I have a Sound Percussion drum set which of course is not a top of the line drum set. It is actually a low class with terrible stock heads. I upgraded to these heads and it completely changed my outlook on my set. It pretty much showed that you dont have to buy an expensive set to have great sound, you just need the right heads and these are them

I'm obviously in the minority here. I like Evans heads. The G12s sound good on the toms for all-around playing (soft to loud), and the EC2 clears are similar to Remo Pinstripes, but a little less harsh, and in my opinion best for really loud or really soft playing, but have a strange "slap" at moderate volumes. I tried the Onyx on a 14" tom - no joy. It did muffle the overtones a bit, but to get it to sound like anything other than a box required tuning it much higher than is required for the ECS's or the G12's. Apparently a lot of people like these, but I'm not one of them. I wanted to like them because they look cool, but I finally had to take the thing off the drum after I just couldn't stand the sound of it any more.

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

When it came time to replace stock heads on my Pearl " Soundcheck " Toms, the 12 inch Mounted Tom was matched with an Evans EC Resonate clear head with the broken dampening circle. I want another Onyx head for a different Tom. First of all the over volume of the Tom increased as did the texture of the sound. It's 13 inch counter part plywood drum has the Evans Coated 2 ply ( white ) and I have a serious interest in increasing the number of Onyx to other Toms. It's a better batter head. The over all performance of the this Mahogany drum is great. I now question what is better about other brand Toms and other Pearl Models. Get the Onyx and see the difference. It's a whole new meaning to " Black Power."

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

i have these heads on my Yamaha Stage Custom Birch, and wow do they sound terrific. i barely have to tweak with them and everyone who hears or plays my kit says its the best sounding kit they've heard, these drum heads sound exactly like an Evans G2 with 2 pieces of moongel, however they dont kill the tone, only overtones and resonance. For that kit, these are the only heads i will buy as they are dry and crisp and have great stick definition and last a long while. Plus they look superb ;]

              BIG orchestral/doom sound

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

Lacking a sharp attack, hence only 4 of 5 stars, these nonetheless make your toms sound twice as thunderous (my 10" tom sounds like an 18" now) but without added volume. They're actually a little quieter on average than the stock Remo heads on my maple Pearl toms. But the soft-to-loud dynamics are improved with these so you can get loud if you want, but not when you don't want (as with a ballad).

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

Due to my unique drum set this head fit sloppy and loose. The only head that I found that could work is the Evans EMAD. The rim surrounding the drum head is thicker than this head. There was no recommendation as to what brand of drum heads would be best when the set was purchased.

I love the way these heads warm up my toms. Very little sustain with just the right amount of punch.
