I have a Sound Percussion drum set which of course is not a top of the line drum set. It is actually a low class with terrible stock heads. I upgraded to these heads and it completely changed my outlook on my set. It pretty much showed that you dont have to buy an expensive set to have great sound, you just need the right heads and these are them

I believe Evans was trying to compete with Remo's Black Suedes, but these don't even stack up. These fall out of tune easy and don't have a very satisfying tone. I've had every brand of head on my set and Evans always seems to dissapoint. I think it might be the crimp ring's flexibility.

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

I love the way these heads warm up my toms. Very little sustain with just the right amount of punch.

Nothing short of the being the best choice

By Matt Fontana

from Johnstown, PA

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

I put a 12" size on my Yamaha 5x12 snare matched with a Hazy 300 and was very satisfied with the sound that was produced. When I got a 5.5x13 Yamaha snare I knew that only the best, in my opinion, would do. I get a full bodied sound with this head and the Hazy 300 just like with the 5x12. Hopefully soon, I'll be able to get a Yamaha kit!

14" Onyx Snare Head

By Jason Eilers

from Dry Ridge, KY

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

I got my snare head at the Guitar Center in Florence, KY for $14.99 and the price says it all. I got this black evans head and put tape on the bottom of the snare, it sounds like heaven. If you tune it right it sounds like the snare from RED: With help from my father my snare sounds great for my band and I have a talent show this Friday and I hope I win 1st!!!

Intense Heads

By Steven Hudson

from Hot Springs, AR

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

I purchased these heads to replace remo pinstripe two ply heads on a Tama Mahogany set & I can't express how pleased I am with my choice. For a long time now I've been a remo patron but after hearing these evans heads I'm hooked. They have great attack, ring out with warm tones & sound great when recording. When used with evans ec2 reso heads I'm convinced you cannot beat the sound. Each tone between toms is pronounced & well defined. Of course their flat black coating makes my set stand out.

Warm, dark, punchy, and deep

By Conner Lathem

from Fort Worth, Texas

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

The stock heads that came on my drum set were terrible, so I did tons of research and decided to buy a set of Evans ONYX heads. I went to my local Guitar Center, but they didn't have the 14" heads in stock, so the department manager ordered what I needed and had it shipped to my house. He also noted that he likes Remo ebony Pinstripes better, but I'd already thought about getting those, and had decided that the Evans heads seemed more like what I was looking for. Time passed, and finally the heads showed up at my door step. I removed the old, ruined stock heads from my set, and put the new ones on. I tuned them up to the same tension as my old heads, and tried them out. It sounded so bad I can't even describe it . . . It was so dull and lifeless. So I started cranking the heads up to a higher tension. I checked all the tension rods to make sure the head was in tune with itself, and then I hit the drums a few times. All of the sudden, they sounded much nicer. So I recorded myself playing a few fills. On the playback, I was amazed by how deep these heads sounded. I didn't even have the EQ on! So went back to my set and fine-tuned the heads until I had them sounding exactly the way I wanted. I recorded some more fills, and when I heard the playback, I was blown away. What a fantastic sound! Warm, dark, punchy, and deep. That is how I can describe it. I never thought a cheap drum kit could have a sound so close to that of an expensive set! It's definitely not the perfect sound, but it does sound really, really good. And I can only blame my drums for any lack of sound quality. If these heads were on a high-end drum set . . . I can't even imagine what that would sound like. My drums still have a bit of ring, but that's all coming from my stock resonant heads. I'll be upgrading to some Evans resos very soon! All in all, this is a great drum head. It doesn't suit all styles of music, and the sound may take a tiny bit of getting used to, but if you want dark punchy heads, these are for you.

nice

By chase stumpf

from norwalk,CT

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

I play with a pearl forum (wine red shell/black hard ware) and the heads look great. The tone is great also. I suggest remo rings...or dampeners for them to take away the unwanted ring when your jamming out the the studio. I love the way they sound and look they match my personality and I hope when I tell you to buy these heads you get them because they are better than any I have ever played on.

Durable w/ great tone, who woulda thought!!??

By Anthony Dominic

from Indianapolis., IN

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

I'm the hardest hitter in the business. No exaggeration. Tommy Lee got nothin on me. I've used every head under the sun. My favorite heads were Remo coated Ambassadors and coated Emperor. The best sounding heads...for one song... I would literally blow through these heads in one show or recording session. i had been looking for a head that gave the singing tone of these heads, but were a little more durable...and These Onyx heads deliver!!! Not quite as resonant as the emperor, but DEFINITELY more durable with not too much of a sacrifice! Plus, these really cosmetically trick out your kit! A must buy for hard hitters that require durability but don't want to sacrifice tone.

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drum Head:

I recently replaced my Remo Emperor heads with these. Wow! They made my drums come alive. They have a very nice tone and I love the texture as well. They almost feel like fabric and they are also easy to tune. They have an awesome appearance to boot! Can't say enough good things about these heads!
