  • A great fusion of the Frontman and the Mustang amps

As reviewed by Mitch Wiedemann on 12/15/2013

The Champion 40 has some really nice sounds in a light-weight, classic black face amp style. It's what I've been waiting for. If you're like me, you want your amps to have great sound, you want them to look cool, and you don't want them to cost a lot. I really liked the idea of the old Fender Frontman amps. Simple blackface styling, light-weight, and inexpensive. The trouble with the Frontman series was with the un-controllable volume control taper, and the harsh drive channel. The Champion series has a very usable volume control taper, and several great amp models to give decent overdrive/distortion sounds. I really like some things about the Fender Mustang series too. I used mostly two of the many amp models -- '65 Deluxe and Super-Sonic. I didn't like the top-mounted controls on the Mustangs, or the fact that the knobs didn't always reflect the actual state of the control. I had no interest in the thousands of tweaks that could be made with the software. I like my amps simpler and better-looking than the Mustang series. Lo-and-behold, the Champion series has the best aspects of the Frontman series (styling and price) and the best sounds of the Mustang series. While I'm at it, I may as well answer the ubiquitous amp question: "Is this amp giggable?" The answer is, "it depends on the overall volume of your band" If you're playing coffee houses or house parties, then probably. If you're in a hard rock or metal band, then chances are your stage volumes are higher, and you'll want to get the Champion 100. If I were currently playing guitar in my band (I'm the drummer) I'd get the Champion 100.

  • Great Value/Rockin Amp

As reviewed by Darrell on 5/29/2014

I had been looking for a good practice Amp to use with my new Les Paul and this one fit the bill great. It is a very easy to use powerful amp that is light weight. I has more FX and voices than I have even figured out how to make the most of yet. I am using it in my home studio right now and it will rattle the walls. It has typical Fender quality for a reasonable price. The one thing I want to add is the optional footswitch that can be used to select Channel 1 (Clean with or with out FX) or Channel 2 (voices and overdrive with or with out FX). I have not tried to use it in a performance setting yet, but I feel sure it will be more than enough power for the small to medium indoor stuff that I do. If you are looking for a good amp at a reasonable price this is it. Can't beat a Fender.

  • Much more than anticipated

As reviewed by Michael Gore on 11/21/2013

I should probably read the spec sheet on things more thoroughly, because this little amp surprised me with the amount of settings it has. The Boss MG-80 practice amp I was using just quit working one day. It was a couple decades old, so I suppose those things happen. So needed a new practice amp and had recently acquired a Fender American Standard Stratocaster, so I wanted to get a Fender amp, just cause. This amp had a single 12" speaker, and I do like the sound of 12" speakers, and it wasn't under powered or over powered, and it seemed just right, so I bought it. The sound is fine (more than enough power for what I need) and the size is perfect for the area I have available. It has an jack for headphones/earbuds and an mp3 player, and lots of settings. If it had a output for another speaker it would be perfect. As is, this amp is a great value and it's a FENDER!!! So yeah, I'm loving it.
