NEW REVIEW - Tons of Twang for the Buck
I've been in the market for a good Tele for some time, but didn't want to break the bank to get it. I nabbed one of these a month ago, and can't put the thing down. Guess, I found it all with this Special Edition (made only for Musician's Friend and Guitar Center) natural ash Telecaster. Some of these might have two- or three-piece bodies, but mine is one-piece ash with some of the best figuring in the grain I've ever seen on a slab of ash. I'm not usually a big fan of stock Fender pickups, with one exception -- I love Fender's Tex-Mex PUPS. As it happens, this guitar comes with them (confirmed with serial number info via email with Fender). Some guys might prefer the vintage bridge, but for me, the stock bridge on this is perfect and I prefer it. I've had good luck with Mexi-made Fenders in the past, but this one is over the top. I have an ancient Les Paul, so this guitar does not seem overly heavy to me. A simple remedy is to hang a heavy guitar from a 2 1/2 or 3-inch wide, soft-leather strap. It distributes the weight evenly and painlessly across the shoulder. I was especially surprised by the neck and fretboard. The fret tangs are smooth (no picky ends) and the fretboard edges even feel like they're "rolled" -- smooth, broken in feel. It doesn't have the skinniest neck made by Fender -- this one is just right, with a little meat but not too much. Very comfortable on the hands and fingers (I have small hands and short fingers, and can fly on this). There are no flaws or quality issues with this guitar at all. It's a ton of guitar for small change, and truly top-shelf quality. This review is based on 45 years professional playing experience. I had the chance to air it out at an open blues jam in Kansas City last weekend, it got lots of raves from other players there. If you want that Tele twang, this is a good way to go.

Good for the price
I got an ash FSR in Nov '07 and let's start with what's not listed: it actually has a tortiseshell pickguard (not white), it has a 3-piece body, and it doesn't come with a gig bag (unlike the other standard teles). That said, it weighs a ton but sounds quite good. With the mexis, there is more variation in quality than the americans, so check you neck-body gap and neck well, but all in all its a great guitar.
If looking for a vintage look you could easily throw on a fender vintage bridge, saddles, strap, and black pickguard and have a really nice fifties look. Highly recommended!

Beautiful Guitar
I was very pleased with the appearence right off the bat. Nice and solid and a beautiful finish. The neck is like butter. It is made in Mexico, but so what? It is a Fender... You can always change things here and there on this guitar but why do that? Keep it original in stock condition, that is why you bought it in the first place. It sounds great! But I will have to take it to my set up guy and have him do a proper adjustment to the strings and neck etc.... I will put Cleartone 9's on it to boot. I am getting myself a nice SKB66 case for this also. Yes, I will pay over $2000 for that American Tele sometime in the future in Blonde or Butterscotch............but right now, I love this guitar and it will be part of my collection.
You really should get this one.........

Excellent Guitar
This guitar is just great. When I went to the guitar shop, I wanted an American Telecaster. I played every one they had. Then, I decided to pick up this baby for comparison, just to see how much it "sucked" compared to the Americans, like I hear so much from people. Man was I blown away. I couldn't believe my ears: the tone was BETTER than the American. It had the deeper, more twangy sound that was exactly what I wanted, and it was even slightly louder. I'm a tone chaser, all I really care about is tone, so I bought it on the spot. That being said, the neck on this guitar isn't as smooth playing as an American. It's also not as much of a looker, though I think it looks awesome. The pickups are also a bit noisy. But I wouldn't think twice before making the same decision again, I'm VERY happy with my purchase. Plays well, sounds amazing, looks good, and cheap price. What's more to want?

Fender MIM Ash Tele
Don't let the MIM fool you, great guitar. The price is great and the quality and playability are Classic Fender. This guitar sounds great, the ash body gives it great tone and sustain. The neck feels like 'butter' and it is very easy on the hands. It is also a beautiful guitar to look at.
The only complaint I have is that the pickups are noisy. The tone of the pickups is Vintage Tele, but the hum is present too. But, with the money that's saved, it will be easy to upgrade to some SCN or Noiseless pickups in the future.

Good Intermediate Guitar
This guitar is awesome for any intermediate player. It's a bit heavy, but it plays perfectly! It stays in tune for a very long time, and the look of the Ash wood is beautiful. Definitely a great buy!

Great twang for the buck.
This is the kind of guitar you want to grow old with. Smooth, rich with tone, just the right amount of twang and plenty of control through the knobs. The ash gives you a sound that is more mellow than the standard in alder – sharper rather than jangly with just enough sustain.
The neck is very comfortable, allowing for fast, but controlled action. And with the right amp combination it will give you the bluesy, country tones and even drive some harder rock tones.
It only comes in the one finish, luckily it looks great. Save the flashy finishes for the flashier guitars I guess.
As far as what you can do with it, it does have some punch and snarl, but punk, metal and thrash don't really suit this guitar.
The build quality is awesome. Very solid. Much more so than the MIM Standards I played.
Now it does get some dings on account of it's Mexican manufacture. The fact is the finish isn't perfect and being polyester, it will never age with that patina of a classic guitar. But I dig the sound and considering the value for the dollar I think it's a great guitar.

Under Priced
I tried a couple of different floor models, and when I tried the Ash body I was hooked! It just had the sound I wanted. I agree it is on the heavy side, but the sound that comes out of this model is beyond compare. The neck is so smooth and easy to handle. After having my Mexican Blond for a couple weeks I parted with her for a few days to have a pro set her up, and man it was worth the wait. My set up guy praised the quality of the action and neck, he said it is as good as any MIA Tele. If you decide to buy one I recommend having it set up asap I can't put into words the difference it makes.

The Only Flaw
The only flaw to this guitar is it's weight. I compared with my Ibanez Gio-which I thought was heavy- and it was a bit heavier. It plays beautifully in acoustic tone on my Ibanez amp. I was going for the look of Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run guitar and this definitely floats my boat. Overall, great guitar.
