  • Good beginner guitar

As reviewed by Bryan on 2/26/2011

I'm a beginner as of now. Been playing since Christmas. My sister got this pack for 25 dollars from her patient. This is a great guitar in my opinion. Maybe not as good as a Ibanez. But still a wonderful guitar. I've learned many songs on this and gotten the use of the tremolo bar. I would recommend this to ANY guitar player.

  • beginners

As reviewed by Aidan Ellison on 7/7/2011

I got this guitar a long time ago and I can say it is a decently built guitar, i have dropped it a few times over the years, but it still works great. I like to play metal and surprisingly the pickups scream somewhat decently. It is not a sensitive touch play at all, I can not stress that enough. The Squire is not made for the metal genre of music but it is a great beginners guitar. I would reccomend it to a kid who wants to learn guitar because it is affordable and good for beginning techniques.

  • Good for starters, but quickly outgrown

As reviewed by FREDDIE S on 11/9/2011

First, let me say that this is a good, all-in-one, starter kit for beginners. It's a great setup for anyone that is uncertain whether or not they will continue to play and don't want to lay out a lot of hard-earned money to find out. I purchased one of these kits about a year ago and quickly outgrew it, upgrading pretty much everything the package came with. Could I have spent my money on other gear? Yes. Do I regret purchasing this guitar package? No. The Squier Strat itself is an okay guitar, considering how incredibly inexpensive it is. Quality is a little lacking in some places, but it's certainly playable. The neck pickup is quite muddy on mine. I suspect there's quite a bit of variability in the quality of these. If you can play one first (this is true of any guitar), do so. The action is pretty high and other than slapping a set of strings on it, it's clear that there is no thought really given to setup at the factory. That said, having a tech set it up or doing it yourself , is worth the time and effort. It's actually pretty playable now (excepting the neck pup), after new strings and setup. Don't expect this guitar to have any resale or trade-in value. I plan on keeping mine as a beater. I upgraded to something else later, but still pick this one up on occasion. Notes on the other items: 1) Strap included - pretty worthless actually. Uncomfortable and very cheap. I replaced this almost immediately. 2) Gig bag - Not half bad actually. Padding could be a little more dense, but it's surprisingly nice for a "throw-in" item. I still use it, but I wouldn't put my favorite axe in it and expect it to be adequately protected. 3) Amp - It's also okay as a starter practice amp, if portability is important to you. It sounds okay on clean, but as others have noted, pretty crummy on overdrive. I upgraded the amp shortly after buying this package also. 4) Chromatic tuner - Others have had problems with theirs, but mine has worked fine thus far. It's a cheapo tuner, but does what it's supposed to. I use it with my other guitars still, but I have 2 others I use more frequently. This one fits in my case, which is nice. 5) Fender Electric Guitar DVD: This is actually a nice throw-in item too, although very cursory in it's coverage. There are full length versions available separately as well. I think the video is more of a plug for Fender, but that's okay with me. In a nutshell, this is a great way to start playing electric guitar, the package includes everything you need to get started (even a few picks). With a little work, the guitar can be made better, but certainly has it's limitations. If you're in doubt about whether you'll continue playing, but want to give it a try, this isn't a bad way to begin. However, if you do continue to play seriously, you'll find yourself upgrading/replacing pretty much everything. In my case, I replace everything within 3 months, but as they say... Your mileage may vary.
