  • Great combo for the money

As reviewed by Dan Graves on 11/29/2011

I ordered this combo pac as a gift for my grandson, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I've been playing it for the last few days since it arrived, since I don't have to give it up until Christmas. As with any new guitar, some fine tuning was required initially. After about an hour changing out the strings, adjusting the neck relief, string intonation and string height with the hex key wrenches included with the kit, it was ready to go. The neck plays well, with no high frets or string rattle. As a point of reference, I have been playing and repairing guitars for about 40 years now, and own a ES335 Gibson, and several Gibson and Martin acoustics. This little "Strat" plays better by comparison than any two hundred dollar guitar has a right to. It holds a tune pretty well, unless you use the whammy bar, which knocks it right out of tune. I took the bar off after a few minutes. As far as the Fender Frontman 15 goes, I have not encountered any of the issues that some of the other reviewers have reported. The clean sound is perfectly clear, with no hiss. The controls knobs all work as they should, and the gain control allows the distortion to be easily dialed in when drive setting is selected. For the money, it would be very hard to improve on this combo.

  • Decent Guitar for Beginners

As reviewed by Hobby Player 1.5 Years on 6/20/2011

About 3 years ago, I picked up this Guitar from my local Guitar Center to start playing. Even though I didn't actually start playing it until 2 years ago, it's a great guitar. If you don't feel like reading through everything, I'll give you the bottom line at the very end. It has 21 frets, which isn't bad for a beginner, but if you're going to get more technical later on, you're going to want maybe 24 frets. When people complain about the humming sound, stop. It's all Stratocasters, not this one specifically. I also suggest replacing the stock strings with Ernie Ball regulars. They're much better. Now I'll get on the rest of the equipment. This has been the only amplifier that I have ever had, and I love it. It's decent for chilling in your bedroom and playing with friends. It's not too large or too powerful, it's just right. Plus, there is a distortion effect on it that you can activate at the click of a button. If you ask me, those headphones are useless. I've tried using them with the amplifier many times, but they do not work. They're better off being used for your iPod. Great quality Headphones though. The strap is too flimsy. It's almost like a Guitar Hero strap. The guitar used to fall right out from me. I suggest getting a better one. The tuner is great when you want to tune to Standard and Drop D. Nothing else. When you want to play a wider variety of songs, get a chromatic tuner or an effects pedal that has a tuner in it. The case is decent but it's no gig bag.... get a gig bag. Finally, the instruction video is completely useless until you have a good start on guitar playing. Get lessons, buy a scale book or something. Just don't rely on it for a great start on guitar playing. It's something to look into maybe after your first month. BOTTOM LINE: Decent Guitar and Amplifier for a great price. Strap, Jack Cables, a tuner, and a different Gig Bag should be bought separately. DO NOT GET THIS GUITAR IF YOU ARE A LEFTY.
