Overview

The Fender Champion Amp is a 5W tube guitar amplifier with a 6-inch speaker and 1950 "two tone" cosmetics. This simple tribute to the cute and collectible 1949-53-era Fender guitar amplifier makes small-room sessions lots of fun! Originally intended as a student model, the Champion Amp (also known as the Champ) has also been employed by many professionals for its low output, easy-to-record capabilities. Fender has added a higher-gain preamp circuit to take the overdriven tone beyond that of the original, and a choice of High- or Low-gain inputs. An internal speaker output jack allows the use of a larger speaker cabinet.

The original Champion 600 had a low-gain preamp with 6SJ7 tube; the 12AX7 and associated tone circuitry lets the amp be driven harder for more overdrive.

5W tube power amplifier driving a 6-inch speaker provides perfect low volume for practice or recording.

Internal speaker can be disconnected, allowing amp to be used with a larger external speaker cabinet.

I don't usually write reveiws...for anything. So it shows just how much I love this little amp (Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp). I was looking for a good practice amp, so I went to guitarcenter. I grabbed a Les Paul, plugged in, and man does it sing. The clean tone is very glassy and thick. Great for Jazz. Crank it up, and you get a beutiful bluesy crunch. The simplistic design, the leather exterior, and retro look sealed the deal for me. For 200$ you're getting a whole lotta amp. Though it's only 5 watts It's actually quite loud. I think it would be unreasonable to gig with it, but I record with the thing alot. It's well suited for everything-except maybe metal. I actually play in a Hardcore band, so I use a pedal and it sounds wonderful.

This is a beautiful amp IF IF IF IF you upgrade the tubes. I've had two of these with the same problem. Both had an audible sizzle at all volumes and a frequent "pffffft, pfffffft" sound." I now have an American tube in the pre-amp and a Russian 6V6 power tube and the tone is gorgeous. I give this amp a 5-plus if you swap tubes. With the stock tubes it was a constant annoyance and disappointment. Props to FENDER on their customer service. They were very attentive when I contacted them.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

This is my first tube amp and I love it! I did change the tubes (JJ) but probably didn't really need to do so (yet). It has such warmth and that silky Fender sound that I didn't get from my Champion 40, but of course it doesn't have the modeling or effects of that amp). It is perfect for practice since it gives such a clear tone that doesn't cover up your playing mistakes; you really have to work to make your playing sound good. I got it on sale and knew going in that I would replace the tubes based on other reviews. Overall I am very happy with this purchase.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I love this little guy! Sweet, warm, classic Tweed tone at a more descrete volume level. I play my Tele though it in the bedroom and living room without giving my wife a headache. I get the break up I want at volume level my wife can appreciate. If you're a guitarist living in an apartment, this is IDEAL. So much funner than my little solid state Peavey. And I won't have to split ears with it when I record either!

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I am mid-lifer and have been playing for about three years. Started with a Mustang I and later added a Mustang III. Love both of them but always wondered what I might be missing since they aren't tube amps. Bought this on sale and found it is perfect for me, playing a home and continuing to practice.

What a revelation. The amp sounds, to my ears, great. I can now begin to appreciate what I have heard about tube amps. So glassy and clean. Added a reverb pedal (Boss RV6) and now I am in heaven. Surprised how much more touch sensitive this amp is. And I can begin to experiment by swapping out the tubes, and maybe the speaker to see how it changes things. In short this is a great first tube amp to allow a solid state player to explore new things. No it is not Princeton or even a Blues Jr. But right now, as I only play at home, I don't need that much power. Maybe later though! Highly recommended.

Like the size and simplicity of this great amp. Sounds just as good turned all the way up. No bells or whistles, just a solid light weight tube amp.
Like this better than my Vibro Champ costing 3x this.

I got my first Fender Champ amp when I was 10 or 11 years old around 1965 and have been playing thru Fender tube amps ever since. I bought the last "champ" they had @ G.C. last nite- the sound of this little amp really took me back to the Surf, Beatles & Stones tunes I used to play & still do. In short, it's the perfect practice amp, the speaker breaks up with just the right amount of distortion when you crank it up, & has a really nice, full, balanced tone for jazz work- no mods are needed, it sounds great right out of the box!

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

This is an interesting amplifier out of the box. It is pretty average and ok for a low wattage amp and is fairly comparable in tone to others in this price point. What makes this stand out is the easy platform for simple modifications that will drastically change your sound. As mentioned in other reviews, the stock tubes are very fizzy. Easily accessed changing them to something a little higher end will be the first step in getting that classic champ sound. Secondly, the grill cloth significantly dampens the sound. Changing these two things out will give you something great, adding a replacement speaker will top this thing off the charts. Don't underestimate the 5W. I have used this un miced in a small church and have been able to fill the entire sanctuary. A pretty decent workhorse also.

I am using this small incredible amp for my bedroom and living room using my Fender Classic Player 50's Strat. In my own opinion, this is the best amp for bedroom without annoying the neighbors and family members! Its creamy tone made me buy this amp. I guess, this is perfect for apartment dwellers like me.

It may not be loud for large gigs but just right for small venues. Of course nobody in his right mind may use this for stage.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I guess this is just perfect for my personal set up. I am a hobbyist and most of the time I play my electric guitar in my bedroom or in our living room. This amp does not annoy my family or my neighbors. Just perfect in an apartment building. I had bigger amps before and I could not get their full potentials since I could not crank them up so as not to disturb my neighbors. Now that I have this amp,I can enjoy its creamy tone. When I need a distorted or overdriven sound, all I have to do is put my guitar multiple effects and I tell you, it's heaven!

I think this is a Fender Amp that really reveals my guitar's (It's Fender Classic 50's Strat) tone and sound. Incredible!

Just bought this as a birthday gift for myself at the Northridge store. I wasn't thinking about buying the Champ, but decided to give it a listen. I tried different guitars(Strat, Hollow Body) and every time, it was a nice creamy sound. I decided that this would be a nice little amp to have in the living room. For only 5 watts, it sounds great turned up. There are two inputs, High and Low. The book says that "Low provides cleaner response with high output instruments." I also like the look of the Champ. Size(15lb) and looks(cream and brown) wise, it will work well in the living room. I am very happy that I got this as a birthday gift, from myself!

This was my first tube amp and it completely reformed my idea of tone. It is awesome on its own, but it really needs new tubes. I put some jjs in there and it was that much better. When used with a tubescreamer type pedal and an eq pedal, its power is truly unleashed.
