Overview

Fender's EXP-1 Expression Pedal is a dynamic new dual-mode digital pedal that controls the volume or amp/effect parameters on Mustang III, IV and V amplifiers and on the new Mustang Floor multi-effects unit. Switch between "volume" and "expression" modes by stepping on the toe end of the pedal. Red and green LEDs indicate the mode in use.

In "volume" mode, indicated by illumination of the green LED, EXP-1 controls the master volume or can be turned off. In "expression" mode, indicated by illumination of the red LED, the EXP-1 controls most Mustang amp and effects parameters. Common among these, for example, are the frequency parameters of a wah effect and the rate/time parameters of modulation and delay effects.

The EXP-1 pedal puts great tonal control at your feet and provides a great way to make your Mustang amp or multi-effects unit even more fun, more expressive and more versatile.

If you already bought a Fender Mustang III, IV, or V, then you might as well buy this pedal. Sure the price for this one pedal is like a third or a fifth the price of the actual amp, that probably says more about how inexpensive the amp is than how expensive this pedal is. It takes some effort to get he pedal set up (minimal effort), but once you do, it has some pretty cool functions. Obviously volume is handy, but it doesn't end there. You can control the on-board wah effect, which is a necessity if you want to use that effect. But the cool thing is you can preset this pedal to control ANY effect. For example, you can turn the gain up and down, add or remove reverb, really anything. So it adds even more customization to your rig. I wouldn't say this is a necessity, but if you want to make the most of what the mustang has to offer, then you should get this pedal. You can also use the other footswitches with this pedal, so it's not like you have to choose one or the other. So you can have the 2 and 4 button plus the expression pedal. Fairly solid construction overall and you can dial in the useable range of motion if you're into that sort of thing.

Terrible pedal. First, it can only be used with a Mustang amp. Pretty much every company on earth had no problem allowing a regular ole expression pedal to be used, but not Fender! Nope, using an Apple-esque money grab, they make it so that this pedal and this pedal only can be used. So, you spend ninety bones that you'll never be able to use for any other purpose ever. And if you already have an expression pedal or two? Tough luck.

Now, all of that ticks me off as is, but what REALLY grinds my gears is that this piece of unversatile junk is noisy. How can that be, you ask? Every time you use it, it introduces a digital crackly noise. No, it's not a dirty pot as this pedal doesn't use potentiometers. Rather, it's a bad design. It uses some IR sensor that picks up noise when the values changes. Think about adding a single coil pickup to your chain, and removing the shielding every time you touch the expression pedal. Yea, sucks. It's not a defect as the same issue has existed with 2 different pedals with multiple Mustang amps in multiple buildings with multiple cables, etc. It's just a hunk of junk, end of story. And on top of that, every now and then the red/green led fritzes out and you have to turn the amp off and on to get it to light up. Never again will I buy any Fender modeling product because of things like this.

Comments about Fender EXP-1 Expression Pedal:

I went through 2 of these, both ordered new through Guitar Center. The first one was too easily engaged and would sometimes not power up if it were connected to the amp when I powered on the amp. The second one, again too easily engaged, after a few weeks I ran into the same problem where it didn't power on occasionally. Now I'm using a Digitech RP-500 in front for Volume and wah. The EXP-1 was a PITA, the switches on the 2 I received were never right, if you were using it for wah it was disengage back to volume no matter how light your touch is. Fender Mustangs are great amps but honestly the 2/4 button footswitch setup sucks. The Sanpera is a great controller for the Vypyrs... if fender would come out with something like that for the Mustangs it would be great. In fact the Mustang Floor layout would be great but design one as just a controller for the mustang,

Comments about Fender EXP-1 Expression Pedal:

This pedal works out of the box as a volume pedal for your Mustang IV v2 but if you get into the Fender Fuse sound editor you can use it to control parameters for your patches. I haven't done that yet though. For a volume pedal it works fine, but it is expensive.

Comments about Fender EXP-1 Expression Pedal:

Works as advertised - really allows you to get everything out of the mustang (in my case) III. I use mine in conjunction with the two and four button switches to eliminate the need for a pedal board. Follow the calibration protocol and it is fully functional.

Switch is just too easily engaged. Probably would have gotten a 5 but I shouldn't have to fix something I just bought.

Comments about Fender EXP-1 Expression Pedal:

One star knocked off for set up.Instructions for setting up the expression pedal are not clear. Holding the util button on power up for calibration did not work on my Mustang IV V2 per the Mustang manual instructions.

You need to use the Fuse software, and to read the manual (pages 12-13) to set it up correctly. The wah and volume pedal sound good and work quite well when set up.

The pedal is sturdy, made of metal and has a good feel to it, the toe switch doesn't require you to press real hard to switch modes. I like having the dual function ability of switching between volume and effect.

Again, to get good functionality, read the manual. Setting the pedal up for the different effects is not intuitive and needs to be done for each preset.

It lets you control just about any parameter from any effect, wah, volume but also amp gain, tremolo speed...
Had to look online to find calibration and use instructions. Muxh easier to set up if uou use the Fuse software. Works well but will not work with any other product and is pricey compared to the cost of the amp.

As a volume pedal it works great! It has a guitar tuner but I haven't figured out how to get it to work! It supposedly Wah's but haven't figured that out either. Too early yet to say it was a bad buy. I believe it's the user not understanding it's full functionality. Definitely a learning curve ahead of me.

This is a nice pedal and works as expected. However, this pedal is ONLY for use with the Mustang™ III, IV, and V amps. I guess Fender is trying to keep the cost down on the amps. But, the pedal is a bit pricey considering it is exclusively to the Mustang.
