While looking for a guitar for my brother for Christmas--up to $200--I went to the local Guitar Center and played every guitar in that price range. The only ones that I thought came close were the Epiphone AJ220S, and the Yamaha FG700S. All three have a price tag of $199.99. [If it matters, I majored in classical guitar in college, and own some very nice guitars--including one I built myself. I feel that I'm perfectly qualified to offer a comparison of these guitars.] I don't think you can go wrong with any of the three, but for me the Fender was the clear winner. The tone is warmer than the other two (Yamaha was VERY bright), it has better intonation up and down the fretboard, it has a louder and fuller sound, and it was the easiest to play. I also happen to be partial to satin neck finishes, so that was icing on the cake. I don't think this guitar is in the same league as Martins, Taylors, or Gibsons, but for me it's the best steel-string acoustic guitar that Guitar Center has to offer for $200 and below. I will feel proud when my brother opens this on Christmas morning.

When it arrived, everything was in perfect order, except the fingerboard. From fret #5 to 11 there were very noticable scratches and someone from the factory actually spread some wood putty filler in an attempt to hide the defects. The guitar sounds good, and so I am not going to return it due to the hassles involved. This is the risk of buying on-line I guess. The odd part is that the rest of the guitar is great. But somewhere in the production line process this guitar's neck was damaged and probably never should have been sold unless noted as a "blem". Also note, this guitar was "made in China".

Some Cons!

By Jordan T.

from Chico, CA

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

It sounded really good when I played it in the store. For me it was between this guitar and a $500 used Martin. The Martin definitely sounded a lot more full and was like silk on my hands and fingers. But I couldn't afford it so I was trying to get the a guitar that was most similar to it. Out of all the $200 guitars that I played this guitar sounded most similar. BUT the cons are that it's a little hard on my fingers and after looking closer at the guitar it seems to me like the bridge has a lot more height than usual causing the strings to space further from the fretboard. The neck is a little sticky also. Giving that this is the first guitar I bought (but not the first one I've played) I'm quite satisfied but if I had another chance to pick I would've looked a little harder. Overall a good beater though.

good deal

By greg

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I was looking for a cheap guitar and bought this. No fret buzzing sounds like most others in this price range. It's very confortable and has really full sound. I could not believe how easy the action is. I'm a beginner and the chords and notes are easier to fret than my more expensive guitar. One negative comment, the pickguard comes with a sticker that apparantly is super glued on. Guaranteed to scratch up the pickgaurd when removing it. Suggestion, if you buy this, have the store remove it for you so when they disfigure the pickgaurd, they can put on a new one for you.

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've had this guitar for 4 weeks now, and I have not had to tune it once! I play it at least 10 minutes a day. Also, there is no fret buzz.

Great Guitar even better value

By Barry Loyd

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Im not an expert player but this is a great guitar. I played alot of others in this price range but kept coming back to this one. This is not the most flashy guitar around but its not about looks its about sound. A good guitar does not have to cost a thousand dollars or even five hundred. This is probably the best in the $200-$250 range. Pick up and play the rest in this price range. You will like this one the most.

<---------- Bought Mine A Day After This Guy!

By Ben G.

from Rochester NY

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Went into Guitar Center, Rochester NY, Looking for something around $150..There was a sweet deal on another Fender for the Black Friday weekend (Sunday Afternoon), Played it, liked it. Checked out a few that I liked from checking them out on here, wasn't taken aback. Talked to what seemed a very knowledgeable salesman and showed me this thing from the description of what I was looking for. The sound is very loud, in the best way possible. I kind of was going to go with the cheaper one because it came in black, (lame of me) but the sound on this thing just is enveloping it's a lot of fun to play really. Wasn't planning on spending nearly this much either, but like I say, it drew me back. Cons as of right now: It is a bit bulky for me (short arms). something I wouldn't have experienced playing with it in the store, however, that is something I will adapt to quickly I believe. Although I had intended on getting something a bit more flashy than this (does not come with any other finish, the beauty of this thing is great. Hope this review helped, I write sincerely, go try one out, you may just see/hear/feel what i'm poorly describing.

Nice Fender Guitar

By Darius Kloska

from Dorr Michigan

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I just got this guitar last night at the local guitar center. I went originally looking at a few different guitars, but this one caught my because it looked nice and it was just in my price range. It sounds very nice and the wood is beautiful. The neck is not shiny like on cheaper guitars and plays very nice. The action is really good. Seems to stay in tune and the tuners are very nice. I was choosing between this guitar and the one found in the yamaha gigmaker deluxe pack. I chose this one because it is much prettier and alot higher quality. I have the little Martin LXM, and this gitar plays just as nice as it. I won't be taking it anywhere until I have a case. Very nice guitar and great value.

Nice guitar

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought mine in person, and I took the time to try out several guitars. The one I bought was incredibly resonant and articulate, and sounded much more balanced and lively than any other I tried. At this price for a solid-top, this guitar is a steal. If you get a good one you'll never regret it.

Decent guitar

By Matt -EnbtH

from Saint Louis

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

My friend owns this guitar. I have played it a few times though and was impressed with how good it sounded with new strings. This guitar is pretty loud and articulate. The action is a little high, I think that it could be fixed though. It lacks the depth and clarity of a more expensive guitar and the tuners are kinda cheap, but the tone is good for the price range.

Almost Perfect

By Cambo

from Midwest USA.

Comments about Fender CD-140S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

The guitar sounds great, and looks perfect with the exception of the fingerboard. On the guitar I received, there were scratches between fret #5 through #11. While these scratches are not that bad and don't affect the sound quality, it's a shame that this otherwise perfect guitar has these unfortunate defects. Would I buy another CD140-S? In a second. For the price, its a good deal albeit even with the small scratches.
