guitar to use?" And instantly he said "I've got the one for you." He pointed out this beauty and I was sold. It had such a nice twangy clean sound with the tone turned up, and the softer sound sounds fantastic with the tone down a bit. You can definitely hear the humbucker when it's on and it definitely adds a level of depth to chords, as well as making playing higher solos a lot easier. The combination of the neck and double humbucker makes a clean and twangy sound, and if you want a bit of fuzz just switch off the neck pickup. With distortion his guitar sounds wonderful, though I would recommend a more bassy distortion as opposed to high treble distortion for a more fitting sound. Though the tone keys are kind of cheap, they can hold for a jam session before you need to retune (changing keys does take a couple of tries). All in all I'd recommend this guitar to anyone, and if you want a seattle grunge kind of sound go grab yourself a Boss Mega Distortion pedal. Turn up that bottom tone and turn the distortion and gain boost all the way and you're good to go.

Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Electric Guitar:

I've had a thing for Fender Mustangs since I have been playing guitar. I also should note that though I am a fan of Nirvana, I would normally never buy an Artist Signature model. That said, I've played 60s Mustangs and I've played the reissues, and this is by far the best incarnation of the Mustang ever made. Fender takes what once was a starter guitar and allows it to "come of age" with quality parts and electronics. The addition of the SD humbucker is just icing on the cake. The trem is also a vast improvement over older models. Price tag stung a little, but this thing has quickly become my favorite guitar. Fender was also smart enough not to stick a cheesy faux-signature or anything silly like that on the guitar. I absolutely love it.

    Best mustang you can buy.

    By Matt C.

Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Electric Guitar:

Put images of Nirvana fan-boys foaming at the mouth aside, and consider this the best playing and sounding Mustang Fender has ever made. I have had several others in the past and this guitar is far superior in build quality and features. The 'floating' bridge has always been the Achilles heal of the mustang, the replacement of the 'adjust-o-matic' bridge keeps the guitar in perfect tune. The addition of the in-wood humbucker give you a great hi-gain tone and sustain. Lastly this guitar is made out of Alder wood instead of the standard basswood found in previous Japanese Mustangs. Lastly the pickup selectors have been dropped down into the guitar to keep the player from hitting them when strumming. Very convenient to anyone who has ever owned a mustang and knows the frustration of accidentally switching off the guitar. Fender Japan has been making these on their own for years, but only recently has Fender USA been marketing them under the Cobain name. Japanese Mustangs are great, and this is just another example of a great guitar with some much appreciated upgrades for the playing musician. If you're a fan-boy looking to emulate Nirvana, get your self a strat and smash it! Only downside is no hard shell case. Lame.

    Incredible guitar for the price

    By Nicolas La Torre

    from Bs. As. Argentina

Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Electric Guitar:

An absolute rock machine. Despite it is a signature model, you can get from it lots of different sounds. Not just the ones we are used to from Kurt. From Jazz to Grunge.
i'm a strato user. To be able to play with both, single and humbuckers is amazing. This guitar sings through my fender blues deluxe.
I also tried it with a Marshal JCM 900, and i tell you... it can bring down a whole building.
The guitar has a flawless finish. Made in Japan. The factory setup works like a charm.
I'm not that crazy about the vibrato bridge, but it doesn't do any harm.
The price for this baby is very good. I bought mine as MINT, and it arrived better than new. I just can't belive that Fender didn't even include a gig bag with it.

The Cobain guitar I've been waiting for...

    By christapher Larsen

    from Sacramento, CA

Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Electric Guitar:

This guitar is worth every penny. I purchased a Jagstang only to be disappointed. The guitar did not have the tone I was looking for, about the only thing it was good for was the feedback. Which it tended to feedback when you really wouldn't want it to. Enter the mustang. I have always wanted to own a Mustang, I played around on a few but they never screamed "buy me". I opened this baby up at the Guitar center and could tell it was a beast without it even being plugged in. This guitar sounds just like the guitar I've heard on every Nirvana record. It is so precise it's uncanny. I would definitely recommend it for any true Nirvana fan.

A Must Have for Nirvana/Mustang fans

    By Jesse Thoune

    from Wisconsin

Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Electric Guitar:

I definately recommend this guitar to any fans of the Mustang or "alternative" Fender guitars. Don't have to be a Kurt Cobain enthusiast to enjoy this guitar.
The biggest improvement on this guitar vs all other Mustangs is the tuneomatic bridge. The Seymour Duncan JB pickup is great and really delivers the "Nirvana" tone, but the bridge is probably the best feature on this model. It stays in tune much better than other Mustangs and the overall feel of the guitar is solid. Doesn't feel like you're playing a cheap, entry level guitar. Also I prefer vintage style tuners so I was happy they are on the guitar. The neck pickup has a nice warm tone and still retains classic Fender tone.
The quality on this guitar is top-notch. I have owned a few Fender Japan models and they are every bit as good of quailty as my American Deluxe Strat. I bought the guitar sight onseen from Musicians Friend without ever playing one.(I took a chance because I've owned another Fender Japan Mustang and was happy with the quality/playability. Very nice playing guitar, action was perfect right out of the box. Finish is awesome as well. I got the Dark Lake Placid Blue with the Competition stripe.
Price is a little high but like I said, the quality on the guitar is top-notch.

    Cobain Mustang

    By Ian 365

    from Kansas

Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Electric Guitar:

Tried this out at my local Fender dealer. First thing I noticed was that humbucker sounds very tight, great for palm muting, soloing and playing metal. Decent cleans as well. The neck pickup is not as good as an American Standard Stratocaster, nor is it as good as a '66 Mustang's, but this is a rock guitar, so it is good enough. It really delivers nice, loose sounding cleans. The neck is very comfortable and looks nice. The guitar is small, but not too small, and is very comfortable.

I own a dozen high end guitars and this may be my favorite!

    By STARVINGARTIST

    from Oak Lawn, IL

Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Electric Guitar:

It is well worth the $ and after playing it...would expect it to cost more. It not only has looks but it has complete versatility!
The tone on this guitar is just amazing! My bass player calls it COCO CRISP. It cuts through the sound and is clean yet powerful and incredible high end tone. I was expecting it to be more one dimensional and lean towards the distorted grunge arena BUT am pleasantly surprised with it's versatility!
My new favorite guitar....I have never heard such tone and versatility come from any other guitar...I have a GIBSON LES PAUL, a RICKENBACKER 12-string, FENDER STRATOCATER, etc.
I would expect this KURT COBAIN model to cost more...especially after playing it. Amazing looks and wide range of sounds.
