Amazing guitar!
Feels great. Set up pretty well out of the box. I just had to lower the action a little.
The single coils sound really good and the greasebucket circuit does exactly what fender says it will.
The humbucker is a little weak in my opinion but is probably good for blues and jazz, just not rock.
I gave the American Special HSS a test drive and compared it head-to-head with the American Standard, American Deluxe and MIM Standard -- and left with the Special. It was a no brainer. The tone is phenomenal, from high gain to clean to crunch. If you like to dial in some gain, then this is your axe, because the Texas Specials are hot and break up nicely, while retaining that classic Strat sound. The Greasebucket tone pots are a great feature, and allow you to dial down the treble without adding muddiness. Even set to zero these pickups sing. And you can adjust the tone of bridge pickup! Set on 6, the bridge delivers sound reminiscent of a Gibson SG; even the neck pickup rounds off nicely. So you can easily deliver country twang, rock and blues with equal aplomb -- and nail those Gilmour, SRV, AC/DC and Led Zep licks perfectly. Pinch harmonics are good; the sustain is far superior to all of the other Strat models I tried; and it stays in tune. It was set up perfectly off the shelf, with no fret buzz, tight action and a straight, silky-smooth neck. The jumbo frets are fast and allow seemingly effortless string bends. And the best part: the price is ludicrous! The only downsides: the tremolo is so-so (I don't use it, anyway) and the gig bag is a joke. Buy a hard-shell case. There's a very accurate review from Guitarist Magazine (U.K.) that I suggest you read if you're considering this guitar. I highly recommend the American Special HSS. Give it a try before you buy something that costs hundreds more. Thanks, Fender, for making this one!
Fantastic neck. Mine has the ease of bending of a gibson. Plus I can switch to the humbucker for a different type of lead. I love it. Finish is great. Price is great. Our GC in Birmingham has great people. I am thrilled with the guitar, buttery neck and all.
