Fender rolls out the American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar that delivers a healthy combination of modern and traditional tones at a price that won't drain your wallet. But don't let the stripped-down price fool you into thinking it's a stripped-down guitar.

It starts with an alder body, offering strength in construction and clarity in tone. The unique pickups on the Fender American Special Telecaster provide distinguishing sonic characteristics. The Texas Special single-coil Tele neck pickup delivers a full and meaty tone, the Texas Special Tele bridge pickup delivers that familiar Tele bite with a touch of warmth, and the Greasebucket tone circuit rolls off the highs without adding bass.

The subtle 9-1/2" radius maple neck, maple fingerboard, and jumbo frets make this Fender guitar very finger-friendly. Other features include an original-style Tele bridge with three brass saddles, an oversized '70s-style decal, and black pickup covers, plastic parts, and dot position inlays.

Includes a gig bag.

This Tele is a great instrument from the Fender "Special" line. Mine is a 2012 model (according to serial number). Five yrs ago, I had a bad experience with a Hwy One Strat (another Special line) and did not like the satin nitro finish (thin and easy to mar), the 'one way' truss rod (put 10's on and you're going to have a neck bow to some degree) and the middle pickup was always on and switch gave a bad static 'pop' when switching from position 1 to 2. They must've listened to the PEOPLE this time for real. THIS new "Special" model is just that. Special! I never used to like triple saddle teles because they were never set up well and had all sorts of buzz or the action was too high, etc.. This guitar was set up from the factory right and has renewed my confidence in this type of 'vintage bridge'..They even used real brass for better tone. The attention to detail on this guitar is fantastic for it's price range. I appreciate the high gloss finish, the well manicure nut (no buzz!), stable tuners (tighten the buttons some and it'll be even better), the fairly light weight body (weighed in just about 8lbs or slightly under), neck and body are well balanced..The 25 1/2 inch scale and big 22 jumbo frets give great intonation, even on this so called 'twangy' guitar. It has just the right amount of twang without sacrificing intonation, which I'm very fussy about. I play clean..all the time.. I really know a guitar is great if it holds it's resonance against me while playing ..unplugged, acoustically. I do that with my G&L USA Strat, and I can do that with THIS Tele. Beautiful resonance...that lasts! Once new strings settle, it holds it's intonation very well. This guitar is a pleasure to practice on quietly without plugging in. It has a nice 'acoustic' sound. Pinch harmonics sound great and have a lovely Tele 'whine' (even unplugged). Frets were smooth on edges, too. I polished mine with 0000 steel wool and they're super smooth and 'slides' are fast and every note rings clear up the fretboard. Personally, I may modify electronics, but not because they are 'bad', but only because I'm curious what a different pickup configuration will offer in tone (500k pots, mini hum, orange drop capacitors, etc). I won't comment on the Greasebucket tone circuit, because I simply don't have enough info or experience with it. Great thing about vintage white color is you can get a custom pickquard of ANY type and it'll look fantasmo! All in all a great guitar for the money, I suppose asking for a hardshell case is asking too much, but I picked this one up local and didn't have to worry about shipping it in a GIG bag. If I did buy from MF, I would *invest* in a hardshell case if I could. It's definately worth protecting the investment. Buy with confidence. I am not a Fender or MF employee, btw. Just a woman who's been playing for 31 yrs, gone through 37 guitars in 25 yrs and knows what's good. :)

I bought this guitar and played it about a month before taking it back. I kept feeling like something was missing, and I realized it was when I coughed up 200 extra dollars and went with the American Standard Telecaster. The Texas Special Pickups in combination with the Greasebucket tone really limit what this guitar can do. If you primarily play country or blues, you may like this guitar, but, I would suggest you pay a little more and go with the American Standard. The bridge on the Standard, and the American Standard pickups really add some dynamics to what you can play, and really help to sustain the tone. Plus, the Standard comes with a case, valued around 110 bucks, and this guitar only comes with a 35 dollar gig bag (I paid 100 more out of pocket for a fender hard case when I bought the American Special). Also, The American Standard comes with a Fender Guitar Strap, and a Fender instrument cable. After you add all that up, the difference in the two guitars is only around 100 dollars, instead of 250. Go with the American Standard. If you like the black pickguard on the American Special, you can buy one for 34 dollars, and they are really easy to put on. Don't settle with this guitar just because you think it is the best value for an American Fender Tele... Thank goodness I took mine back and traded up before the 30 days were up.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

Picked this up after years of playing as my first "real" guitar, and was not at all disappointed! I've played on several different guitars of various monetary value and style and this could not be beat for the average mans budget. Very classic looking, and comfortable to play. Mine is modded with a Bigsby bridge and Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickups.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I posted before when I purchased my first Fender Am. Spec. Tele back in 2011. I just wanted to day that Fender has done a fantastic job of creating a slew of Telecaster models to suit every type of player. This one works great for me as I have large hands. The "Jumbo" frets work for me. The Texas Specials have Alnico V Magnets and are higher output. Love the traditional bridge. If you like 70's hard rock like me, then I strongly suggest checking out this model Tele.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

This isn't my first Tele but it's as good or better than any that I've had. The first thing when buying a guitar is do you like the looks and feel. If I don't like the looks I won't pick it up to play, pretty simple I guess but it's true. I've always liked maple fret boards and the color choices made it hard to pick. I've always liked sunburst but the blond has a special lure that I couldn't resist. I've always liked simple guitars, simple controls (ie..I've blocked the trem on my strat) and the Tele is just that, a simple, easy, no frills guitar. Once I've found a guitar that is pleasing to my eye the next thing on my list to check is the tone it puts out. This American Special Tele has tone in spades! The bridge pickup has the twang that everybody wants without being too thin and tinny (a problem I had with other Teles). When doing a lead it'll cut right through the mix. When in the neck pickup you get that nice glassy tube sound that everybody loves and is searching for. And when in the middle position it's just a perfect mix of the two. Pretty simple stuff here but it's all that you need. The next thing that I look for when buying a guitar is how the neck feels. Some teles have necks that feel like you're holding the big end of a baseball bat. Some may like this but I don't. I always compare necks to the neck on my strat and this Tele is close. It's not super thin but it's no ball bat. I have passed on guitars that the neck was just too big. Another thing to check on the neck is to make sure the frets are finished with no sharp edges, and this one passed that test. I've heard so many player say their "go to" axe is the Tele and in my mind this American Special Tele is as good as it gets. There are more expensive Teles but dollar for dollar, they aren't any better. Sure, you don't get a case but a case for a Tele isn't hard to find and you do get a nice gig bag. If you're looking for a Tele this is the one I'd suggest

The American Special Telecaster is today's best value for an American-made Fender Telecaster. Its wide and fast, satin-finished fretboard and jumbo frets, Custom Shop Texas Special pickups and vintage-styled bridge and brass saddles, make the American Special Telecaster an instant classic. If that's not enough to make you want one, then just plug it into any Fender Blackface or Hot Rod amp and get ready to hear the sounds heard around the world since 1953!
