I bought this guitar as soon as it hit the store! The Texas Special pickups sound great and the Humbucker "Rocks" as well. Difference between this guitar an an American Standard is that it does not have the "Bi-Flex" truss rod, just the standard one adjustment and the tuning keys are not the Fender/Shaller type. It also has the "vintage" bridge vice the 2 point fulcrum. It also has a standard unmarked neck plate vice the stamped one. Construction and quality is every bit as good as the American Standard. The Texas Special Pickups are a little hotter than the American Standard single coils and just sound outstanding. I purchased mine right out of the box and the set-up and intonation is right on to my playing preferences. If you want to save some cash and get an American made guitar, then I would highly recommend this guitar, especially if you have a high end strat that you don't want to take on the road and play on stage. In my opinion, Fender "hit the ball out of the park" on this guitar. I am not a professional or a gigging musician, but I have owned quite a few guitars including Strats, Les Pauls, Ibanez, Schecters and I think anyone looking for an affordable American Made guitar should check this guitar out!

When I first saw this I thought, "Wow, an American Strat for under a grand. SWEET !!". Ok, I just knew I had to own one, so I made the purchase, and headed home with a smile. Sadly, my happiness was short lived. First off, I'll discuss the things I really liked about the American Special. On top of the list, playability. The guitar played well right off the shelf, and with a quick set up, played as well as any higher priced guitar I've ever owned. a true gem in the playability department. Next, fit and finish. You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer guitar for the money. It looks great, fit and final assembly were obviously quality checked before the guitar left the factory. Kudos!! Now, the not so pleasant issues ... First off, tuning. This guitar ((maybe it was just mine)) was a lesson in frustration as far as tuning stability, because, well, there wasnt any. Bend a note, gently slightly shake the vibrato bar, even put the guitar down for a couple of hours and its a sure bet you will need to retune. Most of the reason (I think) is the tuners. They are horrid. They had alot of play in them (backlash some call it) and the factory installed nut seemed to have a love affair with the strings, as it grabbed them every time it could. Even a few drops of lightweight oil didnt help. The bridge ... Seemed very "light" and the vibrato arm fit very sloppily. the bridge inserts were very cheesy, and seemed like they were grabbed from the Korean parts bin. Maybe they weren't, but they sure seemed like it. Now, about the electronics ... The Tex pups ... total let down. Very weak and tinny sounding. My Squier CV60 gives a far better tone. Clean tones are weak, adding any amount of overdrive simply adds to the debacle. Even the humbucker was a letdown. Very weak, and lacking in any real tone. If I could explain the tone, Id say, a Duncan JB ... cut to half power. Bottom line, a total let down. Sure, I could have installed locking tuners, an aftermarket nut, and some new pups. But to me, being forced to immediately upgrade those items on a guitar in this price range is unacceptable. Seems like Fender simply slapped a few inexpensive parts together and put a Made in USA tag on this series just to try to appease the mid range buyer looking for an American guitar. Sadly, the idea fails, and a potential Strat buyer can get a far better instrument for alot less cash by simply looking into the Mexican Strat series. Truly a sad day for American craftsmanship.

Awesome!

By Ryan

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Amazing guitar! Feels great. Set up pretty well out of the box. I just had to lower the action a little. The single coils sound really good and the greasebucket circuit does exactly what fender says it will. The humbucker is a little weak in my opinion but is probably good for blues and jazz, just not rock.

Awesome Guitar

By Mike

from New Jersey

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I gave the American Special HSS a test drive and compared it head-to-head with the American Standard, American Deluxe and MIM Standard -- and left with the Special. It was a no brainer. The tone is phenomenal, from high gain to clean to crunch. If you like to dial in some gain, then this is your axe, because the Texas Specials are hot and break up nicely, while retaining that classic Strat sound. The Greasebucket tone pots are a great feature, and allow you to dial down the treble without adding muddiness. Even set to zero these pickups sing. And you can adjust the tone of bridge pickup! Set on 6, the bridge delivers sound reminiscent of a Gibson SG; even the neck pickup rounds off nicely. So you can easily deliver country twang, rock and blues with equal aplomb -- and nail those Gilmour, SRV, AC/DC and Led Zep licks perfectly. Pinch harmonics are good; the sustain is far superior to all of the other Strat models I tried; and it stays in tune. It was set up perfectly off the shelf, with no fret buzz, tight action and a straight, silky-smooth neck. The jumbo frets are fast and allow seemingly effortless string bends. And the best part: the price is ludicrous! The only downsides: the tremolo is so-so (I don't use it, anyway) and the gig bag is a joke. Buy a hard-shell case. There's a very accurate review from Guitarist Magazine (U.K.) that I suggest you read if you're considering this guitar. I highly recommend the American Special HSS. Give it a try before you buy something that costs hundreds more. Thanks, Fender, for making this one!

BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT ON A GUITAR and I've owned quite a few! I also own a MiM strat and i like it.But,I love my American Special Strat and would and have highly recomemded it to all my friends. I love the beautiful finish the Sunburst with dark pickguard 2 texas special single coils and a Humbucker.Great sound and feel. I can rock out, solo, strum or fingerpick and it all sounds the way you want. Better get one of theses babies while you can still get an American made Strat at for a great price.

Gimme some neck

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Fantastic neck. Mine has the ease of bending of a gibson. Plus I can switch to the humbucker for a different type of lead. I love it. Finish is great. Price is great. Our GC in Birmingham has great people. I am thrilled with the guitar, buttery neck and all.

Great sound, decent action

By TMAC

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

The sound on this guitar is fabulous. It is so clean it's crazy. However, the fretboard was the not the bestquality. I prefer maple fretboard, so it could just be the rosewood, but i really just didn't love the feel of the guitar.

Awesome Strat!!!

By Chuck Z

from Waynesburg, Pa.

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This stratocaster is amazing!! The texas special pickups sound sooooo good. Great for playing sweet blues licks and you don't lose anything when playing chords in any pickup position. The Atomic humbucker has some serious crunch. Throw a little distortion down and you can make this guitar scream. The action on the fretboard is crazy smooth. Bending strings is effortless and smooth. The '70s headstock makes this guitar look vintage. I got the 3tone sunburst and the finish jumps out at you. If you are looking for an american made strat for an affordable price, you can not.....I repeat....can not beat this guitar. You will fall in love with this guitar like I have....Well, I have to go now and enjoy this super sweet instrument!!

Great guitar.....but needs IMPROVING!!!

By rich prestia

from franklin park,n.j.

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Let me preface this by saying.....aside from the Texas Special pickups....THIS IS ESSENTIALLY A HIGHWAY ONE WITH POLY COATING!!!!!! Fender's not-so-clever marketing nonsense! That's not a bad thing....I LOVE Highway One's! This is not saying I don't like these guitars.....I do....I own one of the American Specials (in the special Olympic White finish exclusive to Guitar Center only!!)....and 8 (!!!??!!) Highway One Stratocaster HSS's. Here's my complaint. The pickups and the tuners totally S-U-C-K!!!!! Fender's Atomic humbucker is weak, toneless, and ball-less! The Texas Specials are O-K......but you STILL have that inherent 60 cycle hum that has been a thorn in the side of Strat players from day ONE!! Noiseless single coil pickups....(there are PLENTY of really EXCELLENT ones out there)...are the answer! All is not lost. This is one well built, good looking, toneful piece of wood! Unfortunately I had to sink another $300.00 into the guitar in pickups, tuners, and saddles to get where it is actually PLAYABLE to me; as I did with ALL of my Highway One's!! I'll be honest....NOW...I will proudly put ANY ONE of my guitars up against a Fender Custom Shop guitar!! By all means...buy this guitar! But if you're like me....and you want a bit MORE out of your guitar....meaning.. NOISELESS performance and a excellent humbucker sound....you'll have to put a couple of dollars more into it! Get one.....and 'do it up' YOUR way...with YOUR choice of premium pickups and such....you'll have a GREAT guitar

Great Guitar And Great Value

By simon birt

from Florida

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I took the black option and it looks great. The sound and tone are versatile and easy to set up from the switch positions. Nice to play with a fast neck and large frets. Terrific bending and easy to play. The Humbucker pickup sounds smooth and easy as you'd expect evoking sounds from the 50s and 60s, Jazz and Blues. The Texas Specials are bright and aggressive for perfect guitar attack. All in all this guitar has it all. You'd really need to be picky to find a reason to buy another Fender Strat, unless you just like owning lots of them. If you had to go fir just one this is hard to beat for the money and will last me for a long, long time.

Unbelievable Strat

By Ray Merriman

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I record Blues/Rock, and was quite satisfied pumping my standard Strat through my V32. Until I bought this guitar!! This Strat screams. Really gutsy tones and gives longer sustain than my Gibson RD did. Neck is really smooth and fast. And you can't beat the vintage headstock. If you use a tube amp, please give this guitar a listen. The three tone finish is gorgeous and the black pickguard and knobs make this one mean looking machine. And come on, you just can't beat this price for an American Strat.

Almost Perfect

By Dave

from Chandler, AZ

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I'm picky, so I hate to admit I can't give this one 5 stars. The neck is great with great feel. The Texas Specials are just awesome, and while I am not usually an atomic fan, I will admit that the greasebucket tone circuit real tames the pickup in the way I'd prefer. The stuff that keeps that 5th star off my review is the fact that the bucker is not my first choice, the Jumbo frets (while they provide excellent feel) can get buzzy, and the fact that the body is made from 4 pieces of Alder just rubs me the wrong way. I know it is a cheaper American model, but still, I think 3 should be the limit when I shell out this kinda cash.

American Strat

By chris vasquez

from Houston TX

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar to add to my arsenal. I prefer Fender and Gibson guitars, and I have always wanted an American Strat. to replace my Mexican Strat that I gave to my grandson. Beautiful guitar with a more direct sound. It will give me a more distinctive lead than my Les Paul for certain songs. It also is lighter in weight than my Les Paul or Gibson SG. Definite guitar to have. Instead of only single coils it is excellent to have humbucker capabilities. I prefer rosewood over maple because of sound and aging. Also there is more value in rosewood fretboards.

Great fit and finish

By Peter Rorie

from El Paso

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar about a month ago, while at the same time buying my blackstar club 50 half stack. I know it sounds like a weird combination; I really bought the amp for my Les Paul Studio Silverburst. I bought this guitar because I wanted something for the cleaner sounds, but decided on the HSS for the "growl" of the humbucker. This guitar doesn't disappoint. I thought it would just be a nice addition, but wouldn't get much "play time". -How wrong I was! ..I love my Les Paul;; but,, really--this is one VERY nice piece of equipment. I find myself walking around strumming away strapped on like some security blanket. With the Les Paul, I worry about scratches and dings, like it's some museum piece. The strat feels like a real "workhorse"--like a real players guitar. I love the killer looks, great neck, FLAWLESS fit and finish & the cool retro headstock--and American too?--this purchase is a no brainer!

Tuning = nightmare

By Robert Obogeanu

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

First let me start with the facts: I had the guitar setup 3 times (3 different techs - two from Guitar Center) last one being done at a famous guitar shop in LA where I've been told that there is nothing wrong with instrument and the setup is correctly done. The main reason I took the guitar for setup was TUNING and I strongly believe that for an 800 dollar instrument this is UNACCEPTABLE. So after having the setup properly done, to my frustration and disbelief I realized the the main issue still persists - just bend the vibrato bar only once and the guitar is totally out of tune! On the other hand, even though the guitar is in tune I find myself adjusting the G string over and over again because on different chords the A note just doesn't sound like an A (and sure enough I used the tuner over and over again to check and it's way off even though on the 12th fret I get an almost perfect G). I'm not sure if it's just my particular guitar or the fact that it has jumbo frets but overall even though the sound is awesome I cannot get past the fact that it became a lesson in frustration in terms of tunning. So before you buy make sure you spend at least a couple of hours with this guitar and make sure that it is exactly what you want. For me is a letdown.

Nice guitar, tough buying experience at the store

By Tyler Saure

from Brookfield, WI

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I think this guitar is very nice, but I am wondering how long it will take to settle. I had it completely set up 2 weeks ago and the action is very high again. It will need another going over. I hope this isn't going to be a regular 2 week event. Not thrilled with the jumbo frets. I wish I had one step smaller. Now for the buying experience. I played several guitars in the store before settling on this one. It was my fault for not carefully inspecting it, but should be equally shared by the store. The guitar I got was the one off the rack and had some surface damage, the back cover was missing and the gig bag did not have the shoulder straps and the microfiber cloth was missing. Bottom line; it was a used guitar. When I called back, I was told that this is the way it is; this was not a mass produced guitar and people just aren't educataed to understand this. I asked them to find a new one and was told they would try but not likely. Less than an hour later I received a call and they realized they had received "A shipment" of them and I would have a replacement in 3 days, which I did. I paid to have it set up completely. I was surprised to have to pay to have a new guitar set up considering I bought my acoustic at another merchant and not only was set up for free, I could bring it in free of charge as many times as I liked in the first year to have it checcked out and reset. Other than that, it's a nice guitar.

great axe

By Terry Summers

from Woodbury MN

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I've spent most of my life as a Gibson guy. I used to have a tele and liked the single coil Fender sound for some applications. This guitar is incredibly versatile with great feel and a fast neck. All three pick ups have a clear classic sound that I'm in love with. It's replaced my Howard Roberts Fusion as my go to axe.
