Yeah, a review on a drum key. If you can beleive it, this tool is very useful. Although it does not replace using your ears and tuning your drums (dont think you can get settings from someone and use them for your drums), they do help once you have already found your ideal sound. Tune your drums to your liking, check what settings the dial is at, write them down. Next time you change heads/tune up, get your settings out. Great for gigging drummmers that might need to tune up quickly.

I?ve got one of these and I have used it on a number of different shells. Problem with these mini torque keys (all of them, in my opinion) is that they simply cannot account for any of your drum's rod/lug combinations that bind even a tiny bit. Of course the older a shell is, the more likely it is that one or more rods/lugs on it will put up some extra resistance. The same problem exists when you torque down head bolts on automobiles ? if you don?t thoroughly clean the threads and remove oil and any crud from the bolt hole, you won?t get accurate, consistent torque. With drums, you are working within much smaller hardware venues. And yes, you can clean each lug?s swivel nut threads, and clean the tensions rod, and grease them. But there will still exist slight inconsistencies and stresses that make one or more rods not respond identically to one of these torque keys. That truth makes this tool something you may well find yourself tossing into that small box of extra drum odds and ends and parts, rarely again to think about.

Good for certain drums

By

from Grand Prairie, TX

Comments about Evans Torque Drum Key:

This is a very great device. But i think it probably works best on NEW drumkits. The way it works is that it measures the tension of each lugs until they're in tune, but some older drumkits might have a rust problem that holds back some of the tension on the lugs, making it think you HAVE tuned it perfectly, but its not. This happened with my drumset. So if you have a good ear then I think you could consider it :)

Updated review.

By

from OKC, OK

Comments about Evans Torque Drum Key:

Note previous review: OK, actually, I did recently purchase a small torque 1/4" drive wrench. It's not the most sensitive torque wrench, yet it works pretty well. Really, I do need the special 4-point socket for lugs (vs. traditional 6-point), which I'm obtaining very soon. Certainly, it's preferable and safer to use an extension for the socket. Maybe something is wrong with my Evans unit (perhaps it's, at times, too sensitive to torque?)--nonetheless, agreeing with another guy here--I do consider Evans really talented in head making and design. I garner that he had similar experience with the Evans tool. Anyway, with patience and care in using my true torque wrench--carefully and gradually turning each lug (instead of turning each lug individually until "clicking" to desired tension)--following the usual order and manner of tuning--is faster and provides more accurate/even tension than this tool--at least in my experience. Naturally, a true mechanic's torque wrench is somewhat heavy and requires patience and care working on lugs and around drums--familiar drum hardware offers similar hazards, though. To condense and get to the point: I find that the "real" tool, given a reasonable length socket extension and the appropriate specialized socket, is much faster, less frustrating, and far more accurate. If the Evans tool works well for you, though, it's easier, more convenient, far lighter, and thus safer to use. Given that many here will proceed towards clicking "Checkout" for this--both here and at their local GC stores, I hope that they find better success with it. Maybe it's luck--apparently, most purchasers experience a better outcome....

Great concept and time saver

By

from Navarre, FL

Comments about Evans Torque Drum Key:

This torque key is such a great idea. It works similar to a professional torque wrench that mechanics use on cars due to it's break away feature. It's break away feature is really neat but you need to take your time tightening your heads evenly because you can continue to tighten your head even after the torque key has broken away. This will add to your tuning time and you'll have to do more tuning by ear. It's a huge time saver for tuning drum heads when you're replacing heads. It's not 100% accurate but it'll tune your head really close to where you want. Another plus is that it's produced by a trustworthy brand name so you'll pay a little more for this in comparison to a similar, cheap $10 torque key but it's a better quality key.

FAST, ACCURATE TOOL

By

from Yucaipa, CA

Comments about Evans Torque Drum Key:

After a couple of uses, this thing is pretty sweet. For fast head changes, can't be beat. It takes minutes to create a reference setting, dismount, mount new head and torque to original reference. I'm totally happy with the functionality, quality and price of this essential tool. Manufactured quality appears to be top notch. We'll see how it holds up after a few changes !!

Perfect for Quick Gig Set-ups!

By

from Windsor, Ontario

Comments about Evans Torque Drum Key:

BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! Perfect for the beginner & profession alike! I got one of these for my boyfriend who is a professional drummer & drum teacher. He often times has shows to play with his band & since they are the head line act they go on stage last, there is very little tear-down & set-up time between each of the groups playing so it has to be quick. So we set up his drums he grabs his key & then sets it to the number he predetermined prior to the show & is able to have the drums sounding great and in tune in no time! (This also eliminates the need for him to strain to hear & stress over the drums sounding good!) I would tell anyone to buy this product, be they novice or professional, it has many benefits to it & is good heavy duty quality that lasts! (With novice drummers he is able to tell a student which number to place the key to for each drum allowing the child/adult to play on an in-tune set. For the pro its just a quick & easy way to make sure each lug is set at the exact same tension/torque [as long as you follow the correct tightening pattern]) The only problem being is he likes it so much he keeps getting more and more so he has one every where, one in each bag and one at each drum set! BUY THIS PRODUCT!!

Much better options out there than this!

By

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Evans Torque Drum Key:

This is not a very reliable tool. Every time you tighten a lug and it clicks, by the time you get to the last of them, the dial setting has changed! Its just a very cheaply made, unreliable product. Now it's just another drum key, that i paid too much for! Spend the extra $$ to get a drum dial!

Comments about Evans Torque Drum Key:

I couldn't ever get the tune on my toms to sound right untill i bought this. I was looking around on the internet earlier today and when i saw this i ran out and bought it right away and it made tuning my toms super easy. It only took 20 minutes and they sound better than they ever have. This is great for anyone who needs a better tune on their drums.
