Do not buy this amp new! These saturate the used market (generally too loud for most people) and you can find a great one for cheaper. This amp is an EXCELLENT base for modification and can sound like a boutique amp if you have the experience and patience. I love this amp! I just don't love it stock... Here's what I recommend:

1) The stock speaker is thin - I bought a WGS G12C and I run a G12C/S through an extension cab. Improvements all around. More bass clarity and warmth. I hear Celestion Vintage 30s work well.
2) Use a 12AT7 in P3 tube. This really cleans up the output channel signal and gives you more control of the volume pot so it doesn't jump to super loud volumes as quickly.
3) Buy a mod kit like Fromel makes. Only do the work if you are talented at working on PCBs. The stock components are very fragile and cause many of the problems other people have with the amp. I had leaky filter caps and one of the box resistors failed. Fromel addresses all of these and adds an excellent tone stack. I did these mods and am blown away. I will never part with this amp because I am in tonal nirvana.
4) Last, and easily most important, BUY A NEW HANDLE RIGHT AWAY! Don't carry this EVER by the stock handle! Read the reviews on the handle! It is horrible that Fender ever made a 50lb amp with a hand I wouldn't trust on a bag of groceries.

Otherwise, it's a solidly-built cab with all the bones of a superb amp. For this price range new, don't buy it. There are better options.

Bought a Fender HRD III and was excited about the sound for the price. Less than 45 days later it started buzzing really loud. Thought I did my research by looking at reviews on sales web sites. Turns out the problem I have is very widespread. Search for Hot Rod Deluxe Issues on Google. The quality of the amp is very poor and I am very dissapointed in Fender for even releasing such a low quality amp.

Comments about Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I never write reviews for anything, but I've never been more bummed about something I bought. I've owned this amp for almost two years, and already it's falling apart. Fender wont do anything about it since I played out with it one time. From the beginning the reverb gave a high pitch feedback ring, the clean channel no longer works at all anymore. The tone sounds like total butt now anyway you turn the knobs. I also had to replace a power tube within the first six months of owning it. A huge let down from a company I've supported for a long time. I SHOULD HAVE LISTEN TO THE SALES REP AT GUITAR CENTER AND WENT WITH THE VOX AC 30. This thing is so frustrating, I play way less guitar now because it.

Comments about Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I thought I was getting a nice amp. It sounded good at first then after about 3 months started to gets lots of noise when I played like a bunch of crackling that overpowers the guitar sound coming through the amp. Looked this up and turns out this is a big problem for this amp just search on google and youtube wish I would of before I bought this amp. Took it to get repaired, the place that fender said I had to take it to said they could not find a problem and wanted to charge me for it saying fender would not pay if nothing is wrong. So now I'm stuck with an amp that's does not work properly and just going to try and fix it myself by replacing the parts that the electronic repair people on youtube say is what fixed theirs. Also, if you search the amp many other problems come up. Could be a nice amp if it was made with quality electronics.

The best amp I have ever had. Didn't buy new which is good in a way. Not sure if it applies to all the deluxe 111 amplifiers. But there's 2 capicitors in the amp. that is prone to failure. So far mine is working really great. All the power you need and then some. Even the weight is great. When you compare it to a vox with twin speakers.

Comments about Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I have had this amp since 2003. I have modified it to my liking. I swapped out the speaker for a classic 100w Carvin British Series, all JJ tubes biased to its sweet spot, and it also has a Fender Hot Rod Mod for the overdrive channel from Granger Amps. The overdrive is the weakest part of the amp. With these mods, the overdrive is now very good. It will never sound like a Marshall but if you place a tube screamer in front of the overdrive channel, you will get very close. It will also tighten the overdrive channel. My sound comes from an MXR Distortion + and a Tube Screamer with a noise gate in front of the amp using the clean channel. Add delay and chorus in the effects loop with the built in reverb, I am now in the brown sound territory. My rhythms are thick and chunky and the leads are singing with a lot of bite. There is no harshness what so ever. I have other amps but I always keep coming back to this amp. It is plenty loud and it is very versatile.

Comments about Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp delivers on the mythical "sparkly clean" Fender Tones. The spring reverb is awesome. The distortion is okay, it does well for rock, blues, and lead tones. This is not a great sounding amp for metal. Unless you get the right pedal, it might sound good then.

Comments about Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

What makes this amp so great is that it works for all of us - with all of these amps they are component heavy devices that are built by people so some of us get lucky and some end up with a lemon... that's what happens when you have a popular amp ...

The HRDs real greatness is that it works for all of us regardless if we are playing 3 to 30 years, know what sounds good but may not be sound geeks and don't know our way around the insides of an amp - as well as for those who will use the HRD as a platform to mod it up to boutique status. This amp never has to apologize and no matter what others are playing with I never feel like a second class citizen with my HRD III totally stock.

Only slight issue as stock is that the volume jumps from nothing to everything, so as a home practice amp you cannot really use it comfortably with all that power jumping right out unless your home has vaulted ceilings.

Fortunately there is an easy inexpensive solution which is to simply swap the stock pre amp tube on the left for a GT-12AT7 ( stock is a 12AX7 ) this cuts the power down and evens out the volume increase on the low end ... I will be doing this in the near future and even a total non geek like me can perform this minor mod ... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/search?Ns=r&Ntt=12at7

There seems to be no end to the improvements that can be made to the HRD but even left stock as I have had it for the last number of years it is an awesome sounding amp. She may not do any one tone great but does every tone really really well and as such it is for me one of the more versatile tube amps …

Unless you are a tonal freak and a rig master you will love this amp and that is whom this amp is made for, the 99% of us who just want a great sounding tube tone for blues and rock that we can use at home, in the garage and at the occasional gig we jam at.

If your reading this and you have not yet tried it go to your local music shop and try the amp ... you will like it.

Next to my Twin Reverb, this sounds similar, and lighter. Loud enough to gig with and takes overdrive pedals well. Turn it into a Marshall with the right overdrive. Play country with the right overdrive, or just crank it and play the blues.

Purchased a HRD III from Nashua NH after looking at a lot of combo tube amps Amp has plenty of power and clean and overdrive options. The footswitch did not work out of the box, but they replaced it with no issues. In general very happy with the amp, but still breaking it in. The skin on the back panel was a pulling away where it wraps around the cut outs so I had to adhere it back on. Overall, very happy.
