  • Nice tube tone, usable amp modeling

As reviewed by Chris Schalick on 3/21/2012

Very usable tuber. Just a couple pet peeves, one sound, one build, neither one makes me regret purchase. I have an 80's vintage Super Champ and if you are wondering, this is a different animal. The tube tones deliver a sweet ride, the thing is easy to carry around and the amp models have more settings out of the box than I need. I like it a lot but ain't in love with it...yet. I gig with this paired with the 80's Super Champ and I use the champ, bassman, and deluxe voice settings. I have a multi-effect amp modeling pedal that had me very skeptical of modeling and maybe it's the hybrid thing but the models in the X2 sound very natural to me. This amp with a full range cabinet has more low end than the 80's model, rounds out the mids and highs of the 80's amp and the two 15 watt amps come across like a much bigger amp. For me this is enough for most clubs, just one wasn't doing it without mic-ing. One reason I didn't give this 5 stars is the clean channel doesn't use the master volume. The 80's amp master volume rules all settings - clean, mid-boost and lead. I like that, a lot. I use the 80's clean channel with the gain up around 8 a lot and use the master to bring volume up and down. It gives soft, tuby distortion when you hit the strings and warm, clean sounds when you don't. Leaving settings the same but pulling mid-boost gives me a nice Stones-ish distortion and the lead channel puts it up over the top. Can't do that with the X2, at least not the way it's delivered. The clean channel on the X2 breaks up nice when cranked, but only when you're using most of the 15 watts - great for a club but for me means practice settings and club settings are different. Maybe there's a way to set that with the programmable feature. Observations on the amp build - the box, handle and exterior feel solid but the knobs feel cheap and plasticky to me. When I touch the the knobs I feel like it's a toy and have to remind myself I'm getting the tube sound, portability, etc I want.

  • Great little amp, worth 2X the price!

As reviewed by John Titanski on 7/30/2012

I've been playing guitar for almost 25 years, I am not a pro, but just a casual player who likes to play covers, and write and record some of my own music. I play mostly blues/rock. I normally play two different guitars through this amp, a Fender american select mahogony body strat, and an epiphone flmaetop dot. I prefer mostly a clean sound, with a little gain/od and reverb, which this amp is perfect for. I have yet to setup the fender fuse program and change any of the settings yet, but out of the box I find the old fender amp models to sound really good, but I don't really use any of the higher gain voicings. I wanted a low watt, affordable tube amp for that tube sound that has a natural sustain and reverb that you just can't get with a solid state, even with amp models. Well this fit the bill, and them some. For the price, paired with the SC112, it really is a bargain. Real tube tone, with so many extras, you just can't beat the price. I highly recommend you try one of these out, and if you order one, don't worry about shipping. These came to me in some of the toughest cardboard boxes I have ever seen, and well packed, so no worries about damage.

  • Terrific studio/recording amp

As reviewed by Donald Arney on 12/9/2013

I had one of the original Super Champ XD combo amp and really liked it except for the wimpy 10" speaker that came with it and the fact you couldn't change the timing on any of the effects presets. I traded it for Super Champ X2 HD head only and Fender addressed the timing issue with the addition of the Tap Tempo. I solved the speaker issue by using an Egnater Rebel 1X12 cabinet and a modfied Peavey cabinet with 2 Jensen C10Rs. I've only had this particular head for a couple of weeks, but from what I've seen, It's going to be a work horse. The clean tones from this amp are really very, very good and the modeled amps are very usable. Great for jazz, blues, rock.. extremely versatile. The effects aren't the best in the world by any stretch of the imagination, but they're not horrible either. I use a combination of pedals and Pro Tools plug-ins in the studio and can get pretty much whatever tone I need. For gigging, the head with a decent cabinet would be perfect for small lounges or a DI feed to the P.A. The only drawback is that switching from one amp model to another is completely manual (the footswitch only selects clean/modeled and efx on/off). The Fuse software is really impressive, although I've not had time to really get into it very deeply yet. From what I've played around with, it great enhances the flexibility of the amp and is reasonably easy to use. As a studio/recording amp, it is ideal and I highly recommend it.
