As the owner of two Gibsons I was looking for a Strat to get that desireable Fender blues and clean tone. I tried the Mexican Standard, American Standard and American Special and picked the Special for its tone and value. I love the Texas Specials and the whole set up is just excellent. Quality parts and electronics and a joy to play. Great guitar for blues and classic rock but I wouldn't recommend for metal players. I first bought the Candy Apple red but it is more of a medium metallic red than the picture shows so I exchanged for the two-tone sunburst. Don't buy Mexican when you can buy American for just $300 more. Well worth the extra money. Thanks Fender for a great product at a reasonable price!

I bought the H/S/S model with the rosewood fretboard. Nice looking guitar, but thats where the positives stopped. First off, the guitar would not stay in tune. Nothing I tried helped (been playing & working on guitars for years, so I know a few things). Next, the humbucker bridge pickup was, to say the least, horrible. Very low output, and a very sterile tone. Not sure why Fender chose this pickup, but they could have done better. The fit and finish was good, the bridge felt "cheesy" and light, and the tuners were just awful. In my opinion, the American Specials are just a marketing gimmick from Fender. There is no way these guitars can compare to a "real" USA model Strat.

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Just the fact that I finally own an American-made Stratocaster is great in and of itself. However, owning it didn't stop there. It's actually a gorgeous guitar! I am a fan of Stratocasters since the very beginning. And when I thought I was going to the Les Paul route recently when I bought a Les Paul, I saw this amazing Strat American Special and couldn't pass up on the giant discount I got from Guitar Center. Now I am both Strat and Les Paul player.

I thought I sucked before I played it

    By Dan

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a couple of firsts for me. First Fender, first USA-made guitar. I have been playing as a hobby for about 25 years, save for a year in 1999 when I played in a band. All of my other guitars are Korean except for a Chinese bass, and have smaller frets than this one. The medium jumbo frets make playing bends & vibratto easier, and get more sustain. So far have only found 2 cons: 1.) There was a very minor scratch on the fingerboard at fret #2, but I don't mind it, and 2.) I broke 3 e strings in a row when trying to do a 1.5 step bend from fret #15 (G to A# bend). One string was a 9 gauge, the other two were 10's. So for that, now I just slide or use a different guitar whenever I want to do that. Like a couple of other reviews I read here before buying, this guitar really does play like butter. Tuning is a little weird with the tremolo, since adjusting one string will change the tension on the bridge and throw other strings out of tune, so it takes longer to switch to alternate tunings. Also the paint has a glittery sparkle to it, I expected it to be a solid red. Overall can't take any stars away from this, it is my new favorite guitar to play.

    For Me, Perfect

    By RICHARD

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I am a retired learner. I wanted an American Strat to learn on and get those great Strat sounds I grew up with. This Red beauty hasn't let me down it even has that retro Fender headstock of the 60's. The neck and fretboard are like butter on a hot home made biscuit, smooth and need no pressure to enjoy. I've been noodling daily for a while to get my calusus built up, but the action on this guitar with the jumbo frets and .09 D'Addario XL strings is so good, my fingers don't get sore for hours. It sounds amazing even through my inexpensive Fender 25R amp. Every time I put the switch in a different position or strum in a different place, the Texas Special pickups translate it into another rocking sonic treat. If you don't believe me, go to your GC yourself and try this American baby. You'll be glad you did for a price not much higher than a MIM special and should that awful time come, if you sell or trade it, you'll get most of that difference back in cash.

Made in USA value priced Stratocaster

    By David

    from Seattle, WA

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have the Surf Green MN and found mine in the South Center store. The whole look and vibe is what attracted me, I thought it was a new Am Std because it says on the head stock Made in USA and the Am Std string retainers on the head stock, there was 2 of them. I buy these retainers special for my blacktops, MIM and squire strats I have or work on. The LARGE head stock looks very cool on stage and next to my other strats in the rack. I think this is a smoking deal. If you're looking at American Standard strats then stop here add the tweed case at 119 and you're still below the cost of a new american standard. There is also one other MIA value priced strat worth looking at, the nitro satin series strat. The electronics sound good, the texas specials are very good for everything. New innovative wiring so the neck and bridge pu have the tone pots(I heard it, didn't believe it, looked and what a good idea). I wish FMIC would start wiring for 7 ways providing a button/switch/pull to turn on the bridge while the switch is on the neck providing N+B also allowing N+M+B at same time, almost first mod on every strat I have. I would also like a button/switch/pull to have switch position 2 and 4 to have a series option for 9 total pu options for a 5 way switch and 2 push/pull pots. I did make all those wiring option changes in a mint green pick guard. The aged white they used looks good, but a mint green pick guard makes this axe pop. I also used Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups in it. A surf in the neck and middle. A Texas hot in the bridge. I also swapped out the bent steel saddles for Gotoh block saddles. I just like block saddles better. so now mine is mine and it sounds as good or better than the standard texas specials. so i guess i'll put that populated pick guard in a squire or MIM strat... finish on the guitar is excellent. the neck plays very well and i pretty much love this one like the 2 other strats I have a CA red HH blacktop and a vintage tb mn '91 am std. it would be easier if it came with a hard shell case and for this guitar, you're going to want one. this is a very good value considering the price creep I've observed on FMIC products in general but especially the MIA guitars, an am std went from 1k to 1.25k this past year.

    Great American Strat

    By WILLIAM FAHRNER

    from Chatham, Ontario

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I got this on sale so it made sense. The big difference between this American Strat and a regular foreign made one is the neck material and the pick ups. I found it a challenge to play at first as I was used to my EP Les Paul Tuxedo. Due to the wammy bar etc. and the action on the strings you have to adjust the way you play your chords. It you depress while strumming, it will go sharp on you. I thought it was the intonation, but it wasn't. Just a different guitar that I had to adjust the way I played it. Love it!

Awesome axe no matter how you slice it

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Bought this guitar after doing tons of research. I made the right decision, you can't get more for your money than an American Special from Fender. The fit and finish is perfect, frets (jumbo)are perfect, it needed a slight adjustment to the claw to bring the tremlo to the 1/8 of an inch I like but that was it as far as setup went. The pickups (Texas Specials) are great, the tone is... well you just have to hear them (don't let anyone tell you there is a difference in CS Texas Specials and the production TS. They are the exact same specs, I verified this with Fender). This is a great instrument that I know I will have for the rest of my days. Go get one! I also bought a Mustang III v2 amp. SS amp but it sounds great.

    Dreamy

    By david rowe

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I am so glad I bought this guitar! It came out of the box nearly perfect in every way. I expected to have to pay a luthier to dress the frets and adjust the intonation. But the initial set-up was so close to perfect that instead of spending the time getting it set-up, I just dove in and started working on a new song and recording it. I have been playing it every day for the past two weeks, and I have been trying to figure out how Fender kept the cost so low. The only upgrade I plan to make is to switch out the tuners with Gotoh 510's to get more precision tuning. I'll replace the Fender Bullets with Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms, adjust the intonation and this guitar is a dream machine. The paint job is so beautiful that a number of my friends who have Strats are envious and wish their guitars were Surf Green with a blonde neck ... I've heard others say the same about the Cherry Red. It is ridiculously easy to play, and it has opened the door to so many sounds and styles. Kudos to Fender for creating this affordable American Stratocaster, and to the GC for their great promotional offers that made it even more affordable.

    An absolute MUST HAVE

    By Tom Polizzi

    from Hartford, CT

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I own a 2010 Fender American Special Stratocaster in 2-tone sunburst. Let me first say that the picture for this guitar does it no justice. The finish is 100 times more beautiful in person than in this picture. The Texas Special Pickups are hot and crank! I play jazz fusion, funk, and rock, and this absolutely serves my every need. If I had to choose any guitar to bring to a gig, it would absolutely be this one! The satin urethane finish on the neck is fast and soft, the 6105 frets are well-rolled and provide nice tone, and the big 70s headstock is a nice bonus as well. This guitar is great sounding, great looking, light, strong, and another amazing gift to the music world from Fender Guitars.
