This Fender Custom Shop slab-bodied Precision Bass re-creates an ultrarare version of the P Bass made especially for the U.K. market during 1966. "Slab body" refers to the sharper, more squared-off edge around the perimeter of the instrument that makes it more like a Telecaster or the earliest 1950's version of the P Bass than the 1966 production P Bass. Experts say that originally only 20-30 of these slab Precisions were made, yet a surprisingly large percentage of them made it into the hands of bassists in some of the most popular British bands of that era, most notably John Entwistle of The Who, along with Chip Hawkes of The Tremeloes, Ace Kefford with The Move and later, Steve Currie in T-Rex and Adam Clayton of U2.
Other unique features of the "Slab P" include the black pickguard and the rare maple cap neck (rosewood fingerboards were standard during the early-to-mid '60s). These uncommon basses earned a reputation for being really raunchy and gutsy with more of a growl than a regular Precision Bass, surely due to their special combination of slab body, maple cap neck, and split P Bass pickup. This Custom Shop re-creation is exceedingly rare like the original and features the best select tonewoods as well as superb craftsmanship and electronics.
