playing guitar for years left a desire to try something new. not wanting to risk big bucks on an experiment, this pack was just right. it plays well enough to allow me to learn and inspire me to do more and be better. i am currently looking at picking up a higher end model to continue growing as a mando player. i'd would say this is a good start though. the instument is fine but nothing special. the bag is handy. the tuner...is a tuner. the strap is kind of lame; just a nylon thing with fender written all over it. the book isnt the best. plan on spending some $ on books, cds, dvds or lessons. it did the trick for me though. i would recommend it for others who have played stringed instruments and want to check out the mando world without breaking the bank. btw - this is a lot easier to pack at festivals, camping, in the car etc than a guitar. it is usually what goes with me now.

I purchased this instrument on a limited budget. It comes with a tuner, gig bag, strap and an instruction booklet. The bridge and string alignment is terrible, strings are set too far apart and the bridge is set back too far. It wouldn't be cost efficient to have it professionally tuned. Vibrations are unerving, especially on the G string. Somewhat frustrating to play unless you are extremly careful with finger placement. I can now play proficiently, but I have quickly outgrown this instrument. It's an inexpensive way to find out if you will enjoy playing a mandolin, except for when you do realize you enjoy it and have to purchase another.

Solid mandolin, happy

About Me Experienced

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I've played guitar for years and got one of these. I'm very happy with my purchase(bought used). I have played with some cheap mandolins and the intonation can be horrible and the tuning pegs can be useless. This one stays in tune very well and the intonation is excellent. When you consider how small the necks are this and the prices that's not a guarantee. Plus it says "fender"! as opposed to some name you never heard off. Fun to play

A Toy

By wild hawk

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I'll start by saying I'm a long time guitar player and heavy endorser of good quality inexpensive gear. A little QA and overall thought cost companies next to nothing overseas and can produce a product that is very good in the right hands. Unfortunately this Fender mandolin is everything that can be wrong is. What's in the pack. Start with a nice Fender guitar strap. It would look great on a guitar. Mandolin players don't use guitar straps. Fail. The tuner is nice but you better have a very snall eyeglass repair type screwdrive around to access the battery. The instruction book is horrible. Want to quickly look up C, G, and D chord shapes? You won't find them on one page. Even my wife a non musician couldn't help but notice the poor layout of the book. Finally the mandolin itself. I'm no mando expert but one look at the horrible nut, rough edges around the f holes, awful tuners etc... indicated this was a instrument that simply is not be worthy of a beginner instrument. Even the bridge at it's lowest setting left the action lacking. It's products like this that stop many aspiring musicians early in their journey. I rarely knock gear hard but this one deserves it.

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

Evidence of wear that would indicate item was returned or used as a demo. Although the pick-guard had a clear protective plastic cover over it, the guard surface had multiple swirls and scratches. In addition, the guard had very loose hardware.
I'm very disappointed and less likely to purchase more instruments from Musician's Friend!

ok for the price

By Michael Plourde

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

The buzzing tailpiece was easy to fix once the source was found. The high action makes this mandolin not really suitable for performing for a full set or more if you perform professionally.
An ok mandolin if you want to try the instrament out before committing to an expensive one.
I got this for christmas from my thoughtful wife and I'm grateful. I play guitar and bass, performing occassionally and i always wanted to try mandolin so My wife got me this kit. The mandolin took some time to tune but seems to be holding it ok after a couple days. It had an awful buzzing but I have traced it to the tailpiece. I stuffed small pieces of felt in between the tailpiece and the G and D strings to solve that and now it's good. The action on this mandolin is too high to allow me to play this thing for more than a few songs during a performance of 3 or 4 sets. It's a decent starter mandolin and I'm happy to have it. It's pretty and has quite a bit of projection for a small instrament.
I would recommend this model for a starter. I may move up soon to a model easier to play as this one hurts. The book that came with this kit sucks. 60 pages and not one chord chart. Nice job Hal Leonard. Why sure I'd love to read 'The Black Nag' and 'Pop Goes The Weasel'. Oh wait, I don't play to kindergardeners. Here'a hint: show us how to play 'Losing My Religion'. It's 4 chords Hal/Fender. Also the Fender tuner that comes with the kit deserved to be stomped on in the driveway. At least the travel bag and strap are helpful.
It sounds good, but the action is quite high on mine. Probably to be expected though in this price range.
I'm no expert- I'm very familiar with guitars so keep that in mind. This seems decent as far as value in this price range.

2 Years and going

By mdshec

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I got this for Christmas 2 years ago now. I picked it up and played it for a while then put it back down and then about 8 months ago I picked it back up and have stopped.Initial quality - bridge was broken and it cost another $75 to get fixed and reset.Sound - Not bad with the Fender strings. Outstanding with D'Addario J75 Strings.Playability - Have only picked on 2 different brands. A Rogue and this Fender. I would tell you that there is a definite between the 2 and I would spend the extra money on the Fender.Materials - If I knew more about instruments when I got this one, I probably would have gotten a Washburn. At least they are made of all solid woods and have the same brand name reputation as a Fender. The Book - My book did not come with a CD. So trying to teach myself without it was rather difficult. Spend the money and get the same book with the CD. It helps out tremendously knowing what the song is supposed to sound like since most songs in the book are of Bluegrass - Celtic origin. All in all I have been really happy with the Fender FM100. As a first time player of any stringed instrument, you can't go wrong with the Fender name or sound quality.

ust have been in the warehouse for a while

By Steve

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

This was my first mandolin and second instrument of any kind. I knew I had my work cut out for me. You can imagine my dismay when I opened the box and found the strings to be old and rusty. I know an organization like Fender would not dream of putting old strings on a new instrument so I guess that the set must have been lying around for a while. Maybe you can rotate you inventory a little better

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I got this mandolin for Christmas and and it kind of sat around my room for the past few months but the in the past week I've been playing it more. I was looking at the mandolin and noticed that the bridge was bending and then finally just came off. But I'm going to try and fix it. But besides that it sounds nice and plays nice.

Great!

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I speak in agreement with the other reviewers of this product. It's inexpensive, stays in tune, sounds great, and comes with all the right accessories. I bought this mandolin because I wanted an alternative to guitar (my primary instrument). I was impressed. The FM100 turned out to be 10 times better than I ever could have hoped.
