This American Standard Series P Bass V 5-string has a vintage body radius and contour for a classic vibe and feel. The body is rendered in premium alder for optimum tone and sustain. Its rosewood or maple fretboard features detailed fret and nut work. The neck is graphite-reinforced and has rolled edges for a broken-in feel from the get-go. HMV Bridge (high mass vintage) increases sustain, provides punchier tone, beefier looking plates and 3/8" diameter vintage saddles. String height adjustment screws have nylon patches for a tight fit that won't vibrate loose.

A 12-gauge cold rolled steel plate machined brass backstop increases mass, and enhances top end. The socket head intonation screws are engineered for a tighter fit, and are now more stable. Features new Fender design tuning keys. They work great, and are 30% lighter, minimizing neck dip. Classic 20:1 tuning ratio, cast zinc with aluminum string posts and mounting nuts, and steel clovers. Brass worm gears, steel worm drives.

With a thinner undercoat, the American Standard P Bass body breathes easier and has improved sound (more wood influence). Neck pocket paint buildup has been reduced by 40%, greatly improving the wood to wood connection/reaction.

The included SKB rectangular design case, exclusive to Fender, has TSA recognized and accepted locks. Fiberglass reinforced nylon trigger release latching system, indestructible cushioned rubber over-molded handle with flush lock out. Injection molded feet and exclusive arched stacking system.

Fender P-Bass 5

By Starbuck

from Denver, CO

I was knocking around GC looking for a new amp and trying various combinations of equipment. I came across this beauty and immediately fell in love. The sound is rich and full, virtually no buzz. It was such a joy to play, I would have bought it then and there had it been in my budget. My only complaint was the fifth string. Though it had a great tone it felt just a little too loose. All in all a wonderful bass, possibly the best 5 string ever.

5 String American Standard Precision

By Gary Thompson

from Chicago, IL

When i was a kid i played a lot of P-Basses, and they were always my favorite. They have the sound, the look, and the feel I love. I recently picked up a Tri-Color American Standard 5 String precision and I am totally in love. The neck feels great, the weight and ballance are perfect, and the sound? OMG! Nothing sounds like a P-Bass.Fender has been making this product for a half a century with very few changes. The perfect bass in my opinion.

A lovely instrument out of the box!

By P. Aaron

from Huntington Woods, MI

I was convinced I wanted either a MM-Sting Ray 5 or a Big Al V. Price-wise they were more expensive but, MM's quality speaks for itself. I ran the rack at GC several times over a 1 year period, I just couldn't get the sound or tone I wanted out of anything (as I saved dough for my 5'er)...even going beyond the MM's to GC's many other choices. I always kept the amp's settings flat, letting the basses speak for themselves. Dissapointed by my lack of enjoyment with the MM's & others, I decided to try the Precision V AM Standard. BAM! Tone, thump, vibe & a great feel within 3 notes. I kept sayin' "No Way!" Many online slagged this bass. The AM-ST. V delivered: Warmth, tone, good string spacing, vibe. I finally ordered mine: Black/w maple. Too bad rosewood was not an option for this model. It came witnin a week in a box...taped once...inside that box was a box...taped once. Inside that was what looked like a missle launcher case. Very HEAVY DUTY! My bass looked even better than the Fender website pics. Clean finish, good neck pocket fit, no skunk stripe! (the neck has a maple laminated top) My working rig is a Hartke LH1000 w/ 2-2 x 10 cabinets made by Low Down Sound, a good indy cabinet maker. Anyhow, instant tone. vibe, and a very good feel. I also liked the wider neck of the Precision AM Standard V 'cause it stays closer to a P-4's string spacing. This bass weighed in at 8.8 lbs. Only 4 lbs heavier than my 2002 AM St. Precision. The string-vibe is here! You can feel it with every note you play. These come stocked w/what appears to be D'Addairo chromes. A bright but good set of strings. I had to roll off the highs, very grindy & piano-ish but good...real good. A very nice bass for this price range. A few tweaks cosmetically: Black or tort guard. As nice as the one on GC's floor! P.S. The case locks appear to be TSA compliant for air travel. The TSA seems to make every trip one takes an issue-luggage wise. They wrecked their own locks & destroyed my TSA compliant SKB case in 2002. If you have to travel with this instrument, try & ship it with an alternate (keep your boxes for this), the TSA just wrecks stuff or worse. I speak from experience.

I didn't buy one, can't afford it yet. But every aspect of this instrument is RIGHT ON. Great feel on the neck AND body, perfect playing position on the pickup, 20-frets (!!!) and great Precision sound! What more can you possibly need? It's just right. Combined with my active J-bass, I got it all covered. THE 5-string Precision experience.

Best bass Ever!!!

By timothy carson

from Minneapolis, MN

I have been playing bass for over 15 years and this is hands down the best bass I have ever owned. I bought it at my local GC and it came set up perfectly. The neck is super comfortable and the tone rings true no matter what octave you are playing in. This bass has sustain for days thanks to the string through body high mass bridge, even the low b sounds clear. I bought the sunburst one and it is beautiful, the wood grain shows through nicely. The case it comes with is also way cool. Fender knows how to make amazing basses.
