  • Disaster waiting to happen

As reviewed by Milton on 6/11/2014

After waiting years to purchase a mid-high end range bass guitar, I came to settle on the Natural Finish Fender American Deluxe V. After playing it for hours at Guitar Center, I noticed there was a slight noise come from the Preamp. I didn't think anything of it at the time because I figured it was coming maybe the amp or the power in the room itself. The first time I played it at a gig, I definitely noticed a noise coming from the bass. It seemed to be coming from the treble knob on the bass guitar. To analyze this, I plugged in the bass to an audio interface and inserted a frequency analyzer. Right away I was able to see that the bass was producing significant noise between 8k and 12k. This was without me playing anything, just having the volume knob on. Following this outing, I played another gig and as soon as I plugged the bass into the PA there was an over powering hum/buzz. At this point the only solution was to switch it to passive mode and turn the tone volume all the way off. I was able to get through the gig, but with a big sacrifice in tone. The next day, I returned the bass and exchanged it for the same model, but a different bass. Same problems. I could hear the buzz through the amp and so I decided to try the rosewood version. Again, noise and buzz. It seems like this is an inherent problem with these basses. I decided to take home a different instrument of the same model and took it straight to a guitar shop and have them look at it. After inspection, they determined that no amount of shielding would help the sound. All the electronics are as they should be and that any noise with the instrument is a side effect of the design of the pickups/electronics combination. I called Fender and they said they have heard of this problem with these basses. They're research and development team at this time knows there is a problem, but has no answer to it. Apparently it has to do with the new N3 Noisless pickups. They somehow attract nose and depending on the environment can yield terrible results. I returned the bass the next day. This bass sounds incredible and has a great feel when playing it. However it is a disaster waiting to happen and seems to provide more headaches then enjoyment whilst playing. I would recommend getting an American Standard V or getting a 2010 or earlier model of the American Deluxe Jazz.
