Overview

A modernized version of a student-turned-classic instrument originally released in 1956, the Duo-Sonic HS model’s compact form belies its giant-sized sound. It’s the ideal companion for adventurous players who aren’t afraid to buck the norm and shatter expectations.

The Duo-Sonic HS new pickups let the true voice of the instrument shine. The single-coil Duo-Sonic neck pickup is joined by a vintage-spec humbucking bridge pickup for flexible tone that can match any playing style imaginable. The push/pull tone pot switches to single coil operation on the humbucking bridge pickup, unlocking a variety of tones that can be shaped via the master volume and tone controls to find just the right sound.

The 24 in. scale adds a bit of warmth and thickness to the guitar’s inherent tone, while granting a slinkier playing feel, making it easier to perform multi-step bends. Topped by a 9.5 in.-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets, the “C”-shaped maple neck is comfortable for all playing styles and ideal for players with smaller hands, or those who use extended chord forms. The six-saddle string-through-body hardtail Strat bridge increases sustain while the bent steel saddles add some zing to your tone, enhancing the upper harmonics to cut through a dense mix.

The smaller body is ideal for smaller players or for energetic stage performances. A gloss polyester finish protects the body while the neck bears a satin polyurethane finish for fast, easy playability. The aesthetic appointments, including the knurled flat-top control knobs, cast/sealed tuning machines and a three-ply Mint Green pickguard, add a touch of classic Fender style to this updated and modernized design. A new take on a classic guitar that’s flown under most player’s radars, the Duo-Sonic HS is ready and rarin’ to go with surprisingly giant sound. Case sold separately.

Comments about Fender Duo Sonic HS Pau Ferro Fingerboard:

When I bought mine 2 months ago it was still advertised as being a rosewood fingerboard. I would not mind the Pau Ferro had I known that is what I was buying. Pau Ferro, also known as Ironwood, is an extremely hard wood, and has a different feel than rosewood. I also feel it is one of the contributing factors to the sharp attack, that gives this guitar a bright percussive tone. Other factors would include the string through body, bolt on neck, bent steel saddles, wood choice, and of course the pickups, but I feel the Pau Ferro is in the equation. This was an impulse purchase, and #8 in my collection of guitars. I wanted it for the shorter neck scale, so it would easier on my ageing hands. The first one came straight from the factory box, and the action was cranked up almost 1/8 inch off the fret board. After adjusting the neck, and lowering the action to a reasonable level, it completely fretted out around the 12-15 fret area. I checked it, and it had three extremely high frets. I expected more from Fender even if this is in their lower range. I exchanged it for one hanging on the wall at another store, this one checks out fine, but has some ugly markings in the wood on the neck. Whatever, I'd rather a player. For me playability is hit and miss. The neck is chunky, which I prefer because I have long fingers. I've never had a guitar with a 7.5" radius on the fret board, I actually prefer a flatter 12" radius, but I can get use to this. The short neck scale however is very nice. Much easier on my hand, and I can do some fun bendy stuff. When I plug in to my Fender HR Deluxe amp however, that's when I fall in love with this guitar. Something other reviews always seem to gloss over is the tone knob is a push/pull pot to tap the humbucker. While most humbuckers are rather lack luster tapped, this one is oozing with Genuine Fender tone! As a humbucker it is powerful, with a lot of cut, great for punk, or old school metal. I do wish the neck pickup was a little hotter.
