I spotted this at the store and couldn't stop staring, the finish is devilishly gorgeous. I hoooked it up to every bass amp that was there, ranging from an Ampeg combo with a 15 inch speaker to a Gallien Krueger combo with two 10 inch speakers. Through every amp, it sounded great; I couldn't get a bad sound out of it. I messed with the tone and pickup volume knobs a lot and I could only get good sounds; the P/J pick-up combination is great. The neck felt very slim and fast, the body was light and well balanced, and like I said, it was a gorgeous bass. At not too high of a price, I am definitely going to add this to my collection soon. One last note: there is a little removable plate on the back that seems to be made for batteries, but the electronics are not active. I was just a tad confused about this, but it has no effect on the greatness of this bass.

This Bass was not what I had hoped but I also own a Fender USA Jazz and a USA P-bass. The aerodyne doesn't live up to a USA fender and quite frankly I have played a Mexican Jazz bass that played better. I originally bought this bass because I needed an inexpensive bass to take to jam sessions and places where my expensive basses would not be appropriate. I wish I would have played the bass before buying it but the good reviews here convinced me to take the risk. The Good thing about the bass is the weight, It is nice and light but a little too light in the neck. The action was set too high for my taste and had to be taken care of right away. The sound of the bass is actually good it has a lot of tone flexibility. I set my volume and split coil pickup on 10 and my single coil to 8. This setting gives a good happy medium between a jazz bass and a p-bass. A good amp is also required for this bass as I some times feel the I have to play this bass harder than I do my other basses to get a good sound. Other post suggest replacing the single coil pickup. Another issue I have with the bass is the Stratocaster style 1/4 inch out put on the front of the bass. This output style doesn't play nice with high end bass cables especially if they are angled. This is a great bass for the beginner that wants to go intermediate. Its not the bass for professionals who do big shows or record.

wonderful bass

By Very happy Jeff

from vandergrift, pa.

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

Due to my apprehension toward playing a long scale bass, I have had a long time fling with short scale basses. My wife bought me a used P-bass for Christmas and I found it to be very satisfying to play. I spoke with my usual salesman at guitar center and asked his opinion of the Aerodyne J-bass. He spoke highly of it and I purchased it after playing it. I had flat wounds installed and a set-up prior to taking it home. My new Aerodyne has become a favorite with the band and myself. I play thru a Fender TV 15 Bassman amp and the result is incredible. Truly a fantastic instrument and a terrific compliment to my P-bass. Luv 'em both and my apprehensions of long scale basses has disappeared along with my short scale basses!!! Great bass, Fender.

Best Bass I have Ever Played

By DaiChurch

from Denver, CO

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

I have done considerable amounts of research trying to find the best bass for me, and I play nearly everything. I've tried everything from the Fender P-Bass to the Schecter Stiletto. Then I stumbled upon this guy. The Fender Aerodyne caught my eye with its sexy blue Maplewood body & matching headstock. Alright, now this bass looks good but it sounds even better. With the jazz and precision bass pickups you can pretty much get any tone you want for any style you play. You can slap & pop with the great jazz tone and then you can tune down to C and get a brutal metal tone. If you want a bass that can do anything, and can do it well, I highly recommend saving the money up and getting this bad boy. You won't be disappointed.

Amazing Bass

By Jabsco

from Wilmington, NC

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

I have owned this bass for years. I first wanted to own this bass because of the light weight and low-profile, but kept it for the killer tone. The split J/P pick-ups allow for a wide range of tones and with a little bit of overdrive is great for garage rock. If anything ever happened to this bass, it would be replaced by another one in short order, it's just an amazing guitar. I would recommend this bass to any bass player.

Fender Aerodyne, a very cool bass

By cmackg

from Washington, DC

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

The aerodyne is a very nice working bass -- the P/J format gives lots of versatility, while the J-bass neck is smooth and fatigue-free for long-nights of gigging. I've been playing my Aerodyne live every weekend for the last year or so, and it does great. I replaced the jazz-pickup with an Aero Instruments J-bass 4, the stock one was really weak at top-volume. The Precsion-style neck pickup is meaty and drives the bass when I wnat it. My only nit to pick is the chrome-stuff they treated teh bridge and tuners with, it haws started to rubb off. I use this bass hard, slap, funk, classic rock, and it stands up. Great value and it looks lreally cool on stage.

An Awesome Bass for the Price

By BassBob

from Sacramento, CA

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

I had always been skeptical of Fender since I started playing bass. The weight of them had always been a turn off, playing a heavy bass with a bad shoulder was something I had to consider. Then I saw this beauty in Guitar Center and I had to try it. My first reaction was surprise at how light it was. After I pluged it in I was blown away at how deep it sounded, definatly not what I would have thought from such a light bass. After playing on it I knew I had to take it home. The neck is smooth and fast. The pickups give a decent amount of tone choice and playing it through my ampeg setup it was the best sound that had ever come out of my garage. Later it was put to the test in a full rehersal and it blew everyone else away. I use many effects (chorus, distortion, wah) and they really shined and the bass came through sweetly. When taken to a gig it was always nice to have people come up afterwards and compliment on the bass. Cons: The finish is a pain to keep clean, but worth the effort The bridge shoud be replaced with something like a BadassII, the stock bridge is cheap and can cut your strings Pros: Great selection of Tone Great Value Nice neck Light weight

Amazing Bass for Every Player

By Shawn

from Warren, MI

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

This bass can be summed up in one word. Fantastic. The neck is perfect. Not too slippery and zero friction moving your hand around it. You can play it for hours and not have any cramping up. I'm a guitar player turned bass player for my band, and of all the guitars I own, this neck beats them all. The action comes pretty high, and the strings Fender ships with it are really snappy, so while I've been playing it as it's been set up from the factory your play style might require some adjustments to the action. The body of the guitar looks even better in person than it does online. Only problem with the finish is that it collects every bit of dust and fingerprints you can imagine. So keep a cloth handy to keep it clean. But when it's cleaned up I can't think of another bass that looks this good. The black strat output jack is actually more than just for looks. It makes plugging in much easier, and as someone who steps on his chord too much, it holds the chord in place when you get crazy on stage. The guitar as a whole is so light I forget I have it strapped on sometimes. So if you're worried about Fender guitars being too heavy, this one will more than surprise you. And the best part being that it doesn't affect the tone at all. Which also is especially unique with the P/J pickup configuration, making the guitar have a very versatile range of tones and sounds. One thing I'm still getting used to is the lack of a master volume knob. Which is awkward for live play having to turn down two knobs to shut off the volume, and putting it back where you had it can be difficult with a lack of indicators on the knobs aside from a single indented line on the smoked chrome knobs. Overall this guitar is sleek and simple. The black headstock, stained neck, and body combination is just so unique and beautiful to look at, and no other bass really compares. Overall feel and tone of the bass is just second to none. Feels like it should've been way more money that $800. It's light on your back and shoulders and can be played for hours straight. Paired with my Fender Rumble 200, the tone is perfect for my style and others who've played it. I can't think of any other bass out there that has this kind of total package appeal, with the look, feel, and tone departments all head and shoulders above the rest. I love this bass, and as an active gigging musician, this is the only bass I need. ***WARNING*** I'm not sure if this is a common occurrence with these basses but as it states it's online only. And with that guitar center makes you pay for the full amount up front to order the bass. I ordered the bass in early February and didn't get it til almost April. This would not have been a big problem had guitar center not told me it would be available for me for my gigs both in February and early March. Guitar center pushed back the date on me at least 8-9 times. It got to the point where I was ready to cancel my order because neither the local store nor corporate could give me a straight answer as to what the delay was about. So while his bass is amazing and I'm happy it's here, the anxiety and stress of whether the bass was coming or not every 4-5 days for almost two months was not a fun time. I was also told people had been waiting months for it. So be advised, it could take a while to get to you.

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

This is a great bass. Very light weight but very deep bass tone. The neck is super fast. One thing that I'm going to replace is the bridge with a Babicz Full Contact Hardware bridge. The Fender bass bridge is cheap & doesn't setup well.

Bad to the Bone !!!!!!

By Kelly

from Small Town - S.W. Mo.

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

For years I have played my 1989 G&L Bass which I still am very fond of, but due to numerous neck and back injury's in the 70's and 80's (Long Story), I began to feel the repercussions from them! So I went looking for a light Bass to perform 2 hour straight through concerts with. I went through 5 different Basses ( Ibanez, Gibson, Yamaha, Schector ) trying to find one that was of great quality and had no problems of any kind out of the box! These were not cheap instruments and were supposed to be pro level goods. NOT! I had noticed the Aerodyne Jazz Bass while sifting through various Basses but shied away from it due to the fact there were no fretboard markers only side dots. I also hadn't noticed how light it was or the fact that it was "Made in Japan"( a big plus ) until I began researching it. I will now get to the real point of this review, This Bass is nothing other than PERFECT in EVERY way. The quality surpassed most American made Fenders at 2 to 3 times the money! It plays like a DREAM, It SOUNDS incredible, I can hardly tell I have it hanging around my neck!!!!! and last but by no means least IT IS BEAUTIFUL! As a matter personal taste I have put a Babicz Bridge and Aguilar P/J pickups in it with DR Markus Miller MML 45-100 strings on it. But as I said this was just my thing Stone Cold Stock was great! Really no need to spend more money on it. "I just wanted the personal touch" ( YOU WON'T REGRET BUYING THIS BASS! ) I also purchased the Jazz Bass Case for it ( Item # 541533 ) it fits like a glove and you real need it to protect this GEM!

Best. Bass. EVER!!!!

By Kaler

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

I own a 1996 Fender P-Bass Deluxe, and i've played almost every other brand of bass. This is by far the best bass i've ever played. It blows every other bass completely out of the water by a long shot. In played every other bass at my local Guitar Center, and the only thing that came close (and it was still a LOOOONG way away from matching this bass's epicness)was a Schecter Stiletto costing three times as much. My advice: buy this bass right now. It's totally worth every thin dime you spend on it.

Found this bass as my second. Much greater in every way to my starter bass and most basses owned by my local betters. The dual P and J pickups do a number on any sound your looking to achieve. I've used it to play similar style from Reel Big Fish to Victor Wooten.

A Ricky Player Digs This Bass

By An Aerodyne Player

from Lincoln, CA

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

I have played a 1978 Rickenbacker 4001 for most of the 26 years I have played the bass because tone and looks are everything and there's nothing like a classic Ricky. So when the day came when I had to sell her due to some financial hardships, I didn't think anything else was going to matter much. Never cared for Fender basses either since my first bass which wasn't an actual Fender J bass but was an exact copy of it. The P bass is pretty basic, no upper range, sounding while J basses all seemed to lack the bottom end. Then I saw this baby. First off, the jet black finish with cream binding and zero fret markers caught my eye immediately. Then came a trial run. I could get the bottom end of a P bass and blend it with the crispness of the J bass single coil. Loved it the first minute I played it even though it needed some attention from a setup guy. Unfortunately I couldn't buy it new because of price but scraped up enough to buy one almost new for less. Mine is the original style with the jack in the usual place just below the tone knob. It rocks. I can get everything I used to get from my beloved Rick and then some. I really love the feel of the neck too. This is one great bass. If you can get one, do so. You will not regret it one bit!

First off, this bass looks amazing. It just has a really cool look to it. It is also versatile having the P/J confit and it sounds good with the J Bass body. The neck has a satin finish which I really like, it is extremely playable. Another plus is this bass is very lightweight having the contoured bound body so you can play an entire gig and not Be bothered by shoulder or back pain.

    By Kevin

    from Pekin Illinois

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

Got the black Aerodyne as a backup to an american standard Jazz. Reason why? It's a real eye catcher with the body binding, smoked chrome hardware, Strat-type cable jack and the added benefit of the P-bass pickup. Being able to dial in "that" sound is what sold it. I think this one could be a collectors item someday.

    better than expected

    By scott griswold

    from cape may, new jsersey

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

The Fender aerodyne is about the most viauallly stylish 4 string bass instrument on the market and I wanted something light since my first real bass was a Ibanez SR 500. The only two negative issues for the aerodyne which other reviews wrote were that the pickups hummed and the stock Fender bridge was set into a carved-out depression on the top of the bass making upgrades impossible. My Fender Aerodyne was built in 2008 and there is absolutely no hum at all. I play a Markbass 102P combo and even when sitting on a chari directly in front of it, zero hum. As for the second issue, the more current designs of the Aerodyne do not place the bridge into a cavity, but is screwed onto the top of the surface. Now, if I want or need to upgrade to a more sophisticated bridge, it is a simple matter. The guitar is gorgeous. Wonderful finish. The 1.5 nut width is the same as my skinny Ibanez though the Fender neck is somewhat thicker. The only negative, and it is a small one, is the pickup-sound is a little thin when played through my markbass 102 P in the FLAT setting. I can eq the amp to fatten the sound. At some point I might put on a P/J set of Bartolini's (passive) All in all I would replace this guitar in a heartbeat. Great price, Great fit and finish (MIJ).
