Great Deal, But Keep A Keen Eye

I had three FR48's to choose from at my local GC stores. Two were rejected. On one, the headstock inlay was off center. The other had a tuning gear that was crooked. The third guitar was perfect. The stock Fender tuning pegs had a lot of slop, so swapped them for Gotoh keystone styled gears, which required no re-drilling. Like most round neck resonators, the FR48 is set for finger playing, not slide. I mostly play slide, so I loosened the truss rod for higher action. A taller nut can make this guitar a great slider. I?ve played a Dobro made when the Dopyera Brothers were still in business (and they INVENTED the resonator guitar), and the FR48 sounded incredibly better. The FR48 had that mean blues growl. Put some semi-flat GHS #1600 strings on it, and you'll have a screamer. FYI: Proper Dobro tuning is (from the 6th string down to the 1st) D-B-G-D-B-G. It is NOT a standard open-G tuning. Check the guitar out thoroughly before you buy, and if you do, you?ll find a great treasure.

Great Bang for the bucks

I have owned this guitar for over a year now. It has great sound. I have played many of the other moderate priced resonators and they don't measure up to this one. The nut was a little high for me so I lowered it, put 16/18 guage strings on the E and B. Works great for fingerpickin' and slide. The chrome scratches easily and if you don't like fingerprints on the chrome, oh well! Overall, well worth the bucks but a National is still in the budget for next year.

Great guitar for the price

I always wanted a resonator. Nationals are a bit pricey ($2500+). Fender has created a very solid, great playing affordable version. It does weight a ton. I won't be playing it all night long but if does sound fantastic.I actually had a pick-up put in (Fishman)and this thing sounds great through my Fender Deluxe Reverb!

Fruit Punch on the real blues

I love it, it is the best guitar I have. Before I buy it, I was a litle concern about the weight, but, it is not so heavy, it is a Heavy metal blues. very original sound 50' 60'. Just love it!

Love the Resonator!

I put off buying it several times. Tony at Guitar Center in Las Vegas is a pro! We went over the unit and it sounded great. I can play it as a dobro or as a banjo . . . what a great value! Heavy? Yeah - I change on stage several times during a show anyway - more chrome than on my motorcycle. I tightened the tuning pegs and am thinking about adding a pick up. I play it mic'd through my Fender Accoustic amp and it REALLY IS SWEET! Wish I had done it a year ago. Thanks to Tony and the Guitar Center for making it happen!
