When you don't have a surplus of room in your living space there really is no need for much more amp than what the Champion 20 gives you. From my experience unless you play out with a group anything over 15 to 30 watts is just overkill and wasted. Even if you do play out, most bar bands I have seen lately barely have their high dollar amps ticking over and have let most of the job to sound reenforcement and pedals for distortion/overdrive. This amp gives you all the great tone that Fender has developed with the Mustang series without the programing and menu surfing (a big plus I feel). Controls are traditional so that your grandfather would know what to do with it and has a great set of effects to color whatever the song calls for. Construction seems pretty sturdy and you really can't go wrong with Fenders 5 year warranty. Knobs feel smooth to turn and quality pots seem to have been used. If you want two channels go for the 40 as there is no footswitch capability. I have not tried it with pedals but I'm sure those with experience could make it a good platform to do so. The only drawbacks I see are the Power On light is just a small LED rather than a jewel light (not a real big deal but would have finished off the Blackface look),and to my ear the volume changes a little with each amp selected (again not a big deal, just adjust the volume). I wish it was made in USA but it's not 1975 anymore. If Fender Corp. reads this I honestly believe that if these were made in the USA for $50 to $75 dollars more most musicians would gladly pay for that badge of honor. Have had about a week now and i am just as satisfied as when i first fired it up.

This amp has all you need for the price point...for a beginner, it's a mind-blower. But if it won't operate properly, all of that goes out the window. I purchased this model tonight and noticed that when I first powered it on, it crackled and hissed before I'd plugged anything into it. Thinking it'd resolve itself, I played for a few minutes after which I heard 4-5 loud pops and then total silence. To make matters worse, it's a 3-hour round trip for me to just return/exchange the thing. Major hassle. But a great sounding powerful little amp.

Nice Little Amp

By Blair Stewart

from Arlington, VA

Comments about Fender Champion 20 Guitar Combo Amp:

I purchased this amp to take with me to jam sessions and practice at the house. All in all it is a nice little amp. It is basic with a few effects available which to me was a bonus. I have had it for a couple of weeks now and at first thought about going up to the 40, but I don't really need the extra volume or the few extra effects, or size and weight. So I am satisfied with this amp because it fills my particular needs. If you have effect pedals you could really get some very cool sounds out of it. And for the money I think it was worth it. If you are a beginner this would be a VERY good amp to learn on.

Great amp - reasonable price

By Scott

from Bay area, California

Comments about Fender Champion 20 Guitar Combo Amp:

Received this amp about 2 weeks ago and have used it several times. My last amp was an Ampeg Gemini II which I bought in 1968 and it still works! But I needed a small portable amp to use with my Gibson electric. The amp has a nice tone and good volume with my semi-hollow body guitar (and also a kid's cheapo guitar), and the effects are great. I like the reverb option which we use when amplifying a microphone instead of the guitar. Note that it's a single channel amp - ie, you can't use a mic and guitar together without using a mic pre-amp with the aux input. However, you *can* play music from your phone, for example, into the aux input and sing with the mic (and reverb) plugged into the main input - karaoke style!

Fits my beginner needs with sound a price

Comments about Fender Champion 20 Guitar Combo Amp:

This Amp is very good. I can get some good sounds out of it either with effects or no effects. It is basic and simple to use. It is a good choice for beginners because it is a step up from what you would get in a starter pack.Even though it is a one channel amp, it comes with custom voices that can deliver the sound of a two channel amp if not more. It also can make a good practice amp because of its small size and weight. You can leave it on the floor or put it on a table or shelf. It can get loud, I think it delivers all of the 20 watts. Great choice for someone on a budget, or someone that does not need an amp over 20 watts. For the price, it's a smart choice. You can't go wrong.

Love the many different sounds and effects you get from this amp. Much more powerful than I expected. The headphone jack makes it easy to practice while my husband is watching tv or sleeping, so I get in much more time than I would otherwise. It's going to bring me to the next level. I really love this little amp!

Comments about Fender Champion 20 Guitar Combo Amp:

I usually use a front man 25r, it is a little heavy to carry around. I could not believe that this little git. could sound close to my 25 with it s 10 inch speaker. after buying a couple different small amps that sounded poor, I packed up my guitar and went to guitar center and tried one of the champion 20 s. before I played 1 scale I knew this was it. I play clean, with reverb. I could not believe the base that comes out of an 8 inch speaker. I was really impressed. I can not tell you much about dirty as I do not play it.

I bought this as a practice amp, looking for something that was easy to use but had some features to it. Since I already had a Fender Mustang I thought I'd try this one. Thought this certainly is easy to use, the sound quality is not very good. I've had it for a month, tried different guitars and about every combination of settings possible. I spend more time adjusting than playing - the sound quality just isn't there. Maybe it's just me, but I plan on getting rid of this one and trying another...

Comments about Fender Champion 20 Guitar Combo Amp:

I have been searching for the best practice amp I could find for a while. I have tried everything. Spider 15, Katana, Acoustic G10, Vypyr 15, and they all had done issues. Mainly Fizz and thin sounding. I did homework on this amp and was on the fence due to some alarming negative reviews. I'm here to say I am glad I took the gamble.

Some players get very narrow minded if they can't blast everything on 10 and make what ever amp they play sound good. My time with the champion came to the conclusion that max settings for EQ shouldn't go above 5 for gain on clean settings and 6-8 on metal. This amp is plenty warm regardless which setting you're on. Good Job on voicing Fender!

This amp really shines through headphones. I was playing metal 2000 with a Squire Strat with single coils and it was hitting those palm notes with clarity and no mud. The effects are plenty strong and powerfully noticeable when cranked. I especially love the chorus setting maxed as I got the same clean sound for Metallica during their Load/reload days. Something I have been trying to do with multi effects pedals for years.

I would like to add that I have owned the mustang v2 a few years ago when they came out and the champion has more of a natural sound while the mustang sounds digital. The Champion is more of a quick tinker for tone and play while the Mustang is more of a fine tune with software. Something to consider if you're stuck between the two.

The only problems I have encountered with this is the hiss/pop when turning knobs which I read is normal. All and all I'm in love with this thing. I can't wait to get a second cable to see how well it takes pedals on clean channels. Also, this is a 20 watt practice amp and I don't see it taking high volumes well so don't expect to gig with this. It's soul purpose is a practice amp. Go bigger for live playing.

Nice little amp for the money. The reverb is rich and I primarily use the 60's tube amp setting. The British-style amp sounds are also realistic.
I just needed something for practicing in my home office area and this fits the bill nicely. There are some savage distortion amp models too if you like that sort of thing.

Very nice little amp. Effects are very nice, but a bit confusing to use.

Comments about Fender Champion 20 Guitar Combo Amp:

I use this as a practice amp. It has WAY more power than I need. I really like the voice and effects options. I also like the updated earphone jack and an input for mp3 players. I would buy this again and again.
