For someone with limited space and limited finances, this is a great drum to start with. It's got a great sound and is small, lightweight and portable. The highest notes don't sound as good as they probably could, and you do have to hit them harder to get the note out. Apparently that's normal for steel drums, though - the higher the note, the more pressure needed. The higher notes kind of echo through the rest of the drum, so while the note does come out, it's not as clear as the rest of the notes. Overall, it's a great drum, sounds really nice, and is fun to play! I'd definitely recommend it for those looking for a nice beginner or just-for-fun steel drum, as the full sized ones are pretty expensive. To adjust the height of the stand, just buy longer pieces of PVC pipe and cut to size.
Here's how I overcome the "dead" middle keys. They're not "dead", just need a little more force. I get two smallish superballs from the local party store and jam them on some pointed wooden shish-ke-bab skewers (slim, pointed, wood, 12" works about right). Stick the balls on perpendicular to the "seam" so they don't split apart. Volume improved 4X, and the "clunk" of the supplied sticks agains the sides is minimized.
The number of notes is so limited that even a beginner can't find much enjoyment. Outside notes sound fine. Inside notes are dead.
Review the music you want to play before buying anything. That will tell you what product(s) you will need.
I got this for my boyfriend for christmas. It is amazing sounds great! If you are in the market for one of these I recommend this one %100, awesome, genuine hand made instrument!
This was a gift for my 14 year old son who already plays the drums. He loves it and we love to hear it. Everytime he plays it, it sounds like we are in Jamaica or the Carribean somewhere. Very good sound and he liked that it was marked w/notes. I researched for a while on buying a steel drum and this was by far the better purchase for the money. The stand is made from pvc and is only table top height. My husband very easily added longer piping and now he can use at his regular drum set.
I bought this to add some relaxing island sound for our band, and it works great for that. My only gripe is that the smaller notes in the middle require much more force than the outer ring notes to play. You'll probably want to make a higher stand for this, but PVC is cheap enough. I was amazed how loud and good this sounded. It's durable enough that I let my 2-year old bang away on it and he loves it. I recommend it!
