Overview

After years of painstaking research and design, the Fender Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar has finally arrived. Designed with Eric by Custom Shop guru Michael Frank-Braun, this beauty is based on a '57, and combines the best of vintage design with modern electronics technology.

The '57-style, 2-piece alder body has an ultrathin, Custom Shop-quality nitrocellulose lacquer finish that results in better resonance. Johnson opted for a one-piece, quartersawn maple neck with a 12" radius that's finished with a thin-skinned glossy lacquer and vintage tint. 19 prototype pickups were created before Johnson found the tone he was looking for. The Custom Shop-modified single coils use a new wire material and winding technique for the magnets giving them a unique, Eric Johnson-approved sound. Johnson and Braun also included one of Eric's most famous Strat modifications by wiring the tone controls to the neck and bridge pickups, instead of the standard neck/middle tone configuration of most Strats.

This guitar offers tonal perfection thanks to the discerning ear of one of the best players to ever pick up an axe. And it's pleasing to the eye as well, with its large arm contour, '57-style pickguard and shallow pickup cavities, plus thin headstock with vintage staggered tuners that eliminate the need for a string tree. Unbelievable Custom Shop-like quality in a production axe. Includes case.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

Strat Envey

By DrDave

from Kalamazoo, Michigan

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar used at a time when I really wasn't looking to buy another electric guitar. I played it in the store and was amazed but left because I'm not an impulse buyer. I came back three times and it was still there calling to me. This is the best guitar I've owned by far. It has the vintage vibe with modern quality. Unplugged, it is loud and beautiful in tone. The workmanship is perfect, with a beautiful finish (two-tone sunburst)and sexy neck. Plugged into anything it sings, notes fly of the fretboard. I took it to a jam with a few friends and I couldn't get it out of their hands. Jokes were made about thanking me for leaving them my guitar...at least I hoped they were joking. I've owned 30 or so guitars in my life and this is the 5th strat I've had. I will never sell or trade this one, it is a lifetime keeper. It has Custom Shop quality at half the price, I love this guitar.

THE Super Strat

By Dr. Gonzo the Pure...Sort Of...

from Austin, MN

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have owned many Strats in my life, from mid-70's Hardtails to American Deluxe and an American Vintage 1962 RI. Quite simply put, the Eric Johnson Signature Strat is the best Strat Fender has put out in a very long time. According to the tale, Fender and Eric spent a lot of time getting this one right, and it was worth every second! The magic is in the details. The first thing any guitarist wants is playability. The EJ is possibly the best playing guitar OF ANY BRAND I have ever played. The neck shape is supremely comfortable. There's enough wood there to get a good grip on, but not so much that it feels clubby at all. The fretboard edges are nicely rounded and produce that sweet, broken-in feel that normally takes years of wear to achieve. The frets are highly polished, smooth as silk, and big enough to make string bending a pleasure. Out of the box the action on my EJ was perfect, exceptionally low for a Strat, yet not rattly. A testament to Fenders setup was my tech touching NOTHING on the guitar except pickup height, and that was the slightest tweak. Nice job guys! Sound is always important, and if you are a single coil fan like me you will find your Eden in the EJ. These specially voiced pickups give the sweetest tones I've heard in any Strat. In fact, I'd say the give all of the best Strat sounds ever produced! From the slightly heated up bridge to the wonderfully woody neck there is not a bad sound to be found. And being able to control the tone of the bridge pickup is the icing on the cake, a mod I've done on all my other Strats, but works even better with this pickup. Finally, we all love STYLE. The EJ simply oozes sexy, vintage style. The special thin-skin nitro finish on the EJ is beyond cool, and the tint of the neck just drips with sweet vintage vibe. Mine is constantly mistaken for a 'real' vintage Strat by people who really know their stuff. I have also been asked if it is a Custom Shop Closet Classic. Simple, cool style. It's by no means a 'bargain' guitar, but the Eric Johnson Signature Strat is worth every penny. This is one guitar that you may vow never to trade or sell, and really mean it!

Could be the best strat, if...

By Fengib

from Strasbourg in France

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I've bought my Eric Johnson signature strat in Germany (less expensive than in France). Very light body, a good sustain and perhaps the best strat sound for ? non customshop guitar, but all is not perfect. First, the hum remains very loud and also a little static noise can be heard eachtime I touch the strings whith my fingers. I don't have all this noise with my other 50th anniversary american serie strat. Second, the 12 degrees radius neck is very flat (like a Gibson neck), but the vintage pickups have very high polepeaces under the D and G strings. This make their output volume not even with the B and high E strings. They sound a lot weaker than the G string, which is by far the loudest on the guitar. You can hear it especialy when you play clean. I don't understand why Fender has not made a little more attention on these details.

The one and only Thanks Eric and fender

By James

from Dearborn Hts. mi.

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have been playing for 35 years and have had all kinds of guitars. my first was a hollow bodied kingston when i was 12. I have a BluesHawk 1998 right now. For 2 years I played them all and the one I walked out with was the eric johnson (white) strat. WOW!!! you have to go and play this AXe. Bell tones that go on forever. The neck and frets are so smooth and buttery that it made me play faster and cleaner. the alder body is very lite and easy to play standing for 2/3 hours. the pickups chime in all positions. this is one great great Guitar. if you are looking for a strat and have the money for a artist this is THE ONE!!!

I've been playing for 35 years. I have owed over 60 guitars. With my Eric Johnson I have 3 stares right now. This is a special axe. There is about 4 of my past guitar's I wish I still had. This is one I want let go of. Plays and sounds like a dream. Out of the 9 guitars I have now I play E.J. the most. If you like strat's you'll love this one.

The Ej is the best Strat I ever played

By Mike

from CA

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

The Ej start is Definitely the best sounding and well built stratacaster I ever pleyed. There are some many strats right now that you can buy, but they built a good one this time. I play it not becaues it's the brain child of Fender and Ej; they just made a really good one this time.

strats rule, however this strat rules em all

By perry d.c.

from hampton ,va

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

having played strats and strat clones for many years i've finally found the 'holy grail' of these wonderfully expressive guitars. the 'ej' is by far the finest strat fenders manufactured to date. the tuners are reminescent of tuners on an old tele i owned many years ago and the volute in head stock facilitates great behind the nut bends the pickups in combination with the the thin single ply scratch plate just makes it sound so shimmery, glassy even, which is what has always made a strat so appealing to me. this is my fifth strat over a period of fifteen years, and even though i still own my highway one (though modified with a better trem block), the ej is my go to, slammin axe, one minor aggravation that i probably could eliminate if i played with less force would be the fact that the high e tends to jump the nut, but i just thread it back in and keep on wailin , i love with a capital l, this guitar...

Awesome even for non-trained ears

By Jaemin Kang

from Cumming, GA

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Well it has been 2 years since I played guitar. I still havnt got the "trained ear", which made me not be able to compare the sound between strat and a les paul. But this one, actually i could hear the difference even with my American Strat. Every time I just play G chord, I feel like a professional. Everyone should try this guitar at some point of life if you know what guitar is.

EJ Strat exceeded my expectations!

By ROBERT BOURGEAULT

from Springfield, MA

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Already owning numerous Fender Strats of all denominations (American STD, American Deluxe, Eric Clapton)I was intrigued about the EJ model after hearing Eric's spiel about the guitar on you tube. I ordered the two town SB model with maple fingerboard and have been playing it for the last month. Here are my findings. Fit and finish: I would give this 4 1/2 stars. Front of the guitar and neck finish are impeccable...on the back there are imperfections in the final coat that show spray marks...shame on you Fender!. Alignment: The first string (as you will read in many reviews) is closer to the edge of the fingerboard than you may be used to. I was a bit taken aback at first, however this has NOT been a problem for me. Action: with 5 springs engaged, the action is STIFF..however unless you are a wimpy guitar player, this should not be a problem and I have quickly gotten used to the slight extra resistance when bending strings. The stiff action, with perfect set up, supports the least buzzing I've ever experienced on ANY strat. Tone: Absolutely amazing! Each pickup epitomizes bell like classic strat tones..think Buddy Holly. However, when you crank your favorite tube amp with this guitar, it will meet all of your needs for blues and classic rock. Vibrato: Honestly, this feature is unusable. With 5 springs, you can only get a slight change in pitch and I can see the stress placed on the whole bridge assembly. This guitar plays and sounds incredible and I highly recommend it!

You will never be the same....

    By MARTY GLANZBERG

    from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Features: Outstanding attention to detail, but look who's name is on it. I mean this thing came out of the case perfect, not a thing out of place. And I checked for nearly an hour with a magnifying glass because EJ would have it no other way! The nitrocellulose finish was gummed up mildly in some areas, but as you play it and as it ages the wood sucks up the finish it wears in nicely. The smell when you open the case is a rush. It smells SOO good. Having the tone knob on the bridge pu is perfect. Set your amp and neck to as trebly as you like it, then when you switch to bridge use tone to roll off, just like EJ and it works like a dream. It stays in tune almost as well as a locking system if not equal. Quality and reliability: As close to as a custom shop as one can get in production based model, just like everyone else says. I have played and owned some amazing music-men (axis and LUKE) and their quality is excellent, this is about the same or just a tad lower. Look and Feel: Amazing. The nitrocellulose "thin-skin" is the only way to go. Extremely, extremely light alder body that sings for days. The 12" radius is cool, I really wanted this exact guitar in 9.5" radius, but the 12" you get used to really quickly, just a little harder to chord on around the nut. Soft V is what I like, so perfect. This guitar will fade, it is thin skin... but with good care it will take many years. I personally want it to "relic" to give it a personal touch, so i don't polish and clean it every time i play. Overall, look no further for a strat, unless, UNLESS: you want something very similar in the '57 vintage american. the main difference is color choices, 7" radius neck which may lead to fretting out, and no tone on bridge pickup. (other EJ things are left out obviously, like no string tree, back plate off, etc.

    Brilliant Guitar

    By Keith Cockings

    from Atlanta, Ga

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I already own an American Standard Strat. Based on the reviews I read on the web, I decided to buy an EJ Strat as well. I picked it up at my local Guitar Center, excitedly took it home, and wasn't too thrilled for the first few days. The guitar was much tougher to play than my AS Strat and I couldn't hear a difference in tonality. The tone changed in a few days of breaking in the guitar (and my ears) to where I now absolutely love my EJ Strat. It sounds MUCH better than my American Standard Strat. It is a little tougher to play due to the wider neck, but my fingers quickly adapted and am thrilled with this guitar. It is very well rounded and simply sounds just right. I've had the guitar for a few months now and I am in love with it.

    EJ Strat a Great Guitar

    By BILL CORKHILL

    from Frisco Texas

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Awesome! Needed a set up like all out of the box guitars. I wasn't able to see/play one in a GC store and had to order one without playing it. Great decision. Pups are excellent. Neck need adjustment. Find a good tech if you get one someone that has experience with vintage strats as the adjustments are a bit more complicated the the newer modern instruments. The neck is perfect if you play Gibson Les Paul's you will really like this. Over all a great value compared to Fender Custom Shop Strats.

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I chose the EJ because of the specs, the nnitro finish, the neck profile, the fretboard radius (12") and big frets. It makes it easy to switch between this and my Les Paul. The guitar is just gorgeous, the finish is perfect, and the feel of the neck is smooth, the fret ends are finished perfectly. Wonderful classic strat tones form the pickups, and I prefer the tone control wired to the bridge as this model comes standard. Because of the qartersawn neck, it does feel a little stiffer than my LP and my '52 Tele but have a floating bridge compensates for that. This the top two strats I've ever owned, this and a '57 AVRI.Stay away if you like chugga chugga because the EJ isn't made for that. If you want great clean and low/mid gain tones, this has it in abundance

    MY NUMBER ONE

    By lolo saztre

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I?ve played with friends? strats before. I recently bought this white blonde EJ for my second strat, (the other one was long gone, sorely missed ?89 Standard Stratocaster, a gift from my brother Bokchoi)? and I can honestly say that when it comes to music, this guitar can sing. The quality is excellent and the fast action of the neck is simply superior to axes I had played before. Eat your hearts out Detty and Lavro (certified Yamaha nuts). I?m holding on to 3 things in this lifetime: MBenz 560 SEC, Taylor NS74ce and my #1 music instrument, Fender Eric Johnson strat!!! Plugged into my VOX tube amp, sooo su-weeeeet! ...this is all mine, mwahahahahaha, cough cough....

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I must've played 12 guitars today. A few stand out as unique. This is one of them. The EG is a superb example of modern tech combined with "old" looks and feel. Everything from the single coils to the neck screams vintage strat. Ever wonder what kinds of sound the old strats made? What made them so famous and sought after? Grab a handful of this guitar and you'll see the light.

A classic "Real" Strat with modern features

    By Dave

    from Southern IL

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

If you're looking for a 'Real Strat' Stratocaster, one that sounds like a legacy guitar but with modern features and improvements - not some 'tweaked to the point of Gibson' 'stratish' guitar - go to Guitar Center and check every one they have out. One of them will get under your skin. The light weight body keeps things lively and the neck is a great combination of classic 50's shapes. The pickups are more strong than weak but not so strong as to lose the beautiful Strat voice. Chicks can tell when you love your guitar.
