A fascinating variation on the tweed '57 Twin amp with a switchable power attenuator.

In a historic collaboration, Fender introduces its first artist signature amplifiers-EC Series amps bearing the name of legendary guitarist Eric Clapton.

Built to the exacting specifications of Clapton himself, the EC Twinolux is a fascinating variation on the tweed '57 Twin amp and Fender's answer to his call for a special model with several distinctive features. Handmade in the United States with '50s-era output tube bias tremolo (which produced a more throbbing pulse than later Fender tremolo circuits) and a switchable power attenuator (reduces speaker output and can disable one speaker for even lower output), it presents the pinnacle of personally inspired amp tone for stage and studio alike and is a must for Clapton fans and guitarists who want the ultimate in tube performance.

Features include hand-wired all-tube circuitry on eyelet board with premium components; circuit based on late-'50s Fender Twin amp model 5E8-A (about 40 watts); single channel with high-gain and low-gain inputs; tremolo with speed and intensity controls (can be selected with included footswitch); dual Special Design 12" Weber speakers (by Eminence) with alnico magnets for dynamic, sensitive response; two Groove Tubes 6L6GE output tubes, four 12AX7 preamp tubes and two 5U4 rectifier tubes; Mercury Magnetics custom transformers; finger-joined solid pine enclosure for warm, resonant tone; lacquered tweed covering with vintage-style brown/gold grille cloth and leather strap handle. Deluxe fitted cover included.

This is an ultra fine tweed amp with top shelf construction. Most importantly it has wonderful tone and is highly functional due to the power attenuator and other tonal controls. I play in a classic rock band, am 45 yrs of age. This amp is more versatile than the 57 Twin because it doesn't have a huge amount of midrange such as the 57 Twin. It has more of an open sound, but the bluesy tweed tones are definitely there. In first power attenuator position you have one speaker and low watts which allows for quick breakup. POSSIBLY similar to what a handwired Deluxe would sound like since it's at 18 watts. Position two is two speakers with more wattage, still very bluesy. The tonal nuances in all positions make this a wonderful tweed, loads of soul. Position three is around 40 watts with both speakers and you're ready to rock the club or play outdoors. Weber speakers, hand wired, and I haven't messed with the stock tubes. Our band plays Creedence Clearwater, Rolling Stones, the Band, the Pretenders, Bo Diddley, this amp is all I need. A great variation of the 57 Tweed and if you think of all the amps Clapton has used over the years, this is his final nod to what is the finest. This circuit, with dual tube rectifiers, tremelo and Weber speakers is all you need. I use a Fender Hot Rod limited tele with full size '59 humbucker in the neck position, '89 strat and a Les Paul with Antiquities through it. The Les Paul is a bit dark in close settings, but if you have distance in a large room or club to open up the amp, the Les Paul will sing too. The tones with single coils are very musical and soulful. I rarely use any effect with this amp, maybe delay or reverb in a live performance setting.
