The Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead offers an edge control ring mounted under 2 plies of 7-mil film. The EC2 drumhead controls vibration instead of eliminating it. It also dampens higher overtones, enhances low-end attack, and supports a broader tuning range.

Evans EC2 Sound Shaping Technology (SST)

Evans improved EC2 drumheads contain Evans' exclusive Sound Shaping Technology (SST). Sound Shaping Technology allows the drumheads to be fully optimized for each individual size by varying the thickness and density of the damping material, ensuring greatly improved performance and tone across the entire kit. Unlike other heads that lack SST, Evans EC2s contain the ability to balance attack and tone for each size. The result is a drumhead series fine-tuned for attack, tone, length of sustain, and ease of tuning. Packed with a more balanced and pre-EQ'd sound across the full kit, the vans EC2 with SST will make your toms sound better than you ever thought possible.

Here is what the pros are saying:

"So I just gave the new EC2s a test run overseas. They sound great!! I used them on a Mapex Orion kit. The new muffling rings are nice! After pounding these for a few shows they stayed focused."
-Chris Pennie

"The new EC2s are so incredible! The attack and tone has somehow been magnified, when I'm playing these heads the feel, definition and tone that I'm able to draw out of them is amazing and is so sweet to the ear."
-Camille Grainer

"The new Evans EC2 SSTs are amazing. My toms sound so warm and lush. These drum heads bring out the true sound of the drums."
-Dean Butterworth

"The best just got better - the new EC2 SST drumheads are incredible!"
-Preston Heyman - The Wolfmen and U.K. Session Supremo

its true... i fell in love with these heads the first time i gave em a hit. I've always been partial to aquarian heads. something about the really deep tones have always appealed to me as a metal drummer. but for some reason ive always had trouble getting the deep tones to cut through the rest of the band. i literally solved that problem when i bought these evans heads. deep, perfect overtones, awesome tuning derability, and loud. I play a birch, Tama Starclassic... and i fell in love with my kit again once i put these heads on. Phenomonal product by evans. i dont see myself going away from these heads any time soon.

I usually buy Evans drumheads, most notably their coated reverse dot batter head and Evans 300 snare side heads which have been great. I bought the EC2 SST for my acrylic snare, knowing that acrylic snares usually sound bright so I wanted a double ply head to tone down the brightness and give it more depth. I also wanted a clear head because I think they look the best with an acrylic shell. Unfortunately, this drumhead didn't work at all for it. I then used it on my Pearl Vision 14" floor tom and again, it was also disappointing. The stock double ply heads that came with the drums, to me, sounded better and I was surprised about that. There's a flappy, thin sound that I'm getting with this drumhead. I've tried various tension-tunings with it and muffling and it's just ok. During a sound check, the guitar player in the band went back on the drums so I could hear out front and compared to the ride toms, it lacked tone and didn't sustain as well compared to the stock heads. If it can't sound better than stock heads, something is wrong! This is not an inexpensive drumhead so it's even more aggravating when it fails to deliver. I will stay with proven winners from Evans that I know will work for me time and time again. This drumhead looks great but sorry Evans, this EC2 gets a reluctant thumbs down from me. This was supposed to be new and improved. It's new, but I'm not sure about being improved. Just my opinion, I'm sure many drummers may like this drumhead, it just didn't work out well for me.

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

As what most drummer say "you have to test it to believe it". I have 3 acoustic drum set and tried Remos and other Evans tom head on my mahogany and maple toms. The best sound I heard came from this EC2 SST. These are my words to descrbe this head "fat, warm, easy to tune, strike-driven sound, respond very well to your tuning/sound you like". I only have to use my drum dial once to even out all the tensions, and let my ear and hand-tunng adjust to my preference.

Deep Cut!

By

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

These heads deliver. Do you like attack with moderate sustain, void of annoying overtones? Then step right up to the EC2. I've spent many hours experimenting with different tunings and found what works for my taste... I leave the batter fairly low(10"@A) I use the EC1 for reso and tune about a perfect fourth higher(D). Same with 12". The 14" floor is much closer: within a half step. Play and enjoy!

Much Better!!!

By

from Rocklin, CA

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

I just bought the 10 and 12 sizes for my tom toms to replace the single ply stock heads that came with the drum set that I bought in November. The old heads would only take an hour to be beaten out of tune and I was beginning to worry that it was the drums fault. Luckily these heads fixed everything. They definitely amplify the low end as described. They also seem to work fine with my stock reso heads, but that might be because I have nothing to compare them to. For reference I have a PDP Z5 5 piece drum set.

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

These heads are great. These heads on the batter side and the evans ec resonant heads combined on each drum are amazing. Once you play these you wont go back. It gives a deep and focused sound. Very good deal.

Pretty Good

By

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

They tuned OK for me. Took a day or two to seat properly. I find the stick contact sound to be a little "plasticky" which may seem obvious, but I didn't like it. However, this will probably give them a sonic edge for cutting through the mix when I play with a band. Nice round tone overall.

Plastic Paper anyone?

By

from Atlanta, Georgia

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

I've had these on my Noble & Cooley studio kit for about a month. I'm having a hard time getting the sound I would like to get. I fine tune by hand after using a tension tuner to even out the head. I have tuned the heads many times, I'm just never satisified. One thing different from the other reviews, my 16" tom seems to have turned out the best for me. I think I need better resonant heads. Maybe this will help?

Bring back the metal rings

By

from St. Louis, MO

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

I've been playing the EC2 metal ring heads for over a year. They were very good! Just bought the new SST heads, and they are miserable. I can't tune them loose like the old ones, by the time I get the wrinkles out of the top head, my toms sound like timbales. Might be the last set of EVANS I ever buy, and that's all Ive bought in the last 10 years...Seriously bummed.

Pretty Good

By

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

These heads when i first got them i thought they were all hype, but when i got the tuned they sound amazing! However after a few months the ring starts to chip off and the heads lose their tone. So its a 4 because for the time they lasted they were great but after i had to switch to pinstripes for a quick fix.

16" Thunder

By

from Lexington, KY

Comments about Evans EC2 SST Clear Batter Drumhead:

I just swapped out the stock Made in Chinese British heads on my 16" floor tom with this and a clear G1 reso. The amount of change is just inexplicable. This being my first acoustic set, I was initially dissatisfied with the tuning range of my 16 and was considering an 18. Not anymore. The tuning range of this head allows me to get the thunderous low end I was hoping for without killing the high and mid cut. I don't quite have the perfect tuning of them yet, just got them a bit tighter than resonance. However, the overtone control is everything advertised. Dampens without eliminating the necessary frequencies. I'm excited to try the 12 and 14 soon. For reference, kit is a ddrum Dominion Ash Pocket.
