Fender rolls out the American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar that delivers a healthy combination of modern and traditional tones at a price that won't drain your wallet. But don't let the stripped-down price fool you into thinking it's a stripped-down guitar.

It starts with an alder body, offering strength in construction and clarity in tone. The unique pickups on the Fender American Special Telecaster provide distinguishing sonic characteristics. The Texas Special single-coil Tele neck pickup delivers a full and meaty tone, the Texas Special Tele bridge pickup delivers that familiar Tele bite with a touch of warmth, and the Greasebucket tone circuit rolls off the highs without adding bass.

The subtle 9-1/2" radius maple neck, maple fingerboard, and jumbo frets make this Fender guitar very finger-friendly. Other features include an original-style Tele bridge with three brass saddles, an oversized '70s-style decal, and black pickup covers, plastic parts, and dot position inlays.

Includes a gig bag.

This guitar is amazing. After spending weeks reading reviews and trying out guitars, I decided that this guitar was to become my third guitar. Everything about it is just so perfect: the neck is slim, but not to slim, this with the jumbo frets make it a dream to play. The best things about this guitar are the pickups and the tone circuit. The pickups are incredible and work well with almost any type of music. The neck pickup is my favourite, it can best be described as sweet! I love my new American Special Telecaster; I will never get rid of it.

I bought this guitar and played it about a month before taking it back. I kept feeling like something was missing, and I realized it was when I coughed up 200 extra dollars and went with the American Standard Telecaster. The Texas Special Pickups in combination with the Greasebucket tone really limit what this guitar can do. If you primarily play country or blues, you may like this guitar, but, I would suggest you pay a little more and go with the American Standard. The bridge on the Standard, and the American Standard pickups really add some dynamics to what you can play, and really help to sustain the tone. Plus, the Standard comes with a case, valued around 110 bucks, and this guitar only comes with a 35 dollar gig bag (I paid 100 more out of pocket for a fender hard case when I bought the American Special). Also, The American Standard comes with a Fender Guitar Strap, and a Fender instrument cable. After you add all that up, the difference in the two guitars is only around 100 dollars, instead of 250. Go with the American Standard. If you like the black pickguard on the American Special, you can buy one for 34 dollars, and they are really easy to put on. Don't settle with this guitar just because you think it is the best value for an American Fender Tele... Thank goodness I took mine back and traded up before the 30 days were up.

AWESOME TELE, GREAT PRICE

By Mike

from Philly, PA

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

This new series from Fender is awesome. The finished body, 70's headstock and amazing neck. The pickups are good but I would suggest swapping out the bridge pickup, at least for me I don't like the Texas Special Bridge. I would suggest this model to anyone who is thinking about a tele or is a tele fanatic.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I just picked up one of these in Oly White a few days ago and it is leaps and bounds better sounding than the squire tele I was playing. I changed the pickguard but other then that the guitar is perfect for me. Great Tele tone and absolutly beautiful.

Great playing & sounding telecaster!

By Billy

from Newbury Park, Calif.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

Really well built and very smooth playing guitar. The tone of this guitar is GREAT! I would recommend this to anyone that is into telecasters. The Texas Special pickups are very versatile and get that crisp clean tone and when overdriven with a quality tube amp they sing! The finish on the Olympic White is fantastic too! Fender still makes great guitars.

My do-it-all guitar!

By Kaleb Romero

from Orlando, FL

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

My guitar is the one with the tortoise shell pickguard on the User Photos, and to me that just makes this guitar even more beautiful! This guitar feels great in your hands and sounds SOOOOOO good...I play many different styles, but to me this guitar shines in blues and rock. The tone is gorgeous. I own a Fender American Standard Strat and a Gibson Les Paul Classic and if I had to take only 1 guitar to a gig, it would be this guitar. I can cover a lot of tonal ground with this one. The neck pickup is warm and full, while the middle will give you a strat-like twang which I love (still full by the way), and the bridge will give you that classic rock bite. The tone circuit is fantastic as well as the volume. I can easily dial in exactly the same tone I have in my head on the fly. I play through a 90's Peavey Classic 30 (with the black speaker, not the blue marvel one) and the sound is incredible. This guitar even came perfectly setup! I took it to Guitar Factory in Orlando, FL and those guys are pros at what they do, the best in Orlando, and the guys were surprised at how well this guitar was setup, specially since it has a 3 saddle bridge system. Guys, this guitar will not disappoint you. It's more affordable than most teles and it sounds incredible! Seriously, don't think too much about it and get it...you wont regret it :)

Fender hits a homerun

By Jeff D.

from Encino, NM

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

Fender should be applauded and supported for making the Special series. I bought this Telecaster in Olympic White and it is a joy in every way. The quality is identical to my American Deluxe Strat. This guitar is a blues Monster! The hot Texas Specials easily drive a tube amp into the sweet zone. The finish is perfect and it feels super in your hands. The only things missing for the lower price are hard case, locking tuners, and strap locks. But it more than makes up for it in TONE!

Happiness is a Warm Tele.

By Bobby Light

from Durham, NC

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I walked into my local Guitar Center determined to buy a '72 Custom reissue and walked out with this one instead. The American models simply felt more solid than the Mexican ones, and an American Telecaster for this price is amazing. If you like Telecasters, you'll like this. The Texas Special pickups are great.

A definite buy for tone, feel, and quality at value!

By Raymond Wood

from Vallejo, CA

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar new just over a year ago and have continually been impressed. The tone is incredible as is without going through effect. However, running the Texas Specials through a B.K. Butler overdrive alone opens the world up on warm yet crunchy tone (a touch of Butler overdrive in any of the p/u positions will land you on the Allman Bros. tone in "Ramblin' Man" or "Melissa" as an example without having to search). The tone pot is quite responsive. I have the Olympic White and thought it looked a bit plain when I purchased (GC did not have black), but it just grows more beautiful to me every time I play it. I actually was looking for a '72 Custom (for the single/humbucker mix), and then I played this. I would put it down and go play other guitars, but I kept going back to this because this guitar (tone and, more importantly, feel) was just such a pleasure to play. It really is a guitar that makes you want to play more and more. The neck is very fast and feels like playing butter when bending and you hear the tone. The weight and balance are great, and the set-up from the factory was surprisingly dialed in (I still have not changed it, SERIOUSLY! That was how good mine was, though that may be different on yours). The sustain won't be the same as a humbucker on a Les Paul, but it will last as long as you need (particularly with just a touch of good overdrive). Even without it's versatility in incredible tone (from twangy bite on the bridge to warm fuzzies on the neck) this guitar would be great to play (to be honest, even low quality guitars set up right can just about get whatever sound you want will all the various effects and computer modeling you can throw on these days), just because it feels so great in your hands and makes you want to play more. That increases playing time and practice which increases your skills and makes a better player. My playing has improved beyond what I would have thought in the last year simply because I love playing this guitar so much (did I mention it's so EASY to play?) that I play much more and try things I normally wouldn't. The problem is that I now tend to neglect my other guitars. I know I am gushing, but while this may not be the most expensive (or best, by typical classic standards) guitar I have owned, it is the most fun to play and matches any others for both warm and bite in tones. Now, two bad marks. First, I would rather have the p/u switch up high (like on the '72 Custom) or just somewhere else so it doesn't interfere with the right hand. Second, within a month of having it, the top strap button stripped out from just normal use. I thought an AMERICAN Fender should have higher quality control than that. I called Fender about it and the guy on the phone gave me real attitude about it, so Fender's customer service can use a real overhaul in my view. However, an easy fix myself, and the guitar is a great value for the price!

American Special is an amazing guitar for the price!!! Great Value!!!

By Robert C.

from Roseville CA

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I bought my Fender American Special about a month ago and I couldn't be happier with it. I get a quality instrument at a great price. I play mostly blues/rock these days and was looking for a telecaster to add to my arsenal, a Gibson Les Paul standard, Gibson Hummingbird Artist acoustic, and a Fender American Deluxe Strat. If you are looking for a smoooth playing axe that gives you pure blues and rock tones, then I highly recommend this guitar. Thank you Fender for another fine addition to my collection.
