I picked up a tri-color sunburst American Std. Strat in March, 2014 after looking at 2 or 3 different models. I waited six months before placing this review to make sure I wasn't overly giddy about getting the second Strat in my life (now at age 65). The first was a early 70s model and while it played and sounded fine, my new strat with the custom shop Fat Fifties pups actually puts the old one to shame. I also have a Les Paul Traditional Pro II which is also a hell of a instrument and offers a different sound entirely. While I love them both, if I had a gun to my head to choose one over the other, I'd likely keep the strat--which is also less expensive. The sound is phenomenal and the fingerboard and frets are truly perfection. One reviewer claimed a "buzz" on certain positions of the pup switch, but I have had no such incidents and would suggest having the guitar seriously looked over. Hell, I was getting a strange string buzz on the Gibson but something as simple as nut sauce cleared that up. As far as anything looking cheap? Not a chance. I look at these two vastly different guitars and the Fender easily lives up to the fit and finish AND smooth playability it is known for and is equal to the Gibson. The Strat is also lighter and won't break your shoulder if you stand and play. A friend has an '05 Strat Deluxe with SCN pickups and I was disappointed with the sound of his guitar compared to the Fat 50s! The bottom line: if you are considering a Stratocaster, by all means, try this one out and go with the model whose pickups sound most dramatically compliments your music/style preferences. Kudos to GNC Bridgteton Missouri and Kurt for delineating the differences in all the stuff I've been salivating over! I'm a very please old coot.

Where do I begin? It's like the early years of CBS owned Fender. Lets start with the good. The color and the finish were awesome as well as the pickups, really great sound. Now the bad. Just about everything about the frets were poorly done. Sharp edges were the most problematic, but sharp burrs along the fret were also an issue. The neck was mounted slightly crooked. The nut was a complete disaster, the worst of it was the strings popped out and bend towards the tuners, which made it impossible to set up without some work at my local GC. The bridge was also slightly crooked like the neck. I have never had a guitar require so much work just to be have way playable. The volume knob was loose and the pick guard had a nasty vibration.Very disappointed and I had to return it. I have had several problems with guitars out of the box but none as bad as this. Prices keep going up and quality is going down and not just Fender but all the gang. Time to shape up money is to hard to come by to accept what's being put out to us the public. Very disapointed.

Noisy pups and dead fretboard.

By David DiOrio

from Lynn, MA

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I purchased a 2012 American Standard Strat Rosewood tri color sunburst on 8/26/2012. The shipping was quick through my GC and I had it by the following friday. I inspected it and it looks great. The color blending on the burst is great and it has a nice feel in the hands. The features are basic switches and the tuning machines are subpar; Cheap looking plastichrome. I prefer the look and feel of the older metal kidney keys on the early 70's models. The polished headstock looks like it has a clear plastic cover on it that I do not like. The frets are nice but the fretboard is to flat, should have a little more radius to it. The pups are the fat fifties and the 2nd and 4th positions are quiet and have a nice bell like sound with beef to them. I cannot use the 1st, 3rd, and 5th positions as they buzz ferociously and it will not stop, so 3 out of the 5 selections are unusable. I did get a decent price on it though, brand new with case. I have always wanted a Strat as I have a Gibson LP and wanted an extra sound but I would probably not buy this guitar again. The buzzing is annoying, the fretboard is dead, and the overall feel is as if they are duplicating some other guitars. To do it again I would try the HSS model and have N3's for the singles.

Nice guitar!!!!

By Danny Mcjunkin

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I had a 2011 and now have a 2012, I upgraded the PU's on the 2011 (SD's) the stock fat fifty PU's in the 2012 sounded better IMO. The color choice's were great ended up with the jade green and a rosewood finger board, any other time my choice would be maple. Fender has a very good selection of rosewood, fit and finish is fantastic. Very pleased!

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have owned many guitars in the past; cheap, moderate and high quality. This guitar is pricey but definitely worth the money. It's a quality instrument that feels, plays and sounds good. Many people say that there is not a difference between the made in Mexico version and the American but I can attest that there is, as I have owned both in the past. They feel and sound different.

    Great updated American Standard

    By PER ANDERSSON OHRVIK

    from Chapel Hill, NC

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I bought the Jade Pearl version which is a nice new color. The updated 50s pickups sound "hotter" and punchier in a good way, if you'd ask me. They have a really nice crunch sound, when you turn up he gain on the amp. I am totally happy. I liked the sound of the 2011 as well but this is more what I was looking for in a strat. Makes a solid appearance. I tuned it when I picked it up and two days, later after many hours playing I can't remember having needed to retune it! If there is something that I am not sure of yet is how the neck pickup actually performs compared to other strats. I have no strat at home to compare to, but maybe the 2012 is a little "darker" sounding from the neck pup. On the other hand I really like the 2 and 4 positions on the pup switch and I usually never use them on other strats. You can get a nice almost Gibson SG sound if you turn the tone knob down a glitch. At the end of the day this is a classic American made standard strat with all the traditional sound but with a little hotter pickups than they used to be.

    New Strat is a winner

    By Hans Hansen

    from Prov. RI

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

All of the improvements of the past 2 years are in this model with the addition of the Fat 50's pickups. These pups sound great, basically classic, with slightly higher output without sounding hot. The neck will appeal to most players as most measurements are a compromise, IE nut width, neck and fingerboard radii. The rosewood is good and dark - reminiscent of Brazilian stock. The paint and finishing are almost flawless. A nice well built case and some candy make this a good value overall. I have the Jade pearl metallic which would be at home on some custom cars. The appearance changes with the light, going from green with a hint of metallic to silver with a hint of green. I picked mine up at a GC showroom.

    Candy Cola Rosewood Fretboard

    By Chris Mentesana

    from Bates City, MO

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Guys, take your wife or girlfriend with you to Guitar Center!!! I went in looking for a Strat, and walked out with the 2012 American Strat off of the top rack. Oh yes. The wife looked up and seen this beautiful guitar, the guy climbed the ladder and handed it to me. We had three way magic going on. My wife looking at the beauty of the guitar, and my fingers gliding up and down the neck of pure silk. I played it through a Vox AC15C1BL, limited ed vintage amp, and again, she fell in love with the beauty of the amp, and I fell in love with the sound. What a combo. What is really amazing, I walked out with a new Amp and Guitar rig that were like a matched set, and only out the door $1600 less than I came in with. This is by far the best sounding and looking rig I have ever had in 30 years of playing several high dollar guitars (Guild X-170, Gretsch Country Gentleman, Fender American Deluxe Tele, and Taylor T5) and decent amps (Fender Twin, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, and Crete Blue Voodoo) Highly recommended. I thought about going with a Mexican Start and upgrading PUs and getting a case, but I would have still had nearly a grand in it and still had a Mexican Strat.

Finest strat I ever owned! Bought it in 2013 new at my local GC, amazing fret playability and single coil sound! Black with rosewood fretboard. Sweet! GC did my initial setup and restring it routinely, exellent service, no fret buzz or tuning issues! These medium jumbo frets with the 9 and half neck radius fit me like a glove. I have medium size hands, but be sure to play this modern C neck BEFORE you buy, because 99 percent of playing is how it feels/plays in you hand.

I have a feeling the 2012--2016 American Standards will go down as some of the best guitars ever made--at least the best Strats ever made. I just played 3 guitars from the new Professional series. Really nice but in my opinion they neither sound nor play any better that the models from the previous 4 years... And I got my 2016 MIA standard on a "flash" sale at GC in the $800's! I wanted to justify paying an extra $600+ for the new Pro series but simply could not.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Before, I owned a 60's Stratocaster MIM for 7 years (I am a Korean and bought this in Korea, before I came to USA almost 5 years ago for study). I was kinda fed up with the guitar but still loved it as well. To upgrade, I decided to try the American-made Stratocaster and to return it if it is not quite different from MIM. Hence I ordered the exact same looking guitar (3-tone sunburst and rosewood fretboard).

I tried the new American Stratocaster. It is fantastic. NO RETURN whatsoever. I heard that Fender uses the same wood and just assemble in Mexico for MIM guitars, but once you try, you will feel the difference in resonance (maybe my 60's was too old?). I personally enjoy the thick neck shape of 60's style, but perfect satin finish compensates that. In far future, I hope I can try American made 65 reissue...

By the way, the best guitar in my experience was a Fender customshop Telecaster relic, which I tried for 10 minutes at Guitar Center in Chicago two years ago in Thanksgiving. I cannot forget that feeling and I really appreciate guys there for letting me play that beautiful one.

Comes with a solid and light-weight case.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

OMG. This is my 3rd Stratocaster, the first being an Eric Clapton Signature, and the 2nd a 1974 which I had modded with Area 51 pickups from DiMarzio.
This guitar out of the box sounds great. These Custom Shop Fat 50s give crisp lows which replace the tendency to muddiness in the other 2. All 5 pickup positions give great tones, including the classic Strat quack.
My band mates hear the difference and musically inclined folks in the audience say it cuts through the mix better. And the action is much faster.
                    A steal at a grand.

Should have bought one sooner. Makes me want to get home play it!
