The fender FB-54 banjo looks great, your friends will be amazed (and a little confused) when they see you playing this bad boy. Its got a nice, sharp tone with plenty of pluck. I played this and the deering goodtime 2, and while the deering was a little more comfortable to play, the deering loses some definate points in the aesthetics department. It would be hard for me to choose between this and the goodtime 2 if or when I decide to purchase one.

I had the FB 54 for 2 days before returning it and paying the extra $ for the Gold Tone. This banjo will be a disappointment if you buy it and see a Gold Tone CC100R later and compare them. The Fender sounds like one I could have made from a pie pan, a stick, and two guitar strings. The Fender has no tone ring and the rim is made of aluminum making it sound like a tin can with strings, the inlays are nice, but what are looks compared to sound and construction. The Gold Tone does have a tone ring, a wood rim, and also has nice snow flake like inlays. Save a few extra bucks and get better quality, sound, and construction for the price.

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

First lesson and this banjo sounded great. Great for a first timer who wants to practice or for performing. Very impressed with sound quality and solid manufacturing of instrument. I popped 3 strings as soon as I got it bc I am new to the banjo. Decided to have it professionally strung and tuned... Worth the money!

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

I bought this Banjo to learn on at the request of my wife (And if she's giving the go ahead to buy a new instrument, I'm buying). I was very pleased when it arrived, it looks gorgeous and has a great tone to it. Of course, I'm a guitar player looking to learn something new and it serves my needs very well. If you're an experienced banjo player it might not be your first choice, but it would seem that it would make a great backup or practice banjo. I purchased this as a "Stupid Deal of the Day" and for 150 it was definitely a steal. Fender quality instrument. Surprised to see it was made in China. It does require you to mount the bridge and do a set up, but if you're like me and willing to give it a shot, there are a ton of good instructions on line and on Google. If not, I don't see it being to expensive to take it to your local shop for the setup.

This Is Still My Favorite Resonator Banjo.

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

After five years of trying to buy one I finally got it and it's still my favorite resonator banjo! This one is louder than my open back banjo and is somewhat easier to change the strings on too. I really like the floral design for the inlays instead of the basic standard dots. And so far since I've had it I've only had to tune it up like once or twice and after that I haven't had many tuning problems. But if you're holding this banjo for a while it's physically heavier than an open back banjo. Overall the neck has stayed straight and hasn't needed an adjustment yet. And the frets aren't sharp at all either. Yeah, it's been great to have this banjo back again.

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

Good Quality, I have only played the same banjo that I received for my 15th B-Day OVER 30 YEARS AGO I learned/Taught myself the instrument inside and out. Therefore I can only compare it to that one. A HONDO II This one seems a bit dull in tone. But it's very well made and the neck is dressed well. It has a geared 5th string and if you change to a light gauge string you can really turn up some ears. Everyone I play for says "WOW I'VE NEVER HEARD THE BANJO PLAYED LIKE THAT IN PERSON" Lean to Pick my friend!!!

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

Got this banjo for a ridiculous price on stupid deal. Has nice tone and good projection. Well made and nice looking. Got the musicians gear hardcase to go with it and I'm pleased with it also. At this price, anyone who has ever considered learning to play has little to lose, and they will get a quality instrument that will probably be the only instrument they need unless they are going to gig with it.

              Total Garbage

              By Tim Spivey

              from Richmond, VA

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

I ordered this banjo online, expecting a quality product from Fender, but when it came - it was total garbage. It is made with very cheap materials obviously by people who don't know what a banjo is or what it should sound like. It was not set up properly at all and hindered my learning of this instrument. I should have spent the extra $50 and bought a Goodtime banjo.

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

I'm an experienced guitarist (30 years playing) who just started playing banjo a little over a year ago, so I don't claim to know much about banjos. The FB-54 was the model I chose to learn on, because it had a nice sound compared to some other inexpensive models I tried, AND the price was right. It was a banjo I could afford, without ending up with a toy. Now that a year has passed by, I must say the FB-54 was an excellent purchase. I have no regrets. I've been playing it consistently since I purchased it, and it still sounds great, feels great (the neck is comfortable), stays in tune, and I have had no problems with it whatsoever, hardware or otherwise. I installed railroad spikes on mine (which wasn't very difficult), allowing me to play it in any key. It's been a great instrument. I can't see myself ever parting with it.
