This guitar was great out of the box. Had been looking for a cheaper acoustic to play at gigs and do some recording with and ended up with this one. First off it sounds really good for how much I payed for it, but I decided to make it the best it could be and added an unbleached bone nut and saddle, as well as some bone bridge pins. I then threw some Martin Acoustic SP strings on there. Wasn't expecting the change in tone that I got. It turned into a guitar with a tone that was well worth over $1000 dollars. Played it side by side with my neighbors Martin DC16 GTE and his Custom D classic and we were both surprised on how it good it played alongside those guitars. There were some slight tonal differences that the DC16 had over the Fender, but overall it sounded amazing. The guitar now has a rich/ full tone rather than the somewhat twangy tone you get in a lot of low budget guitars. It cost me 15 dollars on Stew Mac to order the bone nut, saddle, and bridge pins, and 50 bucks at the local guitar shop to have them installed by the luthier. Anyone with they guitar or looking to get this guitar should seriously consider doing this upgrade.

After playing my Martin D-28 since 1975 and having the head stock break, I needed another guitar. I bought this Fender from GC because it was what I could afford at the time. I have owned this particular guitar for about six years. This is a decent guitar, keeping in mind you get what you pay for when it comes to guitar construction and materials. If you are starting out or your budget is limited and you want an acoustic that can plug in, the 140SCE is a reasonable choice. Out of the box the action was high, so have it set up properly. The sustain is on the weak side, the tone can get muddy in hard strumming and be careful with the preamp because the plastic clip that holds the battery housing, breaks easily. I play a very broad range of music and styles from finger and flat picking, blues, jazz to rock and even with the things I mentioned, the guitar is very playable for the price.

Nice guitar for the $$

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was looking to spend around $400 for a guitar for a Christmas present for my daughter 2 years ago. I was looking at Yamaha and similar models. The honest sales person said hey try this Fender it plays and sounds better than a lot of these higher priced ones. He was right great sound and smooth action. The electronics had great sound and control. The built in tuner was a plus. My daughter loves this guitar plays it everyday, still in great shape and stays in tune. Great size for females. Do your self a favor and look at this one before you put down the cash.

Fender CD140CSE exceeds expectations

By Dan Seibel

from Boise, Idaho

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased my Fender CD140CSE from Guitar Center in Boise 3 days ago. I spent a lot of time test driving every acoustic/electric they had, including other Fenders. I was looking not only for a good plugged-in sound, but a decent straight acoustic tone for the money. In almost every case the acoustic tone and volume were "blah," including other Fenders. When I strummed this Fender, though, it was "Ahhh!" For a second I thought I'd picked up a much higher cost American guitar. I think Fender has it right on this one! Neck shape and feel is excellent, frets are finished to perfection (no rough edges), overall fit and finish is flawless. Somewhat of a close second was the Epiphone AJ200SCE, but the acoustic tone still wasn't quite as robust, and for some reason they failed to build it with a compensated bridge saddle, which is uncalled for these days. I've played the heck out of this Fender for the last two nights, and couldn't be happier. Getting a solid spruce top, Fishman electronics, great build for the price is astounding! Time will tell of course if this guitar holds up structurally, but from all indications it's built to last.

Great sound...but...

By Jonathan Lang

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

It has great sound with or without an amp. I really like the neck versus the epiphone i had last. However, i have had it for 2 weeks and the hook up in the bottom for the cord pretty much just fell out...so it is already getting fixed. Love the sound, wish I had not had to deal with a problem this early.

Everything I wanted

By Steve

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar a couple days ago at the Fayetteville, GA store. I went in looking for an acoustic/electric guitar in the $300-600 range with a built in tuner because I don't want to risk dragging around my Gibson J45 too much. I tried lots of guitars and would have liked to have rosewood but when I tried this one I realized it was really what I needed. It has good sound, well built tuner

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar (Fender cd 140 SCE) two years ago. Their sound has body, is sweet and yet profound. It's nice to play it, do the torn and lkos chords. is good to follow and to do it alone. I had my hands on more expensive guitars, but this is great and the price is muiy good. Excellent instrument. The bass are deep, the highs are bright and clean. The construction is very nice and finish are very good for the price. If you want a guitar to express strength and sweetness that is appropriate.

LOVE THIS GUITAR

By Dawn

from Wonder Lake, IL

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar last week. I have nothing but great things to say about it. I tried tons of guitars, and spent 2 hours in the store. This guitar was given to me by the manager when I already had an ibanez I was about to purpose. I quickly changed my mind once I strummed this guitar. It sounds great for an acoustic electric. I use to have an Ovation, but this Fender puts it to same. Has great tone, and the action is awesome. The neck seems to work better for me being a female and having smaller hands.. Switched out the strings to Martins, and 10 times better sounding. I would highly recommend this guitar to all!! Well worth the price!!!!

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had my eye on this guitar for a few weeks on the website. I really loved how it looked, and i was really curious on how all the ratings seem to be 5 star worthy. So, i went to guitar center and as soon as i picked this baby up, i just played like I was at home. The neck, the strings, the body, the light brown and rosewood are a piece of art...I knew that I just had to have it. It sounds 5-stars, like one that ranges in the thousands. It's just beautiful!! I've had it for two weeks so far, and every day it's like the sound just gets better and better. Definitely recommend!

amazing for the price

By peter

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have played guitar for 15 years now and my wife and I go out and play acoustic gigs from time to time. I own five acoustic guitars, including this one, which I've had for almost a year now. It's consistently been my favorite and I figured it was time to review it. When shopping for a new guitar a while back, I never really considered Fender as a brand for acoustic guitars. Electric, sure. But I was playing all the Taylors and Martins on my hunt for an acoustic. By chance I picked up this thing at Guitar Center and played it and thought "gosh, this sounds almost as good as those $2,000 I was just playing." Bought it that same day -- which I never do (usually a lot of research goes into any purchase over $40 or so!). Now whenever I go into a music store, I play their nicest guitars and think, "how does this compare to my Fender?" While the $2,000+ guitars are indeed a little better than this Fender, it's not by much. Certainly not $1,700 worth, in my opinion. I always walk out very happy with this guitar's performance.

Try it - Buy It

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have played acoustic for years but have mostly played Fender electrics recently. I was on the lookout for an acoustic-electric to play at gigs. My Conn F27 acoustic is bigger than I want to tote around. I was out of town and stopped in a music store just for fun. They had the Yamaha and Ibanez acoustic-electrics and I was familiar with those. Then I saw this Fender. I didn't even know Fender made this model. I sat down and played it and I was flat out amazed. For $300 the sound and playability are outstanding, clearly better than any of the models in that price range. I had to come back the next day and buy it. It is really sharp looking, much nicer than the picture. The neck is great and the pickup sounds really good. I played my first gig with it and it is everything I hoped for and more. The other musicians said it sounds really nice. If you are in the market for an acoustic-electric then you must try this model. Even if you have to take a chance and get it through the mail without playing it. It is that good.

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was HIGHLY impressed with this Fender guitar. My grandparents surprised me with it and I loved it. I just put Elixir Custom light gauge .011 polyweb strings, and it sounds like a Taylor when you close your eyes. I love the pick guard, too. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Sounded tinny in the store, but I took the word of a friend that new strings would make a world of difference. I liked the look, the action, and the apparent build quality, so I took a chance. Put on a set of D'Addario EFT16 strings, and wow! 100% sound improvement. Also, the wires inside the guitar had come loose, so I had to re-attach them with some good double-sided tape (easy to do when the strings are off). Now I love it.

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar as a Christmas present to myself two years after doing about 3 months of research and trying out various guitars within the price range. I fell in love with it the second I started playing it what I got home and the bond has only gotten stronger over time. It stays in tune extremely well, is incredibly playable and the built-in tuner is fantastic. The picture of the Natural does not do it justice as it is a gorgeous guitar. You would be hard pressed to find a better guitar for double to amount of money.

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I am COMPLETELY satisfied with this guitar. It looks super nice--MUCH better than the picture-- and plays super nice. I haven't had any problems with it so far, although I've never plugged it into an amp. I recommend visiting your local music store to try it out, and I'd also recommend that you purchase it there. I don't trust them to ship it to me. You can check if your local guitar center has one by typing in your zip code on the pick up in store box if you scroll up. BOTTOM LINE: I love this guitar and it is worth much more than they sell it for. P.S. The strings are Fender Dura-Tone coated 80/20 phosphor bronze (.012-.052 Gauge)

Comments about Fender Classic Design Series CD-140SCE Cutaway Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought a Fender 140SCE out of desperation 9 years ago, and I never looked back. It served me well for 9 years, with 5 of those years providing very heavy use. It got banged around, dropped on asphalt, and beat all to heck and still plays like a jewel. I give it 5 stars when comparing it with other guitars around a similar price point. It isn't a $1200 Taylor, so don't expect it to play like one, but if you need a budget guitar that will hold up to wear and tear, this is the guitar for you. Smooth fretboard, stays in tune well, sounds pretty great unplugged. Perhaps the only negative is that it does not sound the best plugged in, although if you get a good L.R. Baggs DI then you can help that immensely.

Unfortunately, I finally pushed this guitar too far. Due to a terrible accident, the neck cracked. Hopefully its fixable. But, I won't hesitate to look at another one of these in the future.
