Made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughn that unique and beautiful tone comes to life when you plug a set of these in. The tones are beautiful and ring out giving your guitar that knarl and extra bite. I have a Mexican Strat with a set of these in it and other then the differences in the bridge i truly can not tell the difference between my foreign made strat and an american. They are also ideal for multi-styles of music such as rock, blues, country, and indie. I recomend that if you are a strat owner you invest in a set of these. They will take your playing to a whole other level.

Well, my experience with these pickups kind of echoes the previous reviews, but after some discussion with the Fender CS guys I hope I can provide some suggestions why these pickups are not exactly for the average player and avoid some disappointments.First, one of the 'secrets' of the SRV sound is that he plays very heavy strings, 0.013s, which perfectly accommodate his style, he is really flogging his guitar. I personally cannot play any strings that fat, just can't bend those cables. Consistent with his setup, the Tex specials have very strong magnets, and the staggering of the pole pieces is unusual (g highest), but perhaps perfect for SRV string setup. As we mortals tend to play thinner strings, 0.010s or such, the powerful magnets distort the strings' vibration pattern, and you get something that sounds like fret buzz, but it is not. Just play the 21st fret (no frets beyond so it can't be fret buzz) and it still buzzes. This is particularly obvious on the g string. The effect is close to what is otherwise known as 'stratitis'. The common cure for this ailment is to increase the pickup/string spacing, and to screw this pickups down until they are about even with the pickguard. That, of course, leaves you with a rather thin sound, that kinda resembles the SRV, but lacks the fat sound you were actually trying to achieve.Interestingly, using a SD Hotrail as the bridge and a Texas as middle, you can get a decent SRV like sound in the 1-2 position of the 5-pos standard switch. So I think for its intended purpose, the pickups are ok, but you need to think if you really are up to that original setup. See also the SRV setup data in the Erlwine book. If you have hands the size of a toilet seat cover and can pull a Texas pickup truck with your pinkie, get 0.013s and those pickups will work for you. Otherwise, think again.Cheers, BR

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Strat Pickups:

I got these pickups stock on my srv strat, and they're interesting pickups. Firstly I'd say these aren't ordinary strat pickups, they're kind of gritty and have a pronounced upper mid range attack. In 1 3 and 5 you'll find really work best with overdrive, and aren't great for clean sounds. 2 and 4 are the opposite, and are more glassy and smooth. The reason these pickups are difficult to use is because they require a bit of specificity when being approached, not only with pickup selection but how your amp is set will need to accommodate the pickups and sound you're going for.

That said, these do the srv sound exceptionally well, and really are best fit for playing in e flat, with bigger strings. If your looking for a more clean, swiss army knife strat pickups I'd look elsewhere. If you really dig srv and those type of tones, then I'd highly reccomend these.

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Strat Pickups:

I would have given them five stars, but I wanted you to read what I had to tell you. I replaced my Custom Shop Fat 50s with a set of Custom Shop 69s and Custom Shop Texas Specials in my MIA Sienna Sunburst Strat. Now for the caveat - I replaced the neck and bridge with the Custom Shop 69s, but used the center pickup from a Custom Shop Texas Special for the center pickup. The center pickup of the Texas Special is reverse wound; therefore, reduces the loud single coil hum you'd hear if using all 69s in all three positions. The combination is beautiful classic 69 Strat sound with the wonderful tone of Texas mixed in. What a fantastic sounding guitar in this setup!! I like this setup much better than the Fat 50s it came with.

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Strat Pickups:

I gave then four stars because many people will not read the five or one star ratings, but they are five stars all the way. I have put these pickups in several stratocasters and I like them a lot. To me they make a strat sound like a strat is suppose to, they have soul and quack, they increase the "Finderness" of the tone. I researched various wiring configurations and found that the instructions call for a wiring set up similar to a 50's stratocaster. That will work, however if you ignore the instructions and simply take your original pickups out and wire these back in your guitar, the way the old ones were connected, it should sound better, if you have a non USA stratocaster consider replacing the pots and caps and wiring with Fender USA parts for better tone. The reviewers who did not like these pickups either got a bad set or they need a guitar setup by a professional, or there is a possibility their guitar will never sound great, every one sounds a little different. If you are looking for the SRV tone these pickups are part of the equation, SRV reportedly used a Marshall club and country 4140 (loud clean and glassy) and a Fender Super Reverb (for added distortion) in stereo, and a couple petals. You can't expect a set of pickups to be a fix all. Also, If you're getting string buzz, especially if you increased your string gage you might want to adjust the saddles up a hair or take it to a pro for a proper neck setup. I had one guitar that had a buzz in the G string and I finally figured it was the string saddle that was loose and it was buzzing at the second fret, so I raised the saddle and reset the intonation and it sounds clear and nice.

Seriously, with a proper setup these pickups will not make your strings buzz! They will give your Stratocaster a pair of Texas balls, the rest is up to you. A large portion of tone is in the fingers!

Well, like the title says. With Fender, one man's noise is another man's music. Bottom line these are noisy, Really noisy, 60 cycle humming pickups. They came in a Fender Deluxe Roadhouse that I bought. I immediately replaced them with Lace Sensor Holy Grails. That's the sound you want.

I got these to replace the stock pickups on my MiM strat. I had heard that they were used on some higher priced models. These sound bright and chimey. I really like how in any switch position they breath new tone and life into my humble guitar. Am very pleased with the product and a great upgrade.

I'm not a very experienced musician, but have worked in the field as a sound tech, and know good tone when I hear it. My Strat came with Fat 50s, which sounded great, but I wanted something more aggressive, and this pickups give me what I wanted.

Comments about Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Strat Pickups:

After reading some of the reviews (both positive and negative) I figure I would throw one in there... I have a '96 Fender Lone Star Strat that came equipped with a pair of Texas Specials in the neck and middle (Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates+ in the bridge). Now played acoustically the guitar has a very full, round and robust sound, if just a touch dark. Plugged in, the Texas Specials, I have found over the years, to be just a bit on the muddy side. Now pickups are a very subjective thing when it comes to what guitar I put them in, and I feel these would probably thrive a bit more in a slightly brighter guitar. YMMV

Installed in my late model MIM strat. A HUGE improvement over the stock pickups. The stock pickups in a MIM strat are pretty close to what you'd find in a toy guitar... Lots of plastic and ceramic bar magnets. These pickups have added a dimension of clarity to my sound that im quite pleased with. Open chords sound much more defined, and notes above the 12th fret sound sweet! If you have a MIM strat, this is probably the best single upgrade you can give your guitar. I HIGHLY recommend these.
