This review is not necessarily a knock on the amp itself, I'd just like to share my experience with this product because it might be a common occurrence. I bought this amp at the store in Jacksonville and had i known anything about tube amps at the time, i would have realized that they sold me a broken amp. It wasnt until 3 or 4 months later that I finally took it into the shop to see why it was whistling and why I couldnt get a clean tone. First of all the warranty is bull. They told me at the store it covers the tubes, and knowing that I would eventually have to replace the tubes, I thought it would be a good deal. Long story short it didnt cover the tubes and my amp was in the shop for a month while we convinced fender that a 5 month old amp should not have blown tubes. What the repairman also told me is that someone had messed with the amp however there was no record of repair. What this meant was that guitar center probly knew there was something wrong with it, tried to fix it, then sold it to me. After a month, I finally got it back and with new tubes it sounds great. I still can't figure out if I like the amp. For starters, its annoyingly heavy. I'm a college student and my apartment is on the second floor of our building. Lugging this thing down the stairs, into my car, then into the jam room is such a hassle and i feel like i might be doing damage to the inside. Then, once you turn it on, it's the loudest thing you'll ever hear in your house. Plus you have to turn it loud enough to really appreciate the tone. The tone on the clean channel is sick. Playing the blues on it makes me sound like a way better guitar player than I actually am. I'm still working on finding the exact settings I like and what channel to use but there is a lot of versitility in this amp, event without a lot of knobs. If i had to do it over again, I would probably not buy this amp and I would never and will never buy anything from guitar center again. Everyone who's been there knows the people working there are idiots who only help older men looking at the most expensive guitars or just sit around and play the intsruments at the loudest volume possible. I think I would buy a less expensive solid state that is easier to move and can be played at quieter volumes. Even though I love having it, I just don't need this amp yet and the hassle really hasnt been worth it.
Me- own three fender amps-bassman 59, deluxe reverb, Newer G-Dec. I plugged into this amp today without any care. I just wanted to play this Telecaster I've been fancying in a nice amp. Plugged in and went Wow! I thought maybe it's just the guitar(priced about 1600 so really nice electronics). So I grabbed an epiphone lp(about half a grand) with soap bars and once again WOW! Alright ultimate test fender squire.....once again Wow. The squire sounded 10 times better. I played in middle position and it sounded incredibly close to Clapton soloing sound of today(though I could still I was playing a squire-haha). Tried a few more guitars like hollow, and semi hollow body guitars, an explorer..... Really bright distinct distortion on all. Please try this amp out.
This amp is built like a tank, heavy as heck too. Ok, so first the cons- stock speakers suck. I replaced mine with a pair of Weber California's and the difference is night and day for a guy like me who plays 100% clean. Next, Fender biased the tubes WAY too cold, this is because the stock Groove Tubes are under a year warranty(if you buy new) and this is Fenders way of covering their butts. That said, I rebiased my tubes to give me more clean headroom and again, the difference is night and day.I am thinking about ordering the clean headroom tube kit off eurotubes, which pretty much makes this amp "twinified" so if anyone out there has experimented with this package Once this amp is rebiased it becomes much more usable and with the speaker upgrade this amp sings! Reverb is not to my liking, sounds much too springy for me, so I use a pedal for my reverb. The same eq on all three channels is not a problem for me personally, but players who prefer more overdrive/distortion might not dig it too much. I have owned this amp for a year now and it has never failed me at any gig. I would recommend this amp to any guitarist looking for that tube sound and willing to make a few minor adjustments to get a real sweet sounding amplifier.
Here's the thing about this amp....IT'S LOUD!!! I bought this amp just a few years after I started playing and didn't know that much about sizes or wattage and I saw it in the store and just thought, "it's big and it's pretty and will be mine." In all honesty though, I need to start looking at downsizing. I love the amp and the sounds that I get from it (mostly only using the clean channel and pushing it to get that warm tube sound that we all want and then use pedals for my gain and what have you), but in all honesty, for practical purposes it's too loud. It's a great amp if you're looking for something with a LOT of headroom and a great tone, but unless you're playing some very large, unmiced gigs, you should probably go with the 212 or something a little smaller in general.
I have had this amp for over 6 mos now and stay amazed at the totality of it's abilities. Blues, jazz, rock, metal, chicken pickin, it doesn't know the meaning of "No". I had a solid state amp for over 27 years, and knew how to squueze the tones out I needed and used effects like a Ibanez Tube screamer and Dunlop Wah to get those extra drive needs to sound more bluesy. I've dropped the tube creamer, and the Wah has a totally different imapct now being driven through the Hot Rod. The 4 10" speakers give it a wide range of sounds, and fill a room with a good rich tmber when not driving the amp to its full potential. Jazz playing sounds rich and deep, particulally if you finger pick, aall.nd it is quite versatile when switching between channels. From Dig Dale like virbrato to Larry Carlton wailing, it can do it I looked at Marshalls, Vox, and Mesa, and kept coming back to this amp. You can't go wrong, and it is easy on the purse strings, and come with everything you need to get playiin. You could spend alot more on an amp, but I'm not sure what your paying for other than a name, and maybe a little more tweakability. I do have to laugh when I look at the knobs. They were designed for Nigel Tufnell, they go up to "12". Great amp, great price. Now shut up and play your guitar!
I have been playing for many, many years... like when this amp was FIRST produced and the Fender Bassman was THE BOSS. So, I have seen a lot of very good and even great amps come and go. Personally, I believe when it comes to generating that sound which we call "THE BLUES" I don't think that any Amp can produce the harmonics and overtones which a hard driven Tube Amp is capable of. Of course, much, much more goes into that blues sound some spend a life time in search of. Strings (oh, how these are so unbelievably overlooked), guitar, pickups, speakers, cabinet design and even being able to adjust all of these factors for the seemingly unlimited number of enviornments that we play in. A Musician has to start some where in putting his/her unique sound together. If you are starting with the amp there is NO BETTER PLACE TO START THAN WITH THE BLUES DEVILLE, 4X10, 60 watt Fender Combo. In my opinion, for the Blues, this is the MASTER PIECE OF ALL OF THE FENDER AMPS, barre none. And other manufactures don't even come close to being capable of producing that unique tone which only the 4X10 BLUES DEVILLE can. In the hands of a good Bluesman this amp will keep every eye in the house full of tears. I bought my first one in 1994 and second one in 2006. The BLUES DEVILLE not only is a Master at producing tone, but is a rough and tough amp too. How many times has mine been "tossed" from the tailgate to the back window of my pick-up truck with an 8' bed. Or the typical "bar patron" who after his starter 6 pack wants to look at the amp only to knock it off the back of the stage. Fender, you build a TANK! When it comes to the range of adjustments this is what separates this amp from the rest. The only addition that I have ever used on my BLUES are the Boss BD-2 pedal (to help with a little extra sustain) and the Line 6 Delay Pedal. Other than that on the front end just plug in and play on. One modification that I do use in smaller venues is a THD Hotplate attenuator (Brake). This way, even before the house fills up with bodies you can take the Drive Volume, turn it up as far as you care to then put the Master Volume on about 9. The same volume adjustments can be done with your guitar. BUT THE SOME IS ABSOLUTELY AND UNMISTAKABLY FENDER AT IT'S BEST! The bang for your buck is just about as good as it gets. This amp is easily carried by even the smallest person. It's looks great, it's tough, it sounds better than the competition and best of all it's a FENDER!
i do not actually own this amp, but i play with a guy that has one, and it is the envy of the entire band. it will always work for you and never fail. its espicially great for 50's and 60's music. it is an all around great amp, and i hope to own one someday.
