Availability:

Play the bass that carried Jaco's musical genius to the world.

The Fender Pastorius fretless electric bass preserves the memory of legendary Jaco Pastorius, a beacon for generations of aspiring bass players who bridged the gaps between R&B, rock, jazz, classical, and Caribbean musics. He changed the musical world of bass guitar with his uncanny gifts and visionary approach to the instrument. And he did it with one fundamental tool—a Fender Jazz Bass. Fender has re-created Jaco's well-played Jazz Fretless in painstaking detail, so you can enjoy a special connection with this great artist.

  • Best fretless on the market for the price

As reviewed by Luke on 5/9/2011

I bought this bass about a year ago (not from Guitar Center) and figured I've spent enough time with it to submit a review and try to help out anyone else who might be on the fence. First of all, I want to say that this is a WAY better choice than the Jaco Replica bass. I have played both and can say that the only real difference is the fact that the Replica is already beat up for you. This bass is shipped to you clean as a whistle and looking absolutely beautiful. My advice, start with a blank canvas like this bass and beat it up/break it in yourself. It'll save you the extra bucks you'd need to dish out for the Replica. Also, as far as appearance goes, I prefer the look of this one much more. The Jaco Replica has an ugly yellow center. I don't know where the Fender guys got that from. Jaco's bass didn't look like that. The look of this bass is awesome. P-bass knobs, vintage tuning keys/gears. The neck is absolutely beautiful. The only thing I wasn't too happy about is the fact that the Fender Jazz Bass print on the head of the neck is A STICKER. You can't tell from a distance, but when you get up close you can see the glare/edge of the sticker. I'm not sure why Fender did this. In the end though, it's probably the best fret-less bass on the market right now. Is the price a little much? Sure. Maybe buying used will help, especially if you want it to be slightly roughed up (because that's how Jaco's bass was). Be sure to get some Rotosound Swing 66 strings and keep the action fairly low (but not super low) to get that Jaco "growl". Also be sure to throw your neck pickup all the way down and you bridge pickup all the way up. If you want to sound like Jaco, this bass will get you pretty close!

  • Best Bass I have ever played!

As reviewed by Artutro PERALTA-RAMOS on 6/21/2012

Right out of the box, this is an amazing bass. The first thing you will notice is the beautiful 3 tone sunburst finish. Next you will notice the awesome vintage j bass stylings. These compliment the bass very well. Above all else my favorite part of this bass is the growling fretless tone. This bass is well worth the price and I would recommend it to any bass player looking for a new fretless.

  • jaco model

As reviewed by bassman1983 on 7/25/2006

this is a great bass. if you are a jaco fan, this is the bass you were looking for. my only problem is the color. jaco's real bass was a little brighter than this one. other than that, it comes with all the accessories (bridge and pickup covers). mine came with flatwound strings. switch to the rounds and you will have his sound.
