The Fender Pawn Shop Special Excelsior 13W 1x15 model is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive tube combo amps in Fender history. Its brown textured vinyl covering, smartly stylish “E” grille design and bold crossed-swords front-panel badge convey a decidedly stately vibe with a marked air of cold war cool. To say nothing of its admirable tone and power. The 13-watt Excelsior elegantly encloses a single 15” speaker, with a bottom-loaded primary chassis and top-loaded control chassis for operating convenience and low noise (powered by two 6V6 output tubes and two 12AX7 preamp tubes). Distinctive features include Instrument, Microphone and Accordion inputs that each have individually optimized circuitry; tremolo circuit with speed control, bright/dark tone switch (for treble or bass emphasis), volume control and 1/4” internal speaker disconnect that lets the amp drive an external speaker enclosure.   • Great amp...but

    I love this amp. Was exactly what I was looking for. Turned up to about 3 o'clock on the volume dial gave great tube breakup and mixed really well with the SuperChamp XD that I run in stereo with it. Incredible tone and just really nice kind of fuzzy distortion. But, on mine and the other one in my local GC store, on D notes-and not even all D notes, just some-with the volume up past halfway there was a more than just noticeable metallic rattle sound. I investigated best I could before taking it back (and talked with others on some online forums who experienced similar issues) and tracked it down to something inside the upper chasis. Not all of them have this from what I've read online, but the 2 I've played have and I'm really hoping the one that's being shipped to me doesn't, because I really like the tone and breakup of this amp. Plus it looks cool.

    This amp does exactly what you'd expect, and it does it well. It's not meant for certain types of music. Those that complain, obviously didn't do their homework. The only thing lacking is a reverb unit.

  • Looks good.

    Very good as an ornament: looks like something you'd see in a tobacco shop next to a Las Vegas blues club. But you would be sure to never find it IN the blues club. The amp's clean tone is thin and flat, and the poor cabinet construction causes flubbing at about volume 6, well before any serious tube breakup occurs. There is also widespread talk of numerous repair issues. Many things that look this good and cost this little seem too good to be true, but don't let that fool you: this one really isn't true.
