Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass (106086358)
Availability:

Updated electronics, vintage bridge, and a rugged alder body enhance one of the best Fender Jazz basses yet.

The Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass delivers the modern features that bassists demand in a sleek, familiar electric bass. An updated preamp circuit puts out deeply exhilarating active and passive tone. Powerful-yet-quiet N3 Noiseless pickups present more clean headroom, extended EQ range, and plenty of sublime tonal options, thanks to the active/passive toggle switch and passive tone control. The classic Fender Jazz Bass block fretboard inlays and binding give the Deluxe Jazz Bass extra touches of class.

The Fender American Deluxe J-bass is built with an alder body—a hard wood that provides clear tone and lasting sustain. The maple neck with modern C-shape, Posiflex graphite neck support rods, 5-bolt neck plate, and contoured heel make the instrument extremely easy to play. The High-Mass Vintage bass bridge offers compressed and focused bass tone, with more mid range punch. It retains the Fender articulation and sparkle, combined with vintage-style saddles to maintain a classic vibe. The combination of a steel plate with brass saddles produces the best possible Fender Bass sound.

Pairing up these pickups with the Deluxe Jazz Bass' EQ and volume controls provides that notorious Fender Jazz bass sound that has mystified some of the world's most prominent bassists for decades.

Other Fender features include Stealth "A" string retainer, tinted neck, rolled fingerboard edges, highly detailed nut- and fretwork, genuine bone nut, flat-head screws on battery compartment (for easy changes with a coin or pick), gloss polyurethane neck finish, and a gloss urethane body finish to dress this bass in ultimate style and beauty.

  • The 2010 Fender American Deluxe J-Basses

As reviewed by Paxson Helgesen on 5/11/2010

From my experience of playing, and i've played a lot of basses from Fender, Gibson, Ernieball Musicman's, etc., the updated 2010 line is incredibly impressive. Aesthetically, the bass is beautiful. The block inlays are very retro, the binding on the neck has an added touch of class, and the attention to detail in every aspect of the instrument is impressive. The sound from the N3 is a tad hotter than the Samarium Cobalt Noiseless, but still retains the incredibly low noisefloor. With the addition of the S1 switch, the transition to passive after a dead battery is much less detectable compared to other instruments. You're getting every penny's worth for this instrument.

This bass has great looks along side some great sound. I personally like the black on black because it really makes the chrome accents pop. I would prefer having a pickup guard just for more of a classy and retro look. If you love fiddling with the tone this bass has plenty of knobs to feed your need. Personally, I don't need that much tonal control but that doesn't stop me from using them. The fret board has a very nice feel in your hands and it is all very nicely balanced. If you are looking to improve your arsenal of basses, this baby is it. It's also an american deluxe so you know that it will be in excellent condition right out of the box. I highly recommend this bass.

As reviewed by TRACY WILKINSON on 1/31/2013

I've been playing bass for 30 years and all jazz basses the last 10. I was looking at several boutique instruments both new and used, as well as considering a custom-built bass. I found the features of the USA Deluxe Jazz to be what I was looking for at about half what I was prepared to spend. Kenny Bates (manager at the Lynnwood WA GC) was so helpful and pro on the phone that I ordered it from him right then, sight unseen. The bass arrived as promised and had great sound out of the box. I handed it over to Mike Lull the next day to be properly set up and PLEK'd. The tone out of the stock N3 pu's is awesome, and the pre is nice and punchy with tight lows and nice popping highs. The active-passive switch with passive tone control is a nice upgrade as well. I had a club date that night and received many compliments on the fantastic tone and great looks (Olympic white, rw neck w blocks). The neck is fast, comfortable and easy to play. All told, I'm very pleased with my purchase and customer service from Guitar Center. Now, the cons- A few frets had to be re-glued as they came from the factory loose. Not a major issue with me, since it would be going to a luthier before I actually played it anyway, but still.. The new stock Fender bridge I'm still unsure of. I'm listing it in this section, although it is an improvement over the box-full of bridges I've discarded in favor of Hipshot or Bad Ass bridges. It will stay on the bass for now however. I'm not a big fan of the new neck PU routing. The rout extends to the control cavity as one continuous hole, you have to have a pick-guard on it all the time and I like the option of keeping it off. This of course is a purely personal perversion and in no way affects the instrument. Also the lining of the case sheds. Like a German Shepherd. Be prepared to use another case or be constantly wiping hair off it before you play. In short, I got what I was looking for; a quality, great sounding and very versatile bass and for the price, a fantastic value. The fact that I'm keeping it totally stock is a testament to how good this bass really is. Fender got it right.
