Overview

The Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass has a Jazz neck, a P Bass body, and a P/J combination pickup array with Vintage Noiseless pickups and active electronics. The P body is a little smaller and lighter, the J neck slimmer and faster, and the combined pickups give you just that much more to play with. A gold vinyl pickguard sets the Deluxe P Bass apart visually, and its satin-finish neck feels worn in from the get-go.

Includes a gig bag.

Just received this bass and it was everything advertised. You cannot believe how great this bass sounds. I purchased the Blizzard Pearl color with the maple neck. It is very light and I never had to make any adjustments with the action. I am going to replace the bridge with a Leo Quann for increased 'sustain' though. What makes the playability even more enjoyable was the price. You will not regret this purchase.

This is a nice looking and sounding bass after the set up and new nut. 1 stars is for Fender's Quality Control. I had to order this on line because the color I wanted was not in the local GC. When it arrived, The top 2 strings hit the fretboard when played. One of the strings was also wound in the wrong directon. I notice on the QC card that the sign off for Tune/Test was missing. How did this make it out of the factory? I know this is MIM but I expect more out of Fender. I knew I would need to set this up when I got it. How can a bass, with a string wound in the wrong direction, needing a new nut, leave the factory without being tested for playability?

This is an awesome base guitar for the money. The active pickups are amazing. You really can get a wide variety of sounds out of this guitar. Full tonal range and extremely comfortable to play for extended periods of time. Had to adjust the neck a little bit with the supplied hex key and now the action is amazing.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I have had this bass for over two years now. I must say it is a very versatile instrument for what you pay. It has the mid range grit needed for rush and metallica, the soarig highs for iron maiden and mr big, booming lows for black sabbath and stevie wonder, and everything in between. This bass is very good for what you get. Battery hasn't died out on me yet and I use this bass whenever i'm not using my five string ibanez. all good things said, there are some minor things about this bass. first of all, right out of the box the p bass pickup was way too hot so i had to lower it with a screwdriver, which is easy to do. also you have to eq the j-bass pickup quite abit to make it sound good (the weird thing about this bass is that the instrument has a regular passive precision pickup and an active j bass pickup, which is weird in my opinion). also there's no passive switch, so i can't get any of the exact classic fender tones (you can get one installed for $50 tho). all in all it's great for a mexican bass and far better than most squiers. if only there was a passive setting it would sound lime a true fender

            First bass guitar

The active pickup comes with 1 Duracell Pro 9 volt battery installed and ready to go.

Looks - The blue metallic bass is really a very dark navy/black looking. This is visible when you see the bass in person rather than online, which I was perfectly happy with. The gold pick guard is fine with me. I think I read if you use a guitar pick a lot you risk scratching it. I don't anticipate using a pick so no issue there.

Sound - I play this bass with an AMPEG BA-110 40w in a home office and it sounds amazing.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

This was the best blemished bass I have ever seen, played, and purchased. I was going for the hot rod deluxe p bass, but I save with this great and beautiful instrument. The hot rod was black and that was boring to me as well. This active circuit is a plus and the PuP are great sounding. The neck fast and smooth, the sound tight and precise. the weight comfortable and the looks like eye candy.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

Been looking for a P/J to upgrade my Indonesian Squier Precision P/J which has awesome tone but soft weak tempermental maple neck. Very impressed with this Mexican P/J with active electronics -- not my 75P but as close as it gets. First axe I've bought in a very long time that didn't need extensive setup or adjustment straight out of the box. The neck is straight and hard solid maple and the frets are clean and polished. Action is set precisely to spec (with sufficient room for style adjustments without fret buzz) and the intonation is dead on all the way up. Black finish is deep and flawless. The gold pickguard is ugly and there doesn't appear to be many aftermarket alternatives for this particular model (4 controls, P pickguard but J neck). The neck Precision split pickup is a classic alnico and sounds awesome. The bridge jazz pickup is a "noiseless" and it appears someone took it a little too literally -- it has very weak flat output and you need to adjust the volume to compensate whenever you pan the pickups. Not sure what the "mid" pan is supposed to add tonewise and it appears to change the presence more than the tone. Still, a lot of flexibility and control for whatever tone you want. I have a G&L Tribute L2000 (Indonesia) with 18V electronics and the vintage P baseball bat neck, which is probably a very comparable model. The G&L has a more sensible controls and a heavier piece of maple for the neck but has required constant tweaking to eliminate fret buzz and playability issues (after 6 months it has aged out and is finally where it needs to be and stays there). Quality of the Fender as well as the tone is clearly superior to the G&L. I'll probably end up changing the strings to 9050ML stainless flats but that is for my playing style and no fault with the tone possibilities from the stock nickel roundwounds. Very nice Fender Bass with a capital F-- the real deal on a beer budget.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I got this Bass for Christmas in 2006, and I couldn't be happier with it. Good feel, excellent range of tones and sounds that don't limit you to one style of sound. Playing out of TC Electronic RH450 head with RS410 and RS210 cabs.

On the Bass, the knobs are in the right place for most playing styles, enabling quick modifications to your tone while in the middle of a song. I have never had a battery die out on me, and have only changed it once since I've owned the instrument.

I got the Black/Rosewood model. I know folks are crabbin about the gold pick-guard, but going against a black body, its fine! If that's the only complaint most folks have about it then that tells ya something!

It played very nice right out of the box (upgrading from a Squire P-Bass), though I did have a friend set the intonation for me since I was a rookie, buts been right ever since.

Using the RotoSound Swing 66 strings and have not had any issues with them rattling or buzzing.

Since I am not a guitar player playing bass, my main thing is holding the bottom and not wild solos or slapping (not that advanced), so the frets are holding up nicely and no scratch marks on the frets.

On the negative side the only thing I can think of is that it's a little heavy for me because I have spinal issues, but sitting or leaning on a stool help me with that issue.

The included gig bag is ok, and will hold up for awhile but I will probably be upgrading the gig bag real soon.

Bottom line is I have no desire for a new bass (other than maybe a Rickenbacker ;) ) and enjoying the purchase I made... No regrets! Get this Bass!!! You cannot go wrong for the money and versatility!

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

This instrument was put together correctly and I would like to mention that Fender Mexico actually did a better job regarding their final inspection than Fender USA did on my Fender Deluxe American J bass that came out of the box with a much loftier price tag and electronics that were supposed to be noiseless but were not.
I purchased the red girl and I have to say that I have no intention of making any changes to the stock issued parts and unlike many others I love the gold pick guard against the red finish.
They even rolled the fret edges off very nicely as compared to most all other basses at this excellent price point.
I have many basses and I really am very happy with this instrument and I have no regrets in purchasing this instrument and that this fret board will be fully explored in search of new patterns and inventions.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I've purchased this bass two years ago on the basis of nothing more than good reviews. After getting this bass, i did not regret it. first off it is solid as a rock. banged it up a few times and it still kicks butt despite the various scratches. You can get a huge variety of sounds from this wonderful bass. with the right strings (i prefer swing 77 rotosounds). role the bass off halfway and set the pickups selector in the middle, you get a geddy-leeish tone. set the eq almost flat and you can get a tone similar to billy sheehan with a slight lack of attack. The j-pickup sounds good soloed for jaco-esque stuff. for a good blues tone, role the PU selector halfway in between the middle position and p-bass position, and role off treble completely. For a more punkish sound role off the bass halfway with the p-pickup fully on. that's not even scratching the surface of tonal variaties possible. Only complaints i have is that it started buzzing a while ago so it needs to be fixed (no it's not fret buzz), and there's no active/passive switch (p-pickup sounds good, but not quite like a classic precision), but luckily im getting one installed for cheap (if you can't find a cheap way to get the switch installed if desired than get the reggie hamilton, the american imo is not worth the extra 1000). you will not find a better mexican bass in this price.
