Overview

The Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass has a Jazz neck, a P Bass body, and a P/J combination pickup array with Vintage Noiseless pickups and active electronics. The P body is a little smaller and lighter, the J neck slimmer and faster, and the combined pickups give you just that much more to play with. A gold vinyl pickguard sets the Deluxe P Bass apart visually, and its satin-finish neck feels worn in from the get-go.

Includes a gig bag.

Features
  • Jazz neck
  • P Bass body
  • Vintage Noiseless Pickups (J bridge pickup, P center pickup)
  • Active electronics

I've had this base for about a month now, and I hardly ever pick up any of my other 6 basses any more. If I'm at work, I'll use my acoustic resonator for practice, but now, I'm even plugging in at work with my little headphone amplifier, because this bass is just so comfortable. The neck and action have such a great feel, that the bass becomes an extension of my body, instead of a tool in my hands. The contoured body allows more comfortable showmanship, and it is even more comfrortable to play while sitting, as well as standing. The electronics give you a wide range of sounds, from smooth to growl to popping. I think it's a great looking guitar, and if you're ready to step up from the beginner basses, you can't go wrong with this one. I think I'm finally ready to start selling some of my other basses. Thank you Fender for a great instrument at a bargain price.

This is a nice looking and sounding bass after the set up and new nut. 1 stars is for Fender's Quality Control. I had to order this on line because the color I wanted was not in the local GC. When it arrived, The top 2 strings hit the fretboard when played. One of the strings was also wound in the wrong directon. I notice on the QC card that the sign off for Tune/Test was missing. How did this make it out of the factory? I know this is MIM but I expect more out of Fender. I knew I would need to set this up when I got it. How can a bass, with a string wound in the wrong direction, needing a new nut, leave the factory without being tested for playability?

WOW!!!! Great Bass Guitar

By Melissa

from Waterloo, Oregon

This bass is all around a great bass guitar. I did not have any problems with this bass. Plays beautifully!!! The Alnico slit coil pickup sounds awesome and yes the J pickup is a little weaker, but who cares, Alder body, thin J neck, Nice:) It's got a lot going for it, Active electronics give a great boost to this work horse. It's sad to hear about other people having a bad experience with this Fender. I guess that's life in the big city. Mine is the Blizzard Pearl with the gold pickguard, so sweet. GET THIS BASS!! It's worth every penny. Enjoy :)

Best bass in it's price range

By Matt

from Milwaukee

P bass body, Jazz Bass neck, P/J pickups, active electronics. It truly is an EVERYTHING bass. A best of both worlds, do anything instrument. I do wish the electronics were both active OR passive, in case you wind up with a dead battery. The only thing that seperates this bass from a high end, much more expensive USA Fender would be the active/passive electronics, string through body stringing, and a better beefier bridge. But, for the money this is just about the best bass you can get. Rock, Blues, Metal, Country, Funk, Slap... you can pretty much play anything on this bass.

Great bass not stage ready

By Roel

from Redding, Ca

I had been looking at this bass for a few months before ordering. I was impressed with all its features and really liked the light blue with gold. However, I was extremely disappointed at first because upon arrival, it was nowhere near stage ready. The truss rod needed to be adjusted and the action was too high as well..Strings were a little light as well. Lucky for me I had it shipped to guitar center where at first they wanted to charge me for the adjustments but later decided not to because of the cost of the bass. I ordered the navy blue with rosewood neck and Im thinking maybe they should change the photo since it looks so much lighter online than it really is. You think they would be more cautious about things like that. It should be ready to play and sound good if someone is gon drop nearly a grand on a bass. Ive only had it for about a month or so and Im still making adjustments but im slowly falling in love with this bass, great tone control and incredibly light weight. The playability is awesome too

A Bass to Last you a Lifetime

By Nathan Sprague

from Topsham Maine

I've had the bass for about a 8 months now, and it's definitely the best out of my collection. Got it on sale because of a minor chip off of the pick guard, what a steal! Love the action of the strings, they're nice a low, for great comfort, and no buzz. In person, you'll realize how thin the neck is toward the nut, and makes it very comfy to play with. I've had no problems with this bass so far, and I doubt I will be having any in the future. A solid 5, this bass will last you many, many years.

The Bass I will Never get rid of!!!

By Matthew Muklewicz

from Hopedale Ohio

I love this bass! I have the black with maple fret board and looks great. I did replace the bridge with a babicz bridge, the vintage bridge did not hold up to my heavy hands. I also put a hipshot D-tuner on it. I do have to say that the set up out of the box was horrible. Once this bass had a good set up and some roto sound strings, it was out of this world. The sounds you can get out of this bass are unreal, finger picking, using a pick, slap, it does it all. It plays like butter. The p pickup is hotter than the j, but they both sound great,, I thought I was going to upgrade the pickups when I ordered the bass, but once I heard this bass with the babicz bridge on it I was in love with the sound. I would put this bass up against any bass at any price. Now if only Fender would make this same bass in a 5 sting.

Blizzard Pearl

By Ralph Cherry

from New Orleans, LA

I got the Blizzard Pearl (rosewood fretboard) and it's great. If you look at the pics above, you will notice the difference in the color between the Blizzard Pearl with Rosewood and Maple fretboards. This is because the Blizzard Pearl color changes with the light. Sometimes it looks silvery, sometimes creamy white and in between. But more important, this bass SOUNDS awesome. Every single musician friend who's heard it is pleasantly blown away.

Better Bass

By Davin Stidger

from Sacramento, California

Have been playing bass since 1969; Have had a lot of different basses through the years. I have been using schecter the last couple of years because I was doing a lot of road work and didnt want to wind up loosing or damaging one of my better axes. I bought this to take the place of my Schecters and I am so far really pleased with the results. The bass came in great shape. The set up was not too good on the bass, but at the store I plugged in the Bass to make sure everything worked. Excellent tone range. I took it home and with a few adjustments and a new set of strings (100s) I was able to get this thing to play like slick butter. It is now my road instrument. I got the special p bass, maple fret board, Blizzard Pearl (the color is great and the pic does not do it justice), four string. I have had it just a short time and I have put about 40 hours of rehearsal and performance time so far. I am totally happy and now Im looking to a standard Jazz in the near future. Thanks Fender. If there is one thing I can say about the price is that its not too much, however Everyone is charging the same price. Its locked in and there is no Competition for us customers.

The next bass to own!!1

By T

from Houston, TX

After playing my Ibanez Sr300m for 2 years, I felt it was time to upgrade. I wanted an Ibanez Sr700 which would have suited me well, but I wanted a different sound and feel of a "different" bass guitar. After playing the Schecter's, Warwicks, and Epiphones, I was blown away by the feel of the fender P-Special Deluxe. The jazz neck is nice, fast and very comfortable. The P-bass body is big, but not too heavy. The finish is nice and simple, but gleams in the sun!! The p-pickups and j-pickups makes this bass mean. The two pickups allow for some really nice tones that are unmatched with other basses in this price range. The only other thing to mention is that once I removed the standard Fender bass strings and replaced the strings, I was in heaven. If you're looking to upgrade to a professional bass then this bass will provide you with some serious tone that won't allow you to put this bass down!

Great Bass for the price!

By Guitarpickingirl

from Colon, MI

I recently purchased this bass from Guitar Center. I had to wait for it since the Chrome Red with Maple fretboard was out of stock in the store and online. But, I will say that it was worth the wait. Not only is this bass visually stunning but it plays great. The concept of combining the P bass and the Jazz bass was brilliant. You get the great neck of the Jazz bass which is great to play but also the P bass body. The combination pickups also provide great tonal range. Eventually I will buy a hardshell case but the deluxe gig bag is nicer than your average bag with 3 pockets and a little extra padding. My bass arrived very well protected in the package and everything was in order when it came out of the box. I know others have said that theirs had some quality control issues and that may be but I didn't have any problems. Overall I think this is a great guitar for the price especially if you want the look and feel of a higher end instrument without the extra $$$.
