I bought this guitar as soon as it hit the store! The Texas Special pickups sound great and the Humbucker "Rocks" as well. Difference between this guitar an an American Standard is that it does not have the "Bi-Flex" truss rod, just the standard one adjustment and the tuning keys are not the Fender/Shaller type. It also has the "vintage" bridge vice the 2 point fulcrum. It also has a standard unmarked neck plate vice the stamped one. Construction and quality is every bit as good as the American Standard. The Texas Special Pickups are a little hotter than the American Standard single coils and just sound outstanding. I purchased mine right out of the box and the set-up and intonation is right on to my playing preferences. If you want to save some cash and get an American made guitar, then I would highly recommend this guitar, especially if you have a high end strat that you don't want to take on the road and play on stage. In my opinion, Fender "hit the ball out of the park" on this guitar. I am not a professional or a gigging musician, but I have owned quite a few guitars including Strats, Les Pauls, Ibanez, Schecters and I think anyone looking for an affordable American Made guitar should check this guitar out!

When I first saw this I thought, "Wow, an American Strat for under a grand. SWEET !!". Ok, I just knew I had to own one, so I made the purchase, and headed home with a smile. Sadly, my happiness was short lived. First off, I'll discuss the things I really liked about the American Special. On top of the list, playability. The guitar played well right off the shelf, and with a quick set up, played as well as any higher priced guitar I've ever owned. a true gem in the playability department. Next, fit and finish. You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer guitar for the money. It looks great, fit and final assembly were obviously quality checked before the guitar left the factory. Kudos!! Now, the not so pleasant issues ... First off, tuning. This guitar ((maybe it was just mine)) was a lesson in frustration as far as tuning stability, because, well, there wasnt any. Bend a note, gently slightly shake the vibrato bar, even put the guitar down for a couple of hours and its a sure bet you will need to retune. Most of the reason (I think) is the tuners. They are horrid. They had alot of play in them (backlash some call it) and the factory installed nut seemed to have a love affair with the strings, as it grabbed them every time it could. Even a few drops of lightweight oil didnt help. The bridge ... Seemed very "light" and the vibrato arm fit very sloppily. the bridge inserts were very cheesy, and seemed like they were grabbed from the Korean parts bin. Maybe they weren't, but they sure seemed like it. Now, about the electronics ... The Tex pups ... total let down. Very weak and tinny sounding. My Squier CV60 gives a far better tone. Clean tones are weak, adding any amount of overdrive simply adds to the debacle. Even the humbucker was a letdown. Very weak, and lacking in any real tone. If I could explain the tone, Id say, a Duncan JB ... cut to half power. Bottom line, a total let down. Sure, I could have installed locking tuners, an aftermarket nut, and some new pups. But to me, being forced to immediately upgrade those items on a guitar in this price range is unacceptable. Seems like Fender simply slapped a few inexpensive parts together and put a Made in USA tag on this series just to try to appease the mid range buyer looking for an American guitar. Sadly, the idea fails, and a potential Strat buyer can get a far better instrument for alot less cash by simply looking into the Mexican Strat series. Truly a sad day for American craftsmanship.

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Ive had enough of this guitar. It just not good, and it took me 4 years to understand that. It sounds good, yes. Like a fender strat should, but it just has to be maintained all the time, and set ups dont last, and the intonation is always bad. I wish i bought a standart in first place. Dont make that mestake, dont settle.

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I've playing for over 50 years. Have owned about everything out there. I have an American Roadhouse Strat w/ Texas Specials (2000). Love that raw, nasty tone! The Atomic Humbucker on this bad boy! It's not a Duncan , EMG, DiMarzio. Just a mean p/up!! For me, it's priced right, feels right, sounds right. Guitar playing is like driving a car. Make it do what it's supposed to do!! Oh yea, love those jumbo frets!! Been doing business with MF for about 15 yrs and never been disappointed!!

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Like the looks of this guitar and fits the lap and feels good in the hand. But thought the strings too high off the fret board, and what others get out of it with their amps on the web doesn't do the same here with my amp or peddles for some reason. Just seems With Out Deep Tone for a guitar of this price that I think it should. Wish I would have bought a reg. American Standard. Maybe it will break in in time. Who knows?

    Best Value Ever

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This instrument is everything a semi-pro, serious amateur could ask for. I have 8 other guitars including a low priced Squire dedicated to a Roland GR Synth, but this was something I wanted for years... just could not find this package anywhere until recently. Balanced, smooth, easy playing, fantastic sound from any of my 3 amps, Peavey Studio Chorus 210 or Marshall DSL-40 or Fender G-DEC-30. Finish and fit are perfection. Got the vintage Fender Tweed case for this baby to round out the prize. This guitar looks great, plays great and makes me feel like a rock star! Well done Fender.. thanks for the great value! WR

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Added this beautiful American Stratocaster to my collection. This guitar rocks right out of the box. It came already set up, strings are a little high for me, but the way it is set up the strings bend beautifully and harmonics are perfect . Great job Fender. It came with fender light ga. Strings and the ga. I use 9 /. 42 the humbucker gives it a special sound of its own. I got the fender black tweed case with it also. I wanted this baby to have the best. It will be my new regular guitar. Sounds so much better than my other Strat. This is the best felling neck I have ever held in my hand really smooth and the jumbo frets are awesome. Love it!!!!!!!! I got the sunburst.

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I had to get rid of the greasebucket tone circuit and revert back to American Std wiring with the rear tone control for both middle and bridge pups, which was very simple. After taming the mids of Texas Specials by lowing pickup height and balancing the sound with the humbucker as well as putting on 10-46 strings, this rig rocks and is extremely versatile.

        Very Acceptable

        By Jess Wilson

        from Knoxville, TN

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Played great right out of the box. Neck is great (although I wanted to get it in Maple but option was not available). I own many guitars including a Mexican Strat and this far exceeds its Mexican brethren. Action is great and pickups sound really good out of my Vox. The fretboard tends to leave my hands dirty after playing though that could be the factory strings, only had it about 3 days so we'll see. no complaints other than it could have come with a hard case but for an American at this price I'm not going to be too picky. If your looking for a great guitar at under a grand this is it unless you buy used.

The fit and finish is excellent. The neck is one of the smoothest I have ever felt and I love the jumbo frets and large head-stock. If you want a high quality US made strat consider the American special.

Comments about Fender American Special HSS Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This Strat has all of my favorite qualities - brown/black sunburst finish, rosewood fretboard, jumbo frets, large headstock, and a set of overwound pickups. I saw this one, and just had to make it mine. It arrived via UPS set up nearly perfectly with 9's - which i quickly broke. After a quick re-string with 11's and a few accommodating set-up adjustments, this guitar plays beautifully! The Texas Special pickups sound killer, the neck feels great, and the frets are fairly well dressed. The thing stays in tune just fine - even after hours of string bends. Cosmetically, the body, neck, fretboard and headstock are all absolutely flawless. It is definitely giving my 2006 American Stratocaster a run for its money! Having a really hard time putting this thing down. Had it for a week now, and there are absolutely no regrets. Another great purchase from Musician's Friend - and another very satisfied Strat player!
