Guitar looks great . Only problem is that it shipped without a strap, cable, polishing cloth, and toolkit which should have been included as per the packing list. Also the G-string had some serious buzz on all frets so took it back to guitar center--no techs there on Saturday, so a random employee helped fix the string from buzzing. Now I get some fret buzz during certain chords and think I will need to see a professional luthier to get it straightened out.

very poor quality components and wood

By Dano

from Delray Beach, FL.

Pros

  • That "strat" Sound

Cons

  • Noisy Tone Switch
  • Poor Quality Body Wood
  • Poor Quality Cable Jack
  • Poor quality tuners

Best Uses

  • Boat Anchor

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Incredibly disapointed with the quality of this "american" fender strat. 3 of 6 tuners are junk and cannot be adjusted to hold a tune. Wood body has cracks. 3 of 6 tone switch positions are very noisy, cable jack constantly comes loose and is noisy. The $75 Squier Strat I have set up just for slide playing has better quality hardware! I've been playing for over 40 years and have owned 8 guitars and played probably close to a hundred different guitars. This guitar is the worst quality I've ever owned, and I'm extremely disapointed with the quality of it and am returning it. DO NOT PURCHASE if you cant check it out yourself before purchasing. Dont make the same mistake I did. Fender's quality control needs some serious overhauling.

2012 Fender American Standard in Arctic White

By Neal Gold

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I waited more than a year to write a review that avoids the honeymoon flush of emotions. This is what I'd like to know if I was a working musician who's never before played a standard Strat to any basic extent: I used to take three, sometimes four guitars to gigs. Now I just take two--an acoustic-electric and my Strat. This is an obvious testament to its versatility in terms of tone, genre of music, and portability. If you have a well-designed and flexible amp--mine is a 60W Fender Concert (designed by Rivera) for example--you can dial almost ANY tone out of it, even without a Boss rig, for example. The most difficult tone is a jazzbox humbucker, but it gets REAL CLOSE, please believe me. One final point: The tuners are tremendously accurate, stable and reliable. Nothing stinks more than going out of tune during a performance...you just can't stop and retune, and string bending just doesn't QUITE hack it if you're doing any kind of rhythm chord work...never had any issues like this with my American Standard. I know I may be offending the Gods of the Guitar here, but, seriously...after having played for more years than I care to remember, I prefer this Strat over any Gibby LP I've ever played. The polyurethaned maple neck ALONE seals the deal for me.

The American Standard Strat...The Every Mans Guitar

By Jim Franklin

from Tacoma, Wa

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Just Picked up the "New" American Standard Strat. The 1st couple of things I noticed were the new pick ups sound GREAT, and there's better sustain...But what hasn't changed is what what has made the Standard A legend in the 1st place...The look, the feel, the sound, and most important the way in plays. feels like an old friend from the moment you play the 1st note. The New colors are great also, Mine is the Candy Cola red with a Rosewood fretboard. Fender took a Legend and improved it. The American Standard is still the Every Mans Guitar!

Best Quality Modern Stratocaster

By Dave Makowski

from Plymouth Meeting, PA

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar for 34 years. I have a 1987 Fender '62 American Vintage Reissue Stratocaster that I absolutely love. I have never had any luck finding a really good "Strat" until I found that one. BTW, it just happened to be the 7th Strat I owned. I sold all the others each time I thought I found a better one. I really wanted another Stratocaster but again I couldn't find one that "felt right". I went to Guitar Center for my 45th birthday and played the "New" 2012 Fender American Standard Stratocaster White with Maple Neck and Gold Anodized Pickguard. I am super impressed with Fender's quality and attention to detail. They are also very easy to reach by phone or e-mail should you need help which is a big plus. The staff at Guitar Center were great and made me feel right at home. Now the guitar is just perfect in every way. It plays great, it sounds great, and I can't find even one flaw. I set it up with .10 - .46 Nickel Bullets and applied Big Bends Nut Sauce to the nut and bridge. The guitar stays in tune even when using the tremolo or vibrato bar which has always been the main issue for me. In addition to sounding and playing great, I get a lot of comments on how beautiful my guitar is and I agree. The 2012 Fender American Standard Stratocaster is a total home run. I am super picky so trust me these models are truly great guitars. I love mine and would not hesitate to buy another one if I ever needed to. I read a review that said the Custom Shop Pickups are a 50's through back and not modern. Well, I called Fender and asked them about the pickups and they assured me they are indeed a modern pickup with a modern design. Fat 50's is just the name they chose. Anyway the middle pickup is reverse wound to cancel hum at positions 2 and 4 and the second tone control has a slight detent around 9 and when set to 10 the circuit is bypassed and you get a hot straight signal. They call this a "No Load Potentiometer". If you want a really good "Strat", go to Guitar Center and check these out!!

Is Fender Coming Back?

By Dave Rall

from Virginia

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have had many Fender Strats over the years. Pick up one made in the 60s or 70s and it will send chills down your spine. You hear this kind of quality in many classic rock bands of the era. You end up with a Fender Strat that sits unplayed. But I don't know, maybe Fender is coming back. The wife brought me this guitar home and I played and said, Wow! It was like going back. The fret board is maple and it is flawless. The action is bone chilling wonderful. You feel the vibration in the neck and against your body and you hear the resonation and sustaian through the amp. It doesn't quite compare to a 62 re-issue, but pretty darn close. Good job Fender! It's about time.

Not quite 5 Stars but very close.

By WILLIAM SMITHEY

from Sacramento, CA

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

The local Guitar Center only had one American Standard (used) to play but that was enough to send me off to the web site to buy one. Took the 15% off and "recycled" it into the Sienna Sunburst Finish - with Maple Fingerboard. Great finish and look. So it looks great, the finish is outstanding, and it sounds even better. Great pickups with just a bit of hum when one is chosen but none with any two. Position 2, bridge and middle gives that "only on a Strat sound". Kick in the hyper treble (my term, not Fender's) and there isn't another guitar I've played that has that sound - it may not be a sound from the past but it's a classic for a reason. With 3 pickups, 5 switch positions and plenty of tone control, there are lots of tone left to find. Mine could and should have been set up better. But I say that about every guitar, electric and acoustic, that I buy new. I don't fully understand paying a decent amount of money for a well assembled guitar with good electronics and a great finish gets has to be sent off to a luthier to be truly playable. That's why 4 stars. If the strings weren't nearly a quarter inch off the neck at the final fret, it would be a solid 5.

Best guitar ive ever played

By gavin coe

from Cleveland, Ohio

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This is hands down one of the best guitars ive ever played. You can switch from amazing rythm tones in position 2 and 4, to singing solo tones in posistions 1 and 5, and clapton tone at position 3. I played this thing at guitar center and immediately decided I had to buy it....it had that classic bluesy sound in the neck position, the "crossroads" sound in the middle, and a real nice crunch in the bridge, I got everything I could possibley want out of this guitar. I actively play in a band, and the last show we played we played 2 hours straight without stops, and I never EVER had to even tune the thing it was so good. My tone severly improved as well. Like I said, I got everything I wanted out of this from "master of puppets" to "hey joe" and everywhere in between. I'm 16, and am absolutely determined to keep this guitar til' I die.

Incredibe value for money guitar

By Gaston Ruiz

from Buenos Aires

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I bought a 2012 american standard strat in sienna sunburst about a year ago an it really is an amazing guitar. As soon as i picked up the guitar in guitar center to try it out, i tested the trem. In my opinion, the trem is the best feature that this guitar has to offer. It stays in tune perfectly! I dont have to tune this guitar for months. However, when i bought the guitar, i restrung it with .010s and straight away, the trem was not staying in tune. I later realized that it was because the nut of the guitar is cut specifically for .09s. This caused the strings to catch and therefore go out of tune. The next time i restrung it, i put .09s on and the trem now functions perfectly. If you want to put .010s on it, you have to modify the nut so its set for .010s. Fortunately, this isnt a flaw of the guitar, it was just my mistake. Anyways, in my opinion, this is the best guitar you can get for the money, the neck is very fast, the frets are very tidy and well done, and the sienna sunburst is just stunning. In my opinion its the best finish that fender has to offer. The sienna model also has an ash body which has a lovely grain and is very light. The overall finishing of the guitar is flawless. The only thing i would change on this guitar, is the stock tuners for locking tuners. The stock tuners are still great and stay in tune though. The pickups are also incredible. Im able to get the classic stevie ray vaughan tone very accurately. The pickups have a lovely clear tone when you used the totally clean. Overall, this is by far greatest guitar i have ever owned.

Best guitar ever invented

By John

from Reston, Virginia

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I've owned maybe 50 e-guitars including 4 other USA Fender strats (including EJ and American deluxe, etc. and teles). This one in ash is the best overall. This is easily the most versatile with useful tones of any guitar I've ever owned. Tele's will make you a better player. But the most expressive guitar ever made is the strat with a close second being the 53 esquire and 59 LP. Yes a Les Paul vintage custom is incredible although not as versatile and I started on the short scale too. Later went the PRS route and finally graduated to the tele and now the strat. I could have saved a lot of money and time if I had started with the strat. If you can only own one e-guitar make it a strat. If you can afford 3 guitars make it a strat, tele and LP. It's best to have one guitar that you really learn to play though. That's why it makes sense to buy this guitar first and last. If you don't like a strat it means you haven't learned enough about guitar playing to appreciate it.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

First, I have to say I love this guitar. I started my Fender journey by purchasing a Telecaster a few years back which I really enjoy but my music roots are deep into the classic and 1980s rock with recent interests in Blues. With that in mind, I eventually had to get a Strat but the problem was which one.

I spent pretty much a year looking and trying models because I wanted my Strat to be a keeper. After trying just about every Mexican model and some signature lines I always came back to the American Standard. The tones, workmanship and feel are what sold me. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing bad about the Mexican models...they are great guitars. I just didn't get the setup I was looking for out of them. It always came down to one thing or another. The neck was a V or the pickups were not what I was looking for or the frets were jumbo. The American had the exact specs I was wanting.

The neck is sweet with great play-ability and the pickups are custom shop fat 50s. This is a true Strat with authentic Strat sounds. The clarity and tones that you get are what sets this guitar above the Mexicans for me. Finish and hardware are extremely nice and solid. I really didn't want to drop $$$ on a guitar but it was well worth. No disappoints to speak of...just wish I had more time to play it.

Finally a Modern Stratocaster with Top Shelf Appointments

    By David P Makowski

    from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I mostly play Gibson guitars however I have owned a 1987 Fender '62 Reissue Stratocaster since 1989. I got lucky and found it used. It belonged to the stores Luthier so it plays and sounds wonderful. I had owned a couple American Standards but never was happy with the design. Now in 2012 I went to GC to check out the new American Standard with the Fat 50's pickups, high mass tremelo block, and flawless fit and finish. Mine is Olympic White with Maple Neck. The manager told me GC had received their lot of the new American Stratocasters on a Friday afternoon and by closing time on Saturday they were all sold except for the one I purchased. It was the last one. I felt compelled to write this review because playing guitar for over 35 years I can say that these new American Standards are top notch. Mine plays and sounds great plus it stays in tune even when using the whammy bar. They are a great value and have all the top shelf components. I am so happy I waited until Fender put out this updated model. It's simply a really good American made Stratocaster perfect for gigging or just jamming in your basement. I absolutely love all the upgrades and would buy another one in a minute if anything happened to mine.

Everything I wanted in a first guitar

    By Ryan Barnes

    from Yuma, AZ

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This is my first guitar. Yes I'm a noob, but I know quality. I purchased the Sienna Sunburst with maple neck. My buddy who's been playing for 13 years and only buys boutique guitars says he loves the way it feels. The setup was very good. The intonation was a smidgen flat on two strings but overall an easy tune. I love the pickups and the rolled fretboard edges. The frets are dressed very nicely, nothing to snag on sliding up and down the neck. The swamp ash body is pretty light. The custom shop fat 50's pups are great for blues, which I gravitate to. The sustain is like forever. It makes me want to practice every day. I tried a friend's MIM squire before I bought mine...yeah, no question I made the right choice for me.

Not for everyone, but perfect for me

    By David Misal

    from Lancaster, PA

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Let me start by saying that I am not usually a Strat guy... at least not without a lot of upgrades. The older American Standards, as well as the American Specials and the MIM Standards, can't hold a candle to this, with the inclusion of the new Fat 50s single coils. The problem - at least the biggest problem - is the Texas Special pickups on the Special, and the MIM ceramics on the MIM Standard. They just are not as multidimensional and complex as these Custom Shop pickups - which retail for 200 dollars on their own. It also helps that the bridge is new and improved, with a higher density and mass; the same improvements have been made to the trem block. The other great thing is that the finishing is magnificent - and not just the paint. The fingerboard is stunning, and easily the most comfortable Fender fretboard I have ever held, including Deluxe models and other high-end Fenders. The 9.5" radius fretboard is so comfortable, and bends well, even at the high frets. The edges are smooth and softly rolled, which makes moving up and down the neck a pleasure. My only caveat to all this glowing praise is that this guitar, with these appointments, definitely works best for classic rock, country, blues, etc. and not as well for stuff like hard rock and metal. There is a HSS model that might work better for that kind of thing, though I don't care for the HSS setup in my Stratocasters. The only other guitar that I would consider purchasing along these lines is the Fender Classic Player series of Stratocasters, or maybe a Road Worn one if I got a killer deal on one. As Stratocasters go, this is really amazing - a seriously professional guitar, for a serious player, at nearly anyone's price.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I bought this 2012 model w/fat 50's and couldn't be happier. I was looking for my first quality guitar and was considering several acoustic models. I sat down at guitar center and played an american strat w/blues jr and my decision was made. The specials that GC were offering helped make my choice even easier. Every guitar player should have a strat in their collection. Mine needed a set-up but thats not surprising to me. Getting your guitar set up is a good idea anyway. The maple fret board feels so nice to play on and the two tone sunburst is very nice on the eyes. Go get ya one and feel the pride of owning an American Legend!

    Gotta love Fender

    By Mark Giacalone

    from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I had a Gibson Les Paul Jr for quite awhile - rocks hard but is a one-trick pony tonally. For quite some time I have been wanting a Stratocaster for the music I am playing nowadays. Sold the Gibson, went to GC with my mind made up of getting a MIM strat and later buying all new electronics (pickups, pots, etc) for it. After playing all the MIM strats they had, I tried the American standards. The MIMs played very well in my opinion, but the American standard was just a cut above. I left with an American standard. Been playing it for weeks now. Absolutely love the tone and feel. No pickup upgrades necessary - this guitar is perfect as is. Best choice I could have made.

Quality has really slipped in two years

    By dave

    from New Baltimore, Michigan

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I opened the case and it smelled of paint. I have fret buzz on the low E and A strings between the 9th and 12th frets. Also a dead spot on the high E string on the 14th fret. I took it to my luthier, he told me that the frets were so high on the low E and A strings between the 9th and 12th fret that the only fix was fret leveling. I am not going to pay for that on a new guitar, so I am returning it. I bought a new 2012 American Standard two years ago and the quality was excellent. Very disappointing that the quality has slipped that much in just two years. The blue color is outstanding.

    Great guitar!

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

When I was younger, I thought Strats sounded too thin, and owned a Les Paul. But with modern electronics and amps, things have changed. I just purchased a black American Standard Strat w/ maple fingerboard - great look and feel! If you want the feel, you should buy an American Strat - the imports use lower-grade wood and components, and don't feel the same. I also swapped out the stock pickups for Lace Sensors to get a little smoother sound. The stock pickups have a huge tonal range. The Lace Sensors are narrower and higher output. All in all, I love the guitar.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I am a Fender Guy, and this guitar is one to to be heard!!! It came out of the box nicely set up...and tuned pretty close. She sounded awesome from the moment she went live!!! The finish has received multiple compliments, and she will always be a keepsake in the collection.
    Great job Fender!!!
