Overview

The Fender Champion Amp is a 5W tube guitar amplifier with a 6-inch speaker and 1950 "two tone" cosmetics. This simple tribute to the cute and collectible 1949-53-era Fender guitar amplifier makes small-room sessions lots of fun! Originally intended as a student model, the Champion Amp (also known as the Champ) has also been employed by many professionals for its low output, easy-to-record capabilities. Fender has added a higher-gain preamp circuit to take the overdriven tone beyond that of the original, and a choice of High- or Low-gain inputs. An internal speaker output jack allows the use of a larger speaker cabinet.

The original Champion 600 had a low-gain preamp with 6SJ7 tube; the 12AX7 and associated tone circuitry lets the amp be driven harder for more overdrive.

5W tube power amplifier driving a 6-inch speaker provides perfect low volume for practice or recording.

Internal speaker can be disconnected, allowing amp to be used with a larger external speaker cabinet.

I don't usually write reveiws...for anything. So it shows just how much I love this little amp (Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp). I was looking for a good practice amp, so I went to guitarcenter. I grabbed a Les Paul, plugged in, and man does it sing. The clean tone is very glassy and thick. Great for Jazz. Crank it up, and you get a beutiful bluesy crunch. The simplistic design, the leather exterior, and retro look sealed the deal for me. For 200$ you're getting a whole lotta amp. Though it's only 5 watts It's actually quite loud. I think it would be unreasonable to gig with it, but I record with the thing alot. It's well suited for everything-except maybe metal. I actually play in a Hardcore band, so I use a pedal and it sounds wonderful.

This is a beautiful amp IF IF IF IF you upgrade the tubes. I've had two of these with the same problem. Both had an audible sizzle at all volumes and a frequent "pffffft, pfffffft" sound." I now have an American tube in the pre-amp and a Russian 6V6 power tube and the tone is gorgeous. I give this amp a 5-plus if you swap tubes. With the stock tubes it was a constant annoyance and disappointment. Props to FENDER on their customer service. They were very attentive when I contacted them.

A decent amp

By Clancy W.

from Little Rock, AR

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

First off, ill state what SHOULD be obvious...this amp has a single knob (volume) so of course it's not going to score too high in the "features" catagory. But as far as tone goes, this is a refreshingly good amp. I bought it as a practice amp cuz I felt like it was a little crazy to fire up my 100 watt half-stack just to mess around in my dorm room. When plugged into the high input, you can crank the volume and get a slight growl that's good for blues or even older rock. But the low input gives you the iconic fender clean. I'd deff recomend the lil guy to any one

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

When I saw this amp, I thought what can 5 watts and a 6 inch speaker do? I am impressed! The sound this amp produces is awesome! Just buy a Holy Grail Reverb Pedal to use with the amp and you will be ready to go.

Cool Lil' Combo

By Bluzman54

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I picked one of these up a week and a half ago and I am impressed with the tone of this little beauty. With a Strat, you get an amazing amount of bass for just a 6" speaker. Cranked, it sounds like the tone in ZZ Topp's "Blue Jean Blues". It is not a loud amp. But it makes up for it in crisp clear tone. Put a reverb or delay in front of it and it's like a trip to the fifties.Les Paul owners will have to back off on the guitar volume to avoid too much mud.Strat players who love blues will dig this amp.

Fender Champion 600

By Briand

from Fountain Valley, Ca

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I was looking for a bedroom tube amp, and this Fender Champion 600 fits the bill. I play Fender Strat and Gibson SG with it(on the high and low inputs respectively). The result is a flexible tone, that varies from clean, chimey, and a decent warm for bluesy rock. With pedals, it can handle all the styles of music that I'd like to play. I'm 100% satisfied with my purchase.

Good for what it is

By DixieJody

from Chattanooga, TN

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I tried one out to see how it compares to my Vox AC4TV. In a small room it will crank and it puts out some nice clean and blues-type tones. However,in reality this is an amp for beginners who need to worry more about learning guitar rather than tone. It is easy to use and sounds decent with both Fender single coils and Gibson humbuckers. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is a good value and a solid piece of equipment for what it is and how much it costs. However, if you are a seasoned player looking for a quality small tube combo amp under $300 I recommend going with the Vox AC4TV 1x10. It is an excellent amp with great features that gives a variety of tones and is great for lower-volume playing or for travel.

Special Use Amp

By vaillantk

from Rockville, MD

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

OK, I've been using this for about 3 weeks now, mostly with a Gibson Les Paul. I also own a Fender Princeton Recording amp so I'm hooked on that all-tube overdrive sound. This little amp is only 5 watts with "low" and "high" gain inputs. It has a wonderful tone in either mode: instant full-on cranked tube amp sound. The issue for some is that you can really only use it at a low volume: assuming your guitar volume knobs at 10- you can only do about 6 on the amp volume before it gets muddy. It's perfect for using in an apartment bedroom, you won't need any pedals unless you favor metal. Price, tone and quality are top-notch, just don't expect too much in the volume department.

Big things come in small packages

By RockyM

from Malverne, NY

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I bought this little baby last Sunday. I needed a smaller amp to bring to a from my apt to play with family and friends. I have the Tweed Hot Rod Deluxe which I love, but is too heavy to be banging around going to places just to jam unless I'm playing at a gig. I was looking for something smaller but needed to have great tone. Well this small package has a big heart! All tube sound, the cleans are crystal clear and for 5 watts, it's pretty loud. My nephews were both blown away. First they laughed at me when I walked in and they saw this lunch box sized amp. One has the Fender 25R Frontman and the other has the Marshall MG4 Series MG15, and this lil baby was still heard, not as loud, but held up. I play an Epiphone Standard Plus Top (Honeyburst) which has a bassier sound than a Tele or Strat, but being a Neil Young fan and love that "jet plane in a thunderstorm" sound, this combo works for me so I purchased a distortion pedal and this amp Rocks! Not like the HRD's More drive sound but still, for fooling around and practice I am NOT disappointed at all! If you want a great practice amp and something to travel with to jam or just to fool around with, I highly recommend this small but effective amp. It has that retro look that's pretty cool too. Kudos to Fender!!!

Sweet little amp

By Fred

from Ruby, MI

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I bought this amp the day after I bought the Crate V8 Palmino. I wanted a small tube amp after selling my big tube combo. This little amp has the sweetest tone if you want a clean to slightly overdriven sound. I think it really lets the tone of your guitar shine through because there is no tone circuit, just pure, sweet, glistening sound. I am playing a Schecter Blackjack with Seymour Duncans on it and running a Digitech RP250 through it. In short, while the Crate screams, this little honey sings. This amp is staying with me, the Crate is not.

Good amp with great potential

By zack benner

from Mechanicsburg, PA

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

The have owned this amp for about 2 years. Right off the bat you can tell its a Fender, and it sounds kind of like a silver face Champ (it sort of is). Sweet sounding highs, sounds sort of compressed. It sounds great for blues and country, the twang is fantastic with a single coil fender guitar. Also have a Gibson SG Standard and it sounds pretty good as well. The speaker is horrible, cant handle any volume (nor can it handle the balls of the SG). That is the stock Champion 600 in a nutshell. If you are into spending a little cash to customize your Champ, you will not be disappointed. First off, replace the speaker (the Jenson and Weber are the only easy options). the Weber runs for 45 bucks, and sounds fantastic. Changed the grill cloth. I also upgraded my tubes with NOS tubes for 105 dollars. Also, I installed a switch that allows you to run the stock circuit in one position, and a 5f1 circuit (tweed style, bypasses the tone stack) which took 2 hours to easily install, and cost about 5 bucks. so for 150 for the amp, plus 155 dollars and some time, I have an absolutely astounding amp. I will put money on it that you will not find a sweeter sounding tube amp for the money, its just so much fun to play. Sounds just like the classic tweed and silverfaces.

stock not very good, but HUGE potential

By Gabriel Becker

from Indianapolis, Indiana

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I bought one of these champion 600s to have a nice little travel tube amp. Right out of the box, the amp is pretty lame. A bad sounding speaker, and terribly cheap tubes. However, with very minimal upgrades, you will have an amp that you LOVE! Installed new JJ tubes, and a Weber Alnico speaker. Its now a tone monster. Because I'm so pleased with the amp now, I give it 5 stars. With factory specs, I give it 2 stars.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

This amplifier needs substantial modifications in order to actually function and provide anything close to reasonable sound quality. The mods include upgrading the single speaker, replacing the tubes, potentially the capacitors and other electrical components along with the grill cloth. The stock unit as it is arrived buzzes from any nearby electrical interference, fluorescent lighting and the sound quality is poor. Basically you are buying a case with a mediocre quality board inside and a speaker that is less than fantastic. Why doesn't the vendor/manufacturer make these upgrades, provide a grill cloth that allows sound transmission through it and charge the extra $50? This amp is more like a kit, but without the parts needed to complete it included. Yes, it comes with tubes, grill cloth and a speaker. But no, they are not good quality and your options are either spend the time and money replacing and upgrading them, or mostly letting this unit sit on a shelf and look pretty.

Got this as a gift for my son and he didn't think it was worth all of the work to upgrade it and get a halfway decent sound from it. Returned for a solid state amp that will be of better use for him.

I am mid-lifer and have been playing for about three years. Started with a Mustang I and later added a Mustang III. Love both of them but always wondered what I might be missing since they aren't tube amps. Bought this on sale and found it is perfect for me, playing a home and continuing to practice.

What a revelation. The amp sounds, to my ears, great. I can now begin to appreciate what I have heard about tube amps. So glassy and clean. Added a reverb pedal (Boss RV6) and now I am in heaven. Surprised how much more touch sensitive this amp is. And I can begin to experiment by swapping out the tubes, and maybe the speaker to see how it changes things. In short this is a great first tube amp to allow a solid state player to explore new things. No it is not Princeton or even a Blues Jr. But right now, as I only play at home, I don't need that much power. Maybe later though! Highly recommended.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

This is an interesting amplifier out of the box. It is pretty average and ok for a low wattage amp and is fairly comparable in tone to others in this price point. What makes this stand out is the easy platform for simple modifications that will drastically change your sound. As mentioned in other reviews, the stock tubes are very fizzy. Easily accessed changing them to something a little higher end will be the first step in getting that classic champ sound. Secondly, the grill cloth significantly dampens the sound. Changing these two things out will give you something great, adding a replacement speaker will top this thing off the charts. Don't underestimate the 5W. I have used this un miced in a small church and have been able to fill the entire sanctuary. A pretty decent workhorse also.

I guess this is just perfect for my personal set up. I am a hobbyist and most of the time I play my electric guitar in my bedroom or in our living room. This amp does not annoy my family or my neighbors. Just perfect in an apartment building. I had bigger amps before and I could not get their full potentials since I could not crank them up so as not to disturb my neighbors. Now that I have this amp,I can enjoy its creamy tone. When I need a distorted or overdriven sound, all I have to do is put my guitar multiple effects and I tell you, it's heaven!

I think this is a Fender Amp that really reveals my guitar's (It's Fender Classic 50's Strat) tone and sound. Incredible!

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

Been looking to try out one of these amps for some time now. Found one at a local guitar shop and sorry to say, that I did not like it. It sounds OK. Has some good bite to it, when turned up. But, it is not very loud. If you gotta turn it up to hear it all you get is distorted sound. The clean is there, but at very low volume. Needs a tad more power and a bigger speaker.

Sounds great, but has a little hum.

        By Me

        from McLean, VA

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I'm not sure why the person giving this a 3 was looking at this amp if they wanted something so loud. It's plenty loud for it's intended use. If you are a bedroom player as I am, this is a great solution. I wanted an amp that wouldn't keep me on a first name bases with the police. This little guy is warm and chimes nicely. To my ears, it has really good dynamic range for such a small form factor. This little 6" speaker offers just the right amount of base for me, but won't rattle the walls. Mids are clear and ringing, highs are bright. This little amp has a very pleasing "jingly" quality as best as I can describe it. If your really hellbent on destroying your relationship with neighbors, you can crank it up loud enough to get yourself into hot water with the local authorities. However, it breaks up at around 6 or 7 and starts to get buzzy. When your not playing there is a constant hum. My Fender Vibro Champ XD also hums, I assume it comes with the territory for tubes, at least at this price level. It isn't unbearable and doesn't effect the sound quality when your playing, unless you crank it. If you play around with the volume on your guitar and the amp volume, you can keep unwanted buzz at bay, again, unless you want to play really loud. If you have the extra money you might want to go look at the Vox AC4TV as well. It has the tone attenuator and also sounds great, maybe better than the Champ 600, although a teeny bit boxy. They have different voicing after all, so that comes into play as far as which is "better" according to the sound you may prefer. As for myself, I vacillated back and forth between the Champ 600 and the Vox and eventually went with the Champ, although it has a much smaller speaker, it seemed to handle the low end a bit better at lower volume. I could be wrong about that in 'real world' use, as I only compared them at the Local GC. I wish they would pay a little more attention to the fact that people are actually trying to hear what they are there to demo. It's hard to evaluate for sound when they have the music cranked over the store PA, and they let the 12 year old grab the most expensive guitars he can find and play Iggy Pop's "The Passenger" over and over for the hour and half I was there. Props to Junior's dad for introducing him to Iggy; at least the kid wasn't fixated on a Jonas Brothers song, or I probably would have left the joint with a sonically induced lobotomy and blood dripping from my ear drums. I finally just grabbed the champ and took it home to listen to it in earnest. I'm gonna keep it. I'm considering getting the Vox to bring home and compare, but I'm afraid my self control will take a hike and I'll just end up buying them both. To make a long story short, this is a great little amp for practice or bedroom play with full on tube tone at a great priceۡminus a star for the slight hum and buzziness over 6 or 7 on the volume knob. I might swap out the tubes later, but it sounds find to me, stock as-is.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

When I first got the champ 600 I kept experiencing a very annoying crackle. Fender customer support was great and sent me a new one. But same problem. I decided to swap out the chinese tubes and voila! This thing is clear as a bell now, and has the sweetest tone imaginable. I would like to put some fx in front of it, but it just sounds too good by itself. Also, you can use the second input to jam with your iPod. This is a PERFECT practice amp. I would give it 5 stars if not for the bad tubes mine came with. But maybe Fender has fixed that by now. I've jammed with it next to a Blues Jr. and it holds it's own. Sweet amp.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I love this little amp so much! Obviously, the volume before it starts trembling and farting is limited. But unless you are trying to compete with a wild rock drummer, there is a respectable amount of sound emanating from this cute enclosure. Moreover: The warm, mellow tube tone is head and shoulders above anything else in the price range I've heard. The Champion is a great candidate for modding. I personally exchanged the speaker and got a touch more clarity, and I ditched the cheap 6L6 for a nice TAD model, but that's absolutely not to say that the stock speaker is bad, and that you don't get nice sounds out of the box. Recording is where this little cutie pie has really paid off for me. I've put countless guitar parts down where I just needed a quick and easy setup, often late at night where low volume was key. It takes effects well, within reason. But other than a Tube Screamer and some reverb, there's not that much you're likely to want. The sound is very 3-dimensional, due to the clever design, and "stands" in the room nicely. Last but not least, the looks are lovely, and it doesn't get more plug-and-play than a one-switch, one volume control setup. I never missed additional knobs. Get one while they're available.
