Sweet deal

This thumbrest does its job. Installation was easy, Fender provides you with a diagram for either pickguard (P or J). Took around 5 minutes tops to install including drilling.

Thumb rest

I have bought these for each of my basses. I found that resting my thumb on the end of the pickup was uncomfortable. The thumb rest is larger and much easier for longer periods of playing/practicing. I only wish that there were a variety of color choices, thus the four star rating. Fortunately the black goes very well with both of my basses.

If you are installing as a "tug-bar"...

I got this and installed it as a "tug-bar" instead of a thumbrest (ala 60's Jazz Bass). The original placement for this piece was below the G string so that you had a place for your fingers while you played with your thumb, which is how bassists who were used to playing double-bass used to do it. It was moved above the E string as a thumb rest in the 70's, and discontinued in the 80's. The only issue with this item is that the template it comes with only shows the placement for the thumbrest, and not the tug-bar. You either have to eye-ball it (there are lots of detailed pictures on the web so it's not too hard), or better yet, get the '62 Jazz Bass pickgaurd which has the tug-bar holes already drilled for you (the pickgaurd works on both american and mexican j-basses). The latter is the better way to go. If you go down the new pickgaurd road, it also has the pickup cover holes pre-drilled too, so you can go all-out and get the metal pickup cover for that total vintage vibe. Either way, you're going to have to break out the drill, so be sparing in how far you go into the body. A quarter inch is all you need.
