Overview

The Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass has a Jazz neck, a P Bass body, and a P/J combination pickup array with Vintage Noiseless pickups and active electronics. The P body is a little smaller and lighter, the J neck slimmer and faster, and the combined pickups give you just that much more to play with. A gold vinyl pickguard sets the Deluxe P Bass apart visually, and its satin-finish neck feels worn in from the get-go.

Includes a gig bag.

I've had this base for about a month now, and I hardly ever pick up any of my other 6 basses any more. If I'm at work, I'll use my acoustic resonator for practice, but now, I'm even plugging in at work with my little headphone amplifier, because this bass is just so comfortable. The neck and action have such a great feel, that the bass becomes an extension of my body, instead of a tool in my hands. The contoured body allows more comfortable showmanship, and it is even more comfrortable to play while sitting, as well as standing. The electronics give you a wide range of sounds, from smooth to growl to popping. I think it's a great looking guitar, and if you're ready to step up from the beginner basses, you can't go wrong with this one. I think I'm finally ready to start selling some of my other basses. Thank you Fender for a great instrument at a bargain price.

This is a nice looking and sounding bass after the set up and new nut. 1 stars is for Fender's Quality Control. I had to order this on line because the color I wanted was not in the local GC. When it arrived, The top 2 strings hit the fretboard when played. One of the strings was also wound in the wrong directon. I notice on the QC card that the sign off for Tune/Test was missing. How did this make it out of the factory? I know this is MIM but I expect more out of Fender. I knew I would need to set this up when I got it. How can a bass, with a string wound in the wrong direction, needing a new nut, leave the factory without being tested for playability?

what?

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I don't know how Fender manages to fit so much tone into this little monster. But they did and its incredible!! Round large lows with balanced mids and highs, mmmmm. Fender basses are about the only things I play (except my Ibanez acoustic) and this one I can't WAIT to get my hands on! The one guy who said Fender basses either have fat necks or thin tone. Well, I agree on the necks, but both P Bass and J basses get excellent tone. This one i must agree though, is the pinnacle of Bass society. AND FOR A MODEST PRICE! Buy it NOW!

OMG, OMG

By Dr. Michael S.Reed

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I was a professional musician (keyboards) for many years but always wanted to play the bass. I finally decided to buy a Fender bass. After thoroughly researching the pros and cons of precision vs. jazz bass, I found the Active Precision Deluxe Special. OMG, the best of both with active electronics to boot. The slim jazz neck and the smaller, lighter precision body is just the combination I was looking for. Good job Fender!

A good playing, awesome sounding bass

By umm? call me ishmael

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I just got this for my B-day and before, i had a cheap yamaha rbx170 beginner bass, but i stepped up to this, and its a world of difference. the fender is so much more precise and easy to play, and it sounds so much better. the active electronics provide such deep sound that has so much growl. it is excellent for slapping and pooping, as well as picking and everything in between. i got it in black and it looks sweet.

Studio Drummer Becomes a Bassist

By Simply Gurn

from Topeka, KS

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I've played drums for over 30 years and have only tinkered with bass, choosing to program bass parts in my studio instead. I recently picked this bass from among several other brands (Ibenez, Washburn, ESP, Music Man) because it has a very EVEN sound across the strings (this is due to the active pups I'm sure because the Geddy Jazz was dead by comparison!) I absolutely love the Balance knob that lets me blend the pickups and the Mid Boost gives me that extra little growl when using the Jazz pup. Having said all that, I don't play this thing without my SansAmp BassDriver DI. Whoa! You want the Earth to move when you play? Get these two together...they even make a crummy old Peavey 15" combo sound good!!

Great Bass for the price!

By Guitarpickingirl

from Colon, MI

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I recently purchased this bass from Guitar Center. I had to wait for it since the Chrome Red with Maple fretboard was out of stock in the store and online. But, I will say that it was worth the wait. Not only is this bass visually stunning but it plays great. The concept of combining the P bass and the Jazz bass was brilliant. You get the great neck of the Jazz bass which is great to play but also the P bass body. The combination pickups also provide great tonal range. Eventually I will buy a hardshell case but the deluxe gig bag is nicer than your average bag with 3 pockets and a little extra padding. My bass arrived very well protected in the package and everything was in order when it came out of the box. I know others have said that theirs had some quality control issues and that may be but I didn't have any problems. Overall I think this is a great guitar for the price especially if you want the look and feel of a higher end instrument without the extra $$$.

Your paying for pure substance, not a name.

By Dave Rattlehead

from San Antonio, TX

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

Being fond of bands like Black Sabbath, Ozzy, and Metallica, my jazz bass always played incredibly well. As I started playing Megadeth, I started to need more speed and aggression, which caused me to change to picking style (I still use fingers often), but my jazz bass soon had trouble keeping the dark aggression of bassists like Dave Ellefson (Megadeth). I've played basses from all companies, and found that despite my fondness of fender, none of the basses from them that played and sounded good enough for my new style until I played this bass. I picked it up, and it was like an addiction. It has an awesome p bass pickup that on its own is nice and growly for metal and such, and can be enchanced by the onboard eq. If you use the jazz pickup, you can get close to a jazz bass sound, or help manipulate your p bass pickup. The versatility of the p bass body and comfort of the J bass neck are an incredible combination, and the bass looks amazing in person. (Online pictures do it no justice.) Now all I need to do is buy a maple neck black one and add some personal touches. You pay for everything in this bass, every penny is spent on hardware rather than the brand name.

Awsome bass

By electbassman1

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I have had many other basses in the past but this one has surpassed my expectations. I was just browsing around the music store when I found a blizzard pearl color Fender deluxe p bass. Immiediantly I knew I had to buy it after playing it. This bass sounds so good for popping/slapping but carries itself well in all aspects of music.

great p-deluxe

By e-a-d-g dude

from central valley, CA

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I've had this bass for about 4 months now and it is outstanding!! You'll probably have to dial it in for whatever it is you play, but it will adapt to just about everybody and whatever style you might be into! The j-bass type neck is smooth and fast (I have smaller hands) and plays superb from the get-go. With this bass and a standard precision, I'm not needing anything else and you probably won't either. BUY IT!
