Overview

The Fender Champion Amp is a 5W tube guitar amplifier with a 6-inch speaker and 1950 "two tone" cosmetics. This simple tribute to the cute and collectible 1949-53-era Fender guitar amplifier makes small-room sessions lots of fun! Originally intended as a student model, the Champion Amp (also known as the Champ) has also been employed by many professionals for its low output, easy-to-record capabilities. Fender has added a higher-gain preamp circuit to take the overdriven tone beyond that of the original, and a choice of High- or Low-gain inputs. An internal speaker output jack allows the use of a larger speaker cabinet.

The original Champion 600 had a low-gain preamp with 6SJ7 tube; the 12AX7 and associated tone circuitry lets the amp be driven harder for more overdrive.

5W tube power amplifier driving a 6-inch speaker provides perfect low volume for practice or recording.

Internal speaker can be disconnected, allowing amp to be used with a larger external speaker cabinet.

I don't usually write reveiws...for anything. So it shows just how much I love this little amp (Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp). I was looking for a good practice amp, so I went to guitarcenter. I grabbed a Les Paul, plugged in, and man does it sing. The clean tone is very glassy and thick. Great for Jazz. Crank it up, and you get a beutiful bluesy crunch. The simplistic design, the leather exterior, and retro look sealed the deal for me. For 200$ you're getting a whole lotta amp. Though it's only 5 watts It's actually quite loud. I think it would be unreasonable to gig with it, but I record with the thing alot. It's well suited for everything-except maybe metal. I actually play in a Hardcore band, so I use a pedal and it sounds wonderful.

This is a beautiful amp IF IF IF IF you upgrade the tubes. I've had two of these with the same problem. Both had an audible sizzle at all volumes and a frequent "pffffft, pfffffft" sound." I now have an American tube in the pre-amp and a Russian 6V6 power tube and the tone is gorgeous. I give this amp a 5-plus if you swap tubes. With the stock tubes it was a constant annoyance and disappointment. Props to FENDER on their customer service. They were very attentive when I contacted them.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I love this little amp so much! Obviously, the volume before it starts trembling and farting is limited. But unless you are trying to compete with a wild rock drummer, there is a respectable amount of sound emanating from this cute enclosure. Moreover: The warm, mellow tube tone is head and shoulders above anything else in the price range I've heard. The Champion is a great candidate for modding. I personally exchanged the speaker and got a touch more clarity, and I ditched the cheap 6L6 for a nice TAD model, but that's absolutely not to say that the stock speaker is bad, and that you don't get nice sounds out of the box. Recording is where this little cutie pie has really paid off for me. I've put countless guitar parts down where I just needed a quick and easy setup, often late at night where low volume was key. It takes effects well, within reason. But other than a Tube Screamer and some reverb, there's not that much you're likely to want. The sound is very 3-dimensional, due to the clever design, and "stands" in the room nicely. Last but not least, the looks are lovely, and it doesn't get more plug-and-play than a one-switch, one volume control setup. I never missed additional knobs. Get one while they're available.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I use this product mostly in my bedroom. I bought it to see if I thought tube amps were better than my solid-state amp. I have a Line 6 fire hawk hooked up to an L2m speaker. I always used amp modeling. I always have a hard time dialing in just the right sound with it. I think there are too many options on it. This little amp is the exact opposite. It is super easy to dial in on a tone that sounds great! It sounds awesome! I wish I had gone to a tube amp years ago.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I wanted this amp three years ago, I ordered it only to find that Fender had stopped making them. A guy talked me into a Bugera V5. I didn't like it as much as the Champ.( I played one at Guitar Center in Salt Lake City). The Bugera had zero head room and couldn't be used at any volume without adding gain and distortion. I love the Champion 600 for just that reason. You can turn it up and get a fairly nice volume with those clean Fender tones. The higher gain channel allows for natural breakup if you desire.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

This amplifier needs substantial modifications in order to actually function and provide anything close to reasonable sound quality. The mods include upgrading the single speaker, replacing the tubes, potentially the capacitors and other electrical components along with the grill cloth. The stock unit as it is arrived buzzes from any nearby electrical interference, fluorescent lighting and the sound quality is poor. Basically you are buying a case with a mediocre quality board inside and a speaker that is less than fantastic. Why doesn't the vendor/manufacturer make these upgrades, provide a grill cloth that allows sound transmission through it and charge the extra $50? This amp is more like a kit, but without the parts needed to complete it included. Yes, it comes with tubes, grill cloth and a speaker. But no, they are not good quality and your options are either spend the time and money replacing and upgrading them, or mostly letting this unit sit on a shelf and look pretty.

Got this as a gift for my son and he didn't think it was worth all of the work to upgrade it and get a halfway decent sound from it. Returned for a solid state amp that will be of better use for him.

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I use it for practice, which is all it's really suited for. Little 6" speaker is inadequate. I bought it to replace an Epiphone Jr Valve amp that was destroyed in a fire. The Epi was one of the best little amps ever made, pushing its 5w of tube driven power through an amazing 8" Eminence driver. The warmth, crunch and amazing power were ridiculous for an amp of its size. I was hoping to catch the same lightning in a bottle with this amp, but to no avail. I can see why they stopped production on these. Very disappointing.

This is my first tube amp and I love it! I did change the tubes (JJ) but probably didn't really need to do so (yet). It has such warmth and that silky Fender sound that I didn't get from my Champion 40, but of course it doesn't have the modeling or effects of that amp). It is perfect for practice since it gives such a clear tone that doesn't cover up your playing mistakes; you really have to work to make your playing sound good. I got it on sale and knew going in that I would replace the tubes based on other reviews. Overall I am very happy with this purchase.

I love this little guy! Sweet, warm, classic Tweed tone at a more descrete volume level. I play my Tele though it in the bedroom and living room without giving my wife a headache. I get the break up I want at volume level my wife can appreciate. If you're a guitarist living in an apartment, this is IDEAL. So much funner than my little solid state Peavey. And I won't have to split ears with it when I record either!

Comments about Fender Champion 600 5W 1x6 Combo Amp:

I am mid-lifer and have been playing for about three years. Started with a Mustang I and later added a Mustang III. Love both of them but always wondered what I might be missing since they aren't tube amps. Bought this on sale and found it is perfect for me, playing a home and continuing to practice.

What a revelation. The amp sounds, to my ears, great. I can now begin to appreciate what I have heard about tube amps. So glassy and clean. Added a reverb pedal (Boss RV6) and now I am in heaven. Surprised how much more touch sensitive this amp is. And I can begin to experiment by swapping out the tubes, and maybe the speaker to see how it changes things. In short this is a great first tube amp to allow a solid state player to explore new things. No it is not Princeton or even a Blues Jr. But right now, as I only play at home, I don't need that much power. Maybe later though! Highly recommended.
